P roducers who do not fol low label instructions when giving Modified Live Vaccines (MLV) to their calves are probably wast ing money. Rancher, Clayton Gardner, says although it is challenging, espe cially when working outside, handling vaccines correctly is extremely import ant. He constantly works to perfect his handling and vaccination techniques. Gardner, his father, Bill, and his brother, Cole own and oper ate Manzano Angus Ranches in south-central New Mexico. Cole ranches near Yeso; Clayton and Bill raise cattle near Estancia.
To develop healthy calves, the Gardners try to accomplish positive fetal programming through mineral and vaccination programs, keeping cows and first-calf heifers in good shape. They give cows a shot at weaning. “We set up cows to have healthy colostrum for their calves,” Gardner explains. “Then we target calf health. We give the first round of respiratory, Bovine Viral Diarrhea (BVD), and blackleg shots for two-month-old calves at branding.” Gardner hires experienced employ ees who work cattle slowly and quietly, which reduces stress during wean ing, vaccinations, and branding. The Gardners breed their cattle to have
good dispositions because they stress less. “We don’t try to wean 400 calves in one day,” Gardner advises. “Work with smaller groups. Preweaning helps us because we work those calves, introduce them to that environment, and then they return to their mothers, experiencing very little stress.” The Manzano Angus cattle receive minerals year-round. Because antago nists occurred in the water at one ranch, Gardner gave BO-SE and vitamin A, D, and E shots to newborn calves to pre vent White Muscle Disease.
