Wildkat spring sports are in full swing, working hard and celebrating gains and wins. There is a lot to be said about the tenacity of student-athletes competing outside in Texas weather in the Winter and Spring - it can be brutally cold and wet, and yet they persevere in big ways. If you have time, I encourage you to spend time supporting these athletes
by attending a game or match. It is amazing to see the dedication, sportsmanship and love of their sport in action. It is a busy season for sports in Willis ISD, and we can’t wait to watch our student-athletes succeed. Dr. Tim Harkrider Willis ISD Superintendent

WILDKAT NATION
As a district, we want to provide our students in athletics and fine arts with an opportunity to succeed in their respective programs. We want this success to carry over into the community, and we want them to take it with them when they leave our schools. We are grateful for a community that supports our students and
understands that it truly takes all of us to ensure our students are successful moving through school as a Wildkat. We want ALL Wildkats to have a chance to succeed in life. Jason Glenn Willis ISD Executive Director of Athletics and Fine Arts

We had some epic battles against The Woodlands and Oak Ridge, but it just made us better.” “The strength of this team has been leadership from the seniors and team chemistry,” she said. “The seniors are my first group to coach all four years at Willis and they knew my expectations. They have bought in and really helped me change the culture for Willis softball. Our team chemistry is there as well. These girls have so much fun together and truly are all best friends. which means we are aiming for the third round and beyond.” The “Lucky 7” battled all season, reaching the postseason. But there were so many contributors who also led the Wildkats to the playoffs, none bigger than ace pitcher Kynlei Chapman. Chapman had a 29 strike out game against College Park and she is committed to McLennan. Freshman Addie Hall had a breakout season along with sophomore Sydney Prihoda. Junior Cody Hicks also contributed some timely hitting and Sydni Garcia patrolled the outfield. “Every game in this district is like a playoff

With numerous players returning this Spring, Washburn will have plenty of talent to work with in year one. “We’re definitely looking to compete and build off of last season’s success,” Washburn said. “We play in one of the best districts around (13-6A) and Houston-area baseball is incredibly strong as it is. That being said, we intend to be competitive in every game this year.” He also acknowledged some of the players who were his standouts on the diamond. “We’ve got lefty Maddox Keo, who’s been a starting arm on this team since his freshman year,” said Washburn. “He is now committed to Rice and will definitely be a guy we look to at the top of our pitching

as beneficial. The district, coaches and athletes love having the students around and they do a great job. “These kids are some of the best in the building. They make the best grades, have the best discipline and they’re always here. These kids are awesome.” It is not required for students to be seeking a career in the medical field to participate, but it can “help you get to where you want to be by providing an opportunity to be in this program”. Many of their graduates do pursue a career in the medical field, but McClatchy said the lessons learned in their program outside of medical knowledge is what they will carry on forever. “There’s an opportunity to learn about life in general when you come into this program,” McClatchy said. “Responsibility, leadership, teamwork — You have to come together and learn how to do. Obviously, we are going to teach them CPR, basic first aid, and how to handle certain situations when working with teens. “But the biggest thing they get out of this is what it takes to be a part of a group. So, when they get out of high school, they have learned to work with other people and make decisions to move a program forward in a positive way.”
take care of our athletes in a more effective manner,” McClatchy said. The plan ended up expanding the training room from those 960-square-feet to 2,500-square-feet. A much larger wet room space with cold tub therapy machines, larger space for more rehab machines, more treatment tables, taping areas and a locker room for the student athletic trainers were just some of the upgrades included in the remodel. “The facility is beautiful, but it is the functionality of the facility that is most impressive,” McClatchy said. It is McClatchy and Houston Methodist Outreach Athletic Trainers Jordan Gonzales, MS, LAT, ATC and Jordan Terrell, MS, LAT, ATC, who call this facility home. Here they take care of Willis High School athletes and at the same time teach student-athletic trainers, McClatchy said they average between 14 to 16 students per year in the program but have carried as many as 24 in a year. “Our student-athletic training program here has always been a strong one,” McClatchy said. “We’re carrying on that tradition. We have a few more kids than we used to, obviously. It’s a great program and one that the community sees who play a vital role throughout the year.
WITH HIS OWN EYES, SCOTT MCCLATCHY HAS WATCHED “LITTLE WILLIS” GROW UP OVER THE YEARS. The Willis ISD head athletic trainer, who graduated from Texas A&M in 1994 and moved to Willis shortly after in 1997, has never left. McClatchy’s two daughters, Madison and Lauren, grew up in the community and graduated from Willis High School in 2016 and 2019, respectively. They both were cheer captains for the Wildkats. Finally, his wife Melissa currently serves as an Assistant Principal at Meador Elementary School in Willis ISD. Over their 25 years in Willis, McClatchy has watched the area boom, growing from a Class 4A program to now competing in Class 6A athletics – the UIL’s highest classification. With the boom in numbers, they needed to grow their facilities with it. One of those was the athletic training room, which when McClatchy came back four years ago, was still a 960-square-foot room – not big enough for their program. “The architect came up with a good gameplan where we could tear down some walls and revamp some existing space. That allowed us to create a nice, big, open facility to

WILLIS GIRLS SOCCER ACCOMPLISHED A
TREMENDOUS MILESTONE IN THE PROGRAM’S HISTORY IN 2023. Under the direction of coach Alyssa Maynard, the Wildkats enjoyed an impressive regular season finishing with a record Willis earned the third spot in a competitive District 13-6A, which features perennial title contenders The Woodlands and Grand Oaks. However, Willis didn’t stop there. In shocking fashion, the Lady Wildkats knocked the favored Aldine Mustangs (13 3-2 Record) out of the playoffs in the Bi-District round by a score of 3-2, marking the team’s first postseason victory since 2014. Unfortunately for the Wildkats, they were eliminated in the subsequent round by Tomball (3-1) despite an admirable effort. Other than the team making history, Willis has several individual stars. Senior Lucy Smith was inspirational all season leading the attack along with Annaliese Rodriguez Chelsea Mentado-Perez was a great distributor of the ball. Sophomore goalkeeper Georgia Pugh came up with some key saves throughout the season. Expect Willis to build on the successes and experience of this season and come back even stronger in 2024. of 10-3-4 (excluding tournament games). (Sr. MF), who had double-digit goals. It was better this year since I was placed in it. I drew a picture of my great grandfather, so that was my inspiration. I would encourage other artists to put their work out there and take the opportunities they get to their advantage.” Although surprised by her results, other students also decided to base their artwork off of a family member, hoping to capture the perfect moment of innocence. “I was surprised because I didn’t think that I was going to do well this year, but I ended up placing,” junior Heather Rodriguez said. “Last year I also did well, but this year I was happy to get a gold medal.
