Join the Carmelite Sisters for a unique experience that will combine the depth of Carmelite Spirituality with the joy of volunteering. We will take on special projects at the Sisters' apostolates of health care, retreat work and education while seeking to bring the light and joy of Christ to all those we meet. The evenings will be filled with opportunities to grow spiritually, deepen friendships and get to know the Sisters. Special outings (to the beach and mountains) and a Day of Prayer are also scheduled. TYPE OF PLACEMENT: Volunteers will work alongside the Carmelite Sisters while completing several special projects at the Sisters' apostolates of health care, retreat work and education. AREA OF SERVICE: Based in Duarte, CA but serving in several cities in the greater Los Angeles area. LENGTH OF SERVICE: Short Term: 2 weeks: May 26-June 9 REQUIREMENTS: Single women ages 20-30; sound physical health is required; willingness to participate in times of community prayer, discussion and recreation; a spirit of faith, a sense of humor and a willingness to sacrifice. FINANCIAL ARRANGEMENTS: Room and Board are provided. LIVING ARRANGEMENTS: Volunteers and sisters will live in community at one of the Sisters' facilities. Individual rooms are provided; common rooms and kitchen are shared. A chapel is available onsite. Transportation to and from volunteer sites will be provided. SIZE OF PROGRAM: 10-12 participants TRAINING: One day orientation will be provided. Several classes on Carmelite spirituality and other related topics will be offered in the evenings. CATHOLICVOLUNTEERNETWORK .ORG | RESPONSE 2019 GOAL OF PROGRAM: To provide a peaceful, loving community for developmentally disabled adults where people's self worth can come Public Charter Schools, a “no excuses” public charter school network and El Camino Faith Formation Program to serve disadvantaged children in the South Bronx who do not have the means to attend a Catholic school. Fellows participate in an intensive service experience encompassing three programmatic pillars: faith, community, and education. In this way, fellows, who are young, passionate, college- educated adults, have the unique opportunity to be at the forefront of this groundbreaking project to serve some of our nation’s poorest students in an unprecedented way, sharing their own gifts and talents as they teach their students' hands, hearts, and minds. Seton Teaching Fellows are committed to service, professional development, and a simple lifestyle in a supportive, spiritually-nourishing community. Together, the fellows impact the academic and faith development of underserved children in the Mott Haven neighborhood of the South Bronx, New York, the poorest congressional district in America. TYPE OF PLACEMENT: Fellows start their day one of the Brilla Public Charter Schools—a charter school network recently featured in the NY Post ( nypost.com/2014/09/21/how-a-bronx-charter-school-is- revolutionizing-education/ ), and teach classes or work in operations or development. After school hours, they lead El Camino, a Catholic extended day enrichment program for the students at Brilla. Fellows do not need a background in education (all majors are welcome), but they should have experience working with children. At the end of the day, Fellows go home to live with their peers in a Catholic faith community. AREA OF SERVICE: New York City LENGTH OF SERVICE: 11-month school year, with the option for a second year. REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor Degree (or higher); must be competent to fulfill one's job duties as a teacher and/or support staff; desire to enter into the school's culture with an open and receptive spirit; desire to serve the poor; desire to grow spiritually and to encourage students and colleagues in this; desire to live in an intentional community and to mutually support and challenge one another. FINANCIAL ARRANGEMENTS: Fellows receive a $1,000/month stipend. Fellows might also be eligible to receive an AmeriCorps Education Award (americorps.gov) and we have a partnership with Brilla for fellows to receive a masters degree, if interested. LIVING ARRANGEMENTS: Intentional Faith Community, private apartment in the Bronx. Fellows do not pay rent, but do contribute to community food costs. Utilities and internet are included. SIZE OF PROGRAM: 22 Fellows; 4 communities. TRAINING: Fellows receive a comprehensive orientation before the school year begins. The orientation program includes a retreat, Brilla Public Charter Schools on-boarding, professional development training, community building, additional teacher support training (e.g. classroommanagement techniques, lesson planning training, etc.) and community formation. Professional development and community & faith formation continues weekly for all fellows.
