Thank you, my humans, for freeing me from that crowded pet store and bringing me to your beautiful home. I saw the downstairs in passing on my way to little Timmy’s bedroom, where I spend most of my time going round and round on my wheel. Then I go around some more listening to the drone of household noises and Fluffy the frightening cat hissing at the bedroom door. We guinea pigs don’t have the star power of your other pets. I don’t get taken on long walks or get to chase a ball like Rover the dog, or have a special box to “do my business” like Fluffy the frightening cat. Nope, I’m in the cage 23/7 minus the one hour Timmy sets me free in his bedroom. He has been warned to keep the door closed so Fluffy can’t get in and torment me. But who expects an 8-year-old boy to remember such details? Sometimes, the house is a scary place for such a sweet creature as I am. Thankfully, I am equipped with a pretty strong jaw, as Fluffy found out recently when she cornered me under Timmy’s bed and swatted at me with her unmanicured claws. We may have reached a state of détente thanks to my making a jaw-on-paw connection. You may think I’m in a mindless state when I’m on my wheel going round and round and round. And round again. The truth is I’m trying to get in better aerobic shape so I can outrun Fluffy and make my eventual escape from this house. I’ve heard you humans talk about a doggy door – I hope Rover, who is a mellow dude, will show me where it is – or at least how to work the door knob. Once I’m free, I will find a herd of other escaped guinea pigs, something like the colony of escaped parrots in San Francisco. We’ll lie in the grass and enjoy the sunshine, foraging on berries and expensive garden plants. Wait... what’s that shadow overhead??? It’s coming closer! A HAWK! And its claws are bigger than Fluffy’s! Everyone, to the doggy door! Head upstairs to Timmy’s room! Timmy, you’re going to have to ask your parents for a bigger cage.
