A wide-spreading large shrub developing a flat-topped appearance. The young branches have a fuzzy texture similar to a deer's antlers when in velvet. The dense, conical clusters of crimson, hairy fruits on the female plant are most decorative at the end of the year. Vivid orange to red fall color. Will sucker and form a nice colony. Handsome, flat topped white flowers appear in late spring and the forest green foliage turns a spectacular reddish-maroon in the fall. Smooth Sumac is a valuable native plant throughout the northern United States. Very similar to Staghorn Sumac in form and function with the main difference being the smooth new growth on this species. Will colonize into small groupings of short, low branched trees.
