Soler Power Shines Atlanta Braves designated hitter Jorge Soler slugs a three-run home run during the third inning of Game 6 of the World Series. Soler’s blast gave the Braves an early lead over the Houston Astros, which they never gave up on the way to winning 7-0. L.A.’s Kupp Runneth Over Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Cooper Kupp catches a 1-yard touchdown pass thrown by quarterback Matthew Stafford with just 1:25 left in the game to clinch a 23-20 win for the Rams over the Cincinnati Bengals on Feb. 13 at Super Bowl LVI in Los Angeles. Kupp was named the game’s MVP with 8 catches for 92 yards and 2 touchdowns, almost all of it coming on the game-winning drive. Winter Wonderland Snowboarder Julia Marino reacts to winning silver in the Women’s Snowboarding Slopestyle. Her win was the first medal earned by a U.S. athlete at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing. The games had some of the lowest viewing rates in recent years, in part due to criticism about the actions of China’s government. • The U.S. Soccer Federation announces it will begin offering the same pay structure to both its women’s and men’s teams. • Football referee Maia Chaka becomes the first Black woman to referee an NFL game. • The Norwegian women’s beach handball team protests the required bikini bottoms, and players are allowed to instead wear shorts as part of their uniform. Athletes compete in the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan, which were moved to summer 2021 due to COVID-19. Gymnast Simone Biles struggled in her early events, and she shocked many fans when she withdrew for mental health reasons. Sprinter Allyson Felix won bronze in the 400 meter and gold as part of the 4x400 meter relay team. Her 11 total medals made Felix the most decorated American track athlete ever.
