We even have customers considering removing fences because now it’s getting in their way.” Ranchers using the technology have reported to Gallagher that their work/life situ ation is more balanced because they have more time to spend with family. “Virtual fencing is proving to be a game changer in many ways,” Liebergreen says. “I believe we will see even greater use for the technology, such as intensification of grazing practices and benefits for both the environ ment and ranching businesses and families.” How can a producer determine if virtual fenc ing fits their system well? “It depends on what problem they’re trying to solve,” Liebergreen says. “They should be aware that, while the livestock must be trained for virtual fencing, ranchers and farmers require training to use it, too. The eShepherd platform is very intuitive, but it does require a level of technical ability.” That’s not to say that technology is too com plex for the average person. Some ranchers who have never used a computer or owned a cell phone are acquiring both devices and learning to use virtual fencing.
