If money grew on trees, you wouldn’t need BRUTE ® .
Save money on pest control with fast-acting, long-lasting BRUTE ® Pour-on for Cattle. Why waste money on high-priced IGR pour-ons when you can get all the fly control you’ll ever need with BRUTE ® Pour-on for Cattle? Just one application of rain-resistant BRUTE ® controls biting flies for up to six full weeks. When applied as directed, BRUTE ® controls horn flies, face flies, horse flies, stable flies, deer flies, house flies, black flies and mosquitoes without the added cost of an IGR. In fact, super-concentrated BRUTE ® costs about half as much per head as IGR pour-ons. Plus, BRUTE ® provides up to eight weeks of proven lice control. So, unless you have money trees growing on your ranch, switch to BRUTE ® for effective, economical fly control. To learn more, see your livestock products supplier or visit www.y-tex.com today.

sign and predict the weather pretty darn good. A lot of the old cowbosses that mentored us had their little tricks they’d use to prepare for the weather, which was extremely important for a cowboy crew since once you were com mitted to working a section of coun try, there was no quitting. You had to work it no matter what the weather was. I guess you could say those old boys were pretty good meteorologists back in the day.
And I’m pretty easy with offering my bless ings, too. “God Bless every one of you who: assumes a position on a cattle association; hauls cattle for a liv ing; is a veterinarian; all the ranch moms,

Imagine what our grandfathers would have thought of that. Christine and I like to keep connected to the old ways. She taught me how to start a fire using flint and steel (she used to belong to a black powder shoot ing club). I’m not very good at it, but when it works, I sure as heck think about all the folks before matches and lighters whose very lives depended on being able to get a fire going. In keeping with that level of connectivity, we picked up an old barometer / humidity gauge / thermom eter at an estate sale, just like Grandpa had. It’s pretty darn accurate, and it reminds me of the old-timers before dop pler who could really read the
When you’re a part of some thing as intertwined as rural life and agriculture it’s easy to be connected to God. And for that, I am truly thankful. Catch you next Friday on the WR Facebook page. OLD TIME METEOROLOGISTS We had a massive monsoon come through the Southwest a few weeks back; it broke all the May moisture records, and it got me thinking. I have access in my pocket, through the National Weather Service’s website, to a doppler radar clip of any monster storm coming my way, or anywhere in North America.

For additional information about adverse drug experience reporting for animal drugs, contact FDA at 1-888-FDAVETS, or http://www.fda.gov/reportanimalae. PRECAUTIONS: As a class, cyclo-oxygenase inhibitory NSAIDs may be associated with gastrointestinal, renal, and hepatic toxicity. Sensitivity to drug-associated adverse events varies with the individual patient. Patients at greatest risk for adverse events are those that are dehydrated, on diuretic therapy, or those with existing renal, cardiovascular, and/or hepatic dysfunction. Concurrent administration of potentially nephrotoxic drugs should be carefully monitored. NSAIDs may inhibit the prostaglandins that maintain normal homeostatic function. Such anti-prostaglandin effects may result in clinically significant disease in patients with underlying or pre existing disease that have not been previously diagnosed. Since many NSAIDs possess the potential to produce gastrointestinal ulceration, concomitant use of RESFLOR GOLD ® with other anti-inflammatory drugs, such as NSAIDs or corticosteroids, should be avoided or closely monitored. Flunixin is a cyclo-oxygenase inhibitory NSAID, and as with others in this class, adverse effects may occur with its use. The most frequently reported adverse effects have been gastrointestinal signs. Events involving suspected renal, hematologic, neurologic, dermatologic, and hepatic effects have also been reported for other drugs in this class. Not for use in animals intended for breeding purposes. The effects of florfenicol on bovine reproductive performance, pregnancy, and lactation have not been determined. Toxicity studies in dogs, rats, and mice have associated the use of florfenicol with testicular degeneration and atrophy. NSAIDs are known to have potential effects on both parturition and the estrous cycle. There may be a delay in the onset of estrus if flunixin is administered during the prostaglandin phase of the estrous cycle. The effects of flunixin on imminent parturition have not been evaluated in a controlled study. NSAIDs are known to have the potential to delay parturition through a tocolytic effect. RESFLOR GOLD ® , when administered as directed, may induce a transient reaction at the site of injection and underlying tissues that may result in trim loss of edible tissue at slaughter. RESIDUE WARNINGS: Animals intended for human consumption must not be slaughtered within 38 days of treatment. This product is not approved for use in female dairy cattle 20 months of age or older, including dry dairy cows. Use in these cattle may cause drug residues in milk and/or in calves born to these cows. A withdrawal period has not been established in pre-ruminating calves. Do not use in calves to be processed for veal. ADVERSE REACTIONS: Transient inappetence, diarrhea, decreased water consumption, and injection site swelling have been associated with the use of florfenicol in cattle. In addition, anaphylaxis and collapse have been reported post-approval with the use of another formulation of florfenicol in cattle. In cattle, rare instances of anaphylactic-like reactions, some of which have been fatal, have been reported, primarily following intravenous use of flunixin meglumine. CLINICAL PHARMACOLOGY: The pharmacokinetics (PK) of florfenicol (Table 1) and flunixin (Table 2) after subcutaneous injection of RESFLOR GOLD ® is described below: Table 1. It acts by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit and inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis. Florfenicol is generally considered a bacteriostatic drug, but exhibits bactericidal activity against certain bacterial species. In vitro studies demonstrate that florfenicol is active against the BRD pathogens M. haemolytica, P. multocida, and H. somni, and M. bovis that florfenicol exhibits bactericidal activity against strains of M. haemolytica and H. somni . The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of florfenicol were determined for non-mycoplasmal BRD isolates obtained from calves enrolled in BRD field studies in the U.S. in 2006 using methods recommended by the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (M31-A2). MICs for M. bovis isolates were determined by an accepted method using Hayflick Broth with Alamar Blue (HBAN) medium under appropriate control. Isolates were obtained from pre-treatment nasal swabs from all calves enrolled at all four sites, post-treatment nasal swabs from treatment failures in the RESFLOR GOLD ® and saline control treatment groups at three sites, and lung tissue from one calf that died in the saline control treatment group. The results are shown in below Table 3. Table 3. Florfenicol MIC values* of indicated pathogens isolated from cattle with naturally-occurring BRD. Indicated pathogens Year of isolation Number of isolates MIC 50 ** (μg/mL) MIC 90 ** (μg/mL) MIC range (μg/mL) * The correlation between in vitro susceptibility data and clinical effectiveness is unknown. ** The lowest MIC to encompass 50% and 90% of the most susceptible isolates, respectively. EFFECTIVENESS: In a multi-site field study, calves with naturally-occurring BRD were treated with RESFLOR GOLD ® , Nuflor Gold (NADA 141-265), or saline. A treatment success was defined as a calf with normal respiration to mild respiratory distress, normal attitude to mildly depressed, and a rectal temperature < 104.0°F on Day 11. The treatment success rate for BRD for the RESFLOR GOLD ® treatment group (68.4%) was statistically significantly greater (p = 0.0255) compared to the saline control treatment group (42.9%). RESFLOR GOLD was non-inferior to Nuflor Gold for the treatment of BRD, with a one-sided 95% lower confidence bound for the difference between the two treatments equal to -13.2%. In the same study, the change in rectal temperature from pre-treatment to six hours post- treatment was evaluated to determine the effectiveness of RESFLOR GOLD ® for the control of BRD-associated pyrexia. The proportion of calves whose rectal temperatures decreased by ≥2.0 °F from pretreatment to six hours post treatment was statistically significantly greater (p = 0.0019) in the RESFLOR GOLD ® treatment group compared to the saline control treatment group. The mean decrease in rectal temperature from pre-treatment to six hours post- treatment was statistically significantly greater in the RESFLOR GOLD ® treatment group compared to the Nuflor Gold and saline control treatment groups (p = 0.0031 and 0.0002, respectively). The effectiveness of RESFLOR GOLD ® for the treatment of BRD associated with Mycoplasma bovis was demonstrated by examining the M. bovis data from cattle enrolled in the BRD treatment study described above. There were numerically more treatment successes (6 of 8 calves, 75%) than treatment failures (2 of 8 calves, 25%) in RESFLOR GOLD ® -treated calves that cultured positive for M. bovis pre-treatment. ANIMAL SAFETY: A target animal safety study was conducted to evaluate the effects of RESFLOR GOLD ® when administered to cattle subcutaneously at 1X, 3X, or 5X the labeled dose for three consecutive days (3X the labeled duration). Decreased feed and water consumption, and decreased body weights (secondary to decreased feed consumption) were observed in the 1X, 3X, and 5X groups. Injection site swellings were noted in the 1X, 3X, and 5X groups. A separate injection site study was conducted in cattle. The study demonstrated that RESFLOR GOLD ® , when administered according to the label directions, may induce a transient local reaction in the subcutaneous and underlying muscle tissue. STORAGE INFORMATION: Do not store above 30°C (86°F). Use within 28 days of first use. HOW SUPPLIED: RESFLOR GOLD ® is available in 100, 250, and 500 mL sterile, multiple-dose, glass vials. An old pair of Wranglers, belt attached, are laying on the floor. An old jackknife lays on the table beside an old whetstone. In the corner, a record still sits on the spindle of a gramophone. The large mug beside his plate is brown from coffee stains. But these are only mementos of a GREAT COWBOY who once rode these plains. His moccasins are beside each other on the bottom stair. His ropes are neatly coiled and stashed behind the door.

Defend Cellular Security Camera from Tactacam got a chance to unpack and hook up Tactacam’s Defend Cellular Security Camera . It was easy to set up, easy to subscribe to a plan, and the images are very hi-definition. I really like the solar charging add-on. The cam era and solar unit are exceedingly well built and sturdy enough to attach to any solid object and leave you with a feeling that it’s gonna be there next time you come to check on the property. Another thing I like about this system is the online dashboard — it is intuitive, easy for us old guys to navigate, and there’s chat support right there, ready and willing to answer your questions. I did have a little trouble accessing the battery compart ment (must be a cowboy thing) but a quick search got me to the right YouTube.

NRCS ASSISTANCE FOR REMOTE WATERING FACILITIES
Ranchbot water monitoring applies for NRCS grants through Conservation Practice Standard (CPS) 374 and CPS 614. If a producer already has a watering facility and would like to add a water lever monitor, they can visit their local NRCS office and inquire about this particular CPS enhancement. Ranchbot water monitoring solutions are enabled by Viasat’s satellite network, which has global coverage for the most remote operations. For CPS 374 to be contracted under EQIP, the producer must already have a watering facility in place. CPS 374 provides an incentive for installing a remote water level monitor to be more energy efficient. So, producers can get financial assistance for remote water level monitors through either EQIP or CSP. To get started, producers should visit their local USDA NRCS service center: https://www.nrcs.usda.gov/

BY TERRYN “T” DRIELING Terryn’s RANCHWEAR REVIEW
Hats Off to You
APPAREL FOR THE WORKING RANCH
These days, with the rising popu larity of Western wear, it’s getting tougher to tell who’s been horseback since they were knee-high to a grass hopper and who just bought their first pair of boots. And honestly, that’s okay. Because whether you’re work ing cattle or working up the courage to try something new, your hat ought to fit you and your lifestyle. Tom’s Take Aside from my 4-H and college equestrian team horse showing days, I’ve never been much of a cowboy hat wearer. My go-to lids are my wool hat in the winter and my ball caps in the summer. So, it’s Tom’s Take on the topic this time around. Twister Hats Back in the summer of ’22, Tom made the switch from the palm leaf hats he’d worn (not the same one of course) for a dozen years or better back to straw. He was looking for something lighter weight and a hat that wouldn’t hold onto sweat (and stink) quite as bad as his palm leaves had. The brand he went with was Twister. He went with the Twister Twisted Natural Weave to be exact. Full dis closure, what initially drew him to the Twister brand was the price tag. Stepping back into straw after all those years, he wasn’t too keen on spending a whole lot on a hat he may not like or that may not work out. He was also he cowboy hat has long been more than sun pro tection — it’s a state ment. A shape, a style, a silhouette that once told you where a person was from and what kind of work they did.

drawn to the free shaping they offered in-store when he bought it. Last I reviewed hats, Tom had his hat for a year, so we couldn’t really speak to longevity. But now, he’s headed into his fourth straw season with the same hat. His hat has not only held up to the wear and tear he puts it through, but it also still looks nice. So, the bet on Twister — it did work out, it didn’t break the bank, and he’s been really pleased with the shape and how the hat’s held up. He hasn’t tried one yet, but in addition to their wide variety of straw options, Twister also has some options in felt as well. Tom purchased his Twister hat from The Fort at their brick-and-mortar store in Lincoln, Nebraska. Twister Hats can also be found at various other retailers, like Cavender’s, Boot Barn, Sheplers, and Capital Hatters. Reader’s Choice One brand and one custom hatter stood out when I took it to the readers. American Hat Company When I think of straw hats, the brand that pops immediately into my head is American Hat Company. So, it came as no surprise that this brand was

one of the reader recs this time around. What I wasn’t aware of, though, is that American Hat Company also has a wide selection of felt hats. When I ask readers what they love about American Hats, it’s always the quality. All American Hat Company hats are made by hand in Bowie, Texas. Their felts are made from high-quality furs blended to American Hat Company specs and are finished by hand. Their 1000X felts are made of pure belly beaver blended with mink. Their straw hats are double-lacquered and double-pressed, which helps them withstand the elements, hold their shape, and last a good long while. Learn more and find a retailer at www.americanhat.net

Capital Hatters Capital Hatters, out of Stephenville, Texas, is a custom hat shop specializ ing in handcrafted felt and straw hats. Founded in 2004 by James Andrae in his garage, the business has since expanded into a 5,000-square-foot facility offering a wide range of prod ucts and services. “Capital Hatters are awesome! We have a couple custom hats from them that we’re real happy with. They also carry some off the rack felts and straws as well,” said one reader. As far as custom hats go, they offer everything from 10X rabbit to 100X beaver felt, and if you really want to go big, there’s the Signature Series hand-shaped by founder James Andrae himself. And when you go the custom route, you customize every thing — size, color, brim width, crown height, shape, and band style. Capital Hatters also has a solid lineup of off the rack hats from brands
like American, Resistol, Rodeo King, and Twister. They also offer hat cleaning and renovation, plus boot, saddle, and leather repair, which means if you wear it or ride it, they can probably fix it. They’re based in Stephenville, but they hit the road to ranch rodeos and WRCA events, meeting their custom ers literally where they’re at. www.shopcapitalhatters.com

improvement was made with the invention of barbed wire. Even with this invention, brute strength and determination were needed to dig the holes to set the fence posts. While it still takes strength and physicality to build a good fence, fence pounders have created a way to streamline the process and en sure the quality of the project. The first manual post pounder was in vented in 1933. Since then, there have been many variations and in recent years this simple concept has been mechanized.
Even though many agriculture pro ducers hire out their fence work, they have fencing materials on hand for mending and smaller projects. Some producers still choose to build their own fences and are looking for ways to make it less labor-intensive and time-consuming. Good fences are essential for pasture and herd man agement, so quality is most important. Anyone who grew up on acreage probably has a not-so-fond memory of the classic t-post pounder with a capped tube in the middle with han dles on either side. There is no doubt this simple device has built character and taught many lessons to young sters who were “asked” to help dad build or repair a fence. Even though it 24 I SUMMER 2025 WORKING RANCH audited readers run 21 million head of beef cattle.

still takes quite a bit of manual labor this post pounder is a great inexpen sive tool to keep on hand for quick fixes or temporary solutions. As you look at fence pounders to meet your preferences, it is import ant to consider the ground on which the fence will be built to determine the durability and type of pounder you will need. Air-driven and hydrau lic-powered pounders will be a bet ter choice for rocky or perpetually hard ground while gasoline-powered pounders will handle less extensive projects on softer ground more effec tively. Looking at specifications such as the striking speed and energy class of the pounder can help you narrow A gas-powered fence pounder is a great option for projects around the headquarters or house. While it wouldn’t be ideal for building miles of fence line, it can certainly make those smaller projects easier and help to guarantee that a post is set correctly. Gas-powered drivers are still hand-op erated and small enough to carry around with you in the ranch rig while checking fences. Commonly, gas-pow ered pounders are offered with a two or down your choice. GAS-POWERED

four-stroke engine. However, if you are planning on using it for a large project the size of the gas tank is a drawback. Most models have a fuel tank capacity of only 1 liter (0.26 gallons). This is by design, however. It wouldn’t be ideal to carry around and lift a fence pounder with a bigger fuel tank. Prices on these pounders can range anywhere from $300 to $2,500 based on the quality that you are looking for. In the more expensive models, you will see durabil ity reflected in the price. AIR-DRIVEN AND HYDRAULIC For large fencing projects air-driven and hydraulic pounders would be your best option. There are hydraulic fence pounders on the market that are still considered to be “hand operated” before you move into some of the more industrial-size pounders. These fence pounders are relatively small and can be placed in the bed of your truck for transport. These would be ideal for rocky ground as they provide more power to meet the depth specification for the fence posts. You will need a hydraulic power

pack, skid steer, or mini excavator to run the pounder from. The fence pounder can be operated by one per son if needed. If you do not already own a skid steer, there is an added cost with the hydraulic power pack as most are sold separately from the pounder. Prices for these hydraulic fence pound ers can start at $4,000 with the power packs starting at $6,000. However, efficiency is an important commodity to agriculture producers as they are constantly looking to maximize their time. Hydraulic fence pounders cer tainly offer efficiency. A powerful leader in the fence pounder market is the air-driven pounder. Also considered hand-op erated, you hook up the pounder to an air compressor for use. Air-driven pounders are the happy medium between the hand-operated hydraulic pounder and large hydraulic pound ers that are mounted on a skid steer or tractor. Air-driven pounders are often more portable and easier to maneuver by one person because they do not require a machine’s hydraulic system. Air-driven pounders can cost as low as $1,100. Considering air compressors are a common item on a farm or ranch, this might be the most cost-effective
option for a larger fencing job. For your biggest fencing job, there are a multitude of fence pounder options that are mounted on a skid steer, excavator, or tractor. It is com mon to see fencing companies use these mounted hydraulic pounders because of the larger scale of their fencing jobs. When looking at these options it is important to know the specifications of the machine you will be operating the pounder on to ensure the hydraulic limit is not exceeded. Mounted hydraulic pounders are ideal for driving pipe when it’s time to build your gate posts. There are even models with grapple capabilities that allow you to pick up the post off the ground, load it in the pounder, and drive the post, all without leaving the comfort of your seat. Prices for these pounders can start at $2,000 with the higher end of the price range being around $15,000. This is due to the myriad of customi zations and implements you can add to your pounder upon purchase. It is great to see so many options available for fence pounders to make them more accessible to the agricul ture industry. The process and tools needed for building a fence have come a long way since the 1800s.
