parts, then feeds on a cow that is tear ing, depositing these two types of Moraxella bacteria. She flies as far as three miles for the next meal, spread ing pinkeye to the next herd. The cornea, a transparent, dome-shaped covering, protects the eye unless it is damaged. “Infectious Bovine Rhinotracheitis (IBR), a herpes virus, can also weaken the eyes, as can irrita tion from a scratch or dust,” Strickland explains. “Once damaged, the eye’s defenses are weakened, making the eye more susceptible to pinkeye.” Cattle potentially spread pinkeye as they rub their faces on inanimate objects, such as mineral feeders, hay feeders, and feed bunks. Carrier ani mals in the herd also spread pinkeye this way. The next cow that rubs against the feeder picks up the bacte ria, resulting in pinkeye. Strickland recommends that pro ducers treat pinkeye with a long-last ing antibiotic, injected in the neck, or by squirting the antibiotic directly in the eye. “After the antibiotic treatment, put a patch over the eye,” Strickland advises. “Sunlight irritates the eye even more because the eye is so sensitive during this infection. This treatment reduces contact with shedding Moraxella , preventing flies from picking up the bacteria and tak ing it to another animal.” Because all injectable antibiotics are prescription-only items, working with a veterinarian to develop a Veterinary Client-Patient-Relationship (VCPR) is essential to receive and use antibiot ics for pinkeye and other infections. “Antibiotics work on pinkeye but are not labeled for pinkeye,” Strickland warns. “If a farmer decides to use an antibiotic the veterinarian prescribed for another issue, then uses it to treat pinkeye, that’s called extra-label drug use . That’s illegal. The veterinar ian can prescribe that antibiotic and method to the farmer specifically for pinkeye or write it on the label, giv ing the producer permission to use it for pinkeye. Then the operator is under a VCPR, using the prescription legally. Work with your veterinarian to develop treatments, when and how to use them, and which antibiotic to use.” Prevention strategies can reduce eye irritation. Clip pastures, so tall seed
