A quality athletic experience that fosters opportunities for our student-athletes and the ability to build championship-caliber programs are fundamental practices for the SPX Athletic Program. This year we reflect and celebrate historic seasons for our girls soccer team and our boys lacrosse teams, in addition to broken school and individual records posted by some of our swimmers, runners, and tennis players – not to mention the numerous TAPPS All-State and All District honors. All of these accolades and more are highlighted through-out the 2021-2022 St. Pius X High School VYPE E-mag, which focuses on celebrating and documenting the great things that the SPX student

athletes and coaches accomplished throughout the year. Please join me in celebrating these Veritas men and women who continue to help carry on the tradition of athletic excellence at St. Pius X High School! Looking ahead to the 2022-2023 school year, the SPX athletic department has established the tag line, “Ignite Your Power” - which is featured on the cover. It reflects our goal as a department to develop our student-athletes into the best versions of themselves through embodying the spirit of our mascot, The Panther, which is incredibly strong and fearless. Go Panthers! Sincerely, Jeffrey S. Feller, CMAA Athletic Director St. Pius X High School

DEAR SPX FAMI LY

Reflecting on the 2021-2022 school year fills me with extraordinary pride. Time and time again as an educator, I find my own life enriched from the students we teach at St. Pius X High School. It has been inspiring to watch these young men and women embody integrity, sportsmanship, discipline, and commitment both in the classroom and on the field. Simply put, they are Veritas in action. St. Pius X High School values the vital role that athletics play in enhancing a college-preparatory education, and we are proud to offer a myriad of opportunities for students, both men and women, to participate in – rugby, swim, sports medicine, lacrosse, and much more. Despite coming out of an unusual season of pandemic related protocols, our athletic programs have not missed a beat. SPX student-athletes have continued to demonstrate resilience and discipline as they build confidence and maximize their potential in the sports of their choosing.

Our athletes directly benefit from the dedication of our community – it cannot go amiss that what is accomplished in our classrooms and during our sporting events every day is a testament to the combined efforts of many--the talent and heart of our faculty and staff, the tireless support of families, the loud, passionate cheers of our alumni and the arduous work of our SPX Booster Club. It is because of our efforts together that we can watch our students take on the world – and succeed. To each one of you who has cheered from the stands, shown support during an athletic fundraiser, or carpooled your student (and possibly others) for many a late-night game – thank you! I am truly honored to be a part of such a rich tradition and look forward to the victories yet to come. With my warmest gratitude, Rachel Ware Principal St. Pius X High School

\\ By J o s h u a Ko c h

has graduated. VYPE asked the 2021-2022 cover kids two questions each as they walk away from successful athletic careers as a panther. Their answers were fun, emotional and impactful.

WHAT IS YOUR LEGACY? That is a question many people are asked at the end of their time at a par ticular place. Whether that be playing for or coaching at a school . At St . Pius X , another large senior class

1. What is your favorite memory at St. Pius X? 2. What did you enjoy the most about attending SPX and being a Panther?

Michael Fite Sam Houston State – Rugby 1. Going to State for rugby my freshman year [was my favorite memory]. Just getting to bond with some of the older guys and having them help me and guide me into my future. 2. Definitely the camaraderie. Some of these people I’ve met, I’m going to have them in my life forever. They are just really nice and genuine people.

Breelyn Sanborn University of Incarnate Word – Basketball 1. It would be going far in playoffs last year and beating all the teams that people didn’t think we would beat. 2. I liked the community because I was new my junior year. I was scared to come in with new people, a new team but everyone was really welcoming. I got a lot of friends really fast.

6 \\ ST. P I U S X \\ J U N E 2022 \\ s t p i u s x . o rg

Kayleigh Schultea Sam Houston State – Volleyball 1. My favorite memory was Project Prom this year. It was a lot of fun and a big bonding moment for the senior class. 2. The support system here.

Trent Caram Lamar University – Baseball 1. I would say the bus rides back to school after taking a dub, listening to music and eating Whataburger. 2. Everyone is there to support you, especially the coaches. All the friends on the baseball team support you no matter where you go.

Alex Gutierrez Sam Houston State – Rugby 1. I would say this year when we played Strake Jesuit [in rugby]. People stacked the odds against us, and we ended up winning by a point in the last minute. 2. I would say the friendships I made here, because a lot of these guys I’ve grown up with since freshman year. Some even since middle school. Now, I’m going to go to college with one of them and play rugby with him.

s t p i u s x . o rg / / J U N E 2022 / / ST. P I U S X / / 7

Myles Daughtry Texas Lutheran University – Baseball 1. Probably my freshman year. I was [with the JV] at St. Thomas and out of nowhere Coach Evans called our coach to tell me to come to the varsity game. It was about to start. We had to drive super-fast to get there. 2. The community, everyone is so friendly.

Jefferson Page Oglethorpe University – Tennis 1. My district tournament win my sophomore or junior year. It was fun winning and feeling like a champion. 2. I liked the community; everyone is here for a good reason. Everyone is a good person.

Parker Milligan Soccer Management Institute (Rome) – Soccer 1. Prom. I liked dancing, so it was cool. [In soccer my favorite memory was] beating Beaumont Kelly in extra time. 2. I liked the community. Just seems like people are well connected.

8 \\ ST. P I U S X \\ J U N E 2022 \\ s t p i u s x . o rg

Kyle Winkler Sam Houston State – Baseball 1. It was my first game. I was nervous, I was a sophomore when I came here. First game on varsity and I didn’t know if the guys were going to like me. But it was like a big family when I came in. The first game all the stress went off my shoulders. 2. The family atmosphere. I transferred here and I didn’t have many friends. It took me about a week or so and I had a ton of friends. Tons of people who were accepting. It was good.

Max Bright Belmont Abbey College – Rugby 1. It must be when we went to New Orleans. I thought it was a good experience because we chilled in the hotel, had a good time. We went to the field; it was a nice day and we just dominated. 2. Just the bonding with all my friends. They helped with my work. I went to the teachers; they were very nice as well.

Carson Hintz Arkansas State University – Football 1. I would say winning the Homecoming Game my senior year. The past few years we hadn’t won it, so it was awesome to win that one. 2. My friends, the community and how together everybody is.

Getting to this place in his life, being the all-time leader in tackles, signing to play college football , being the leader on and off the field, Hintz admits that this wasn’ t done alone. “He’s everything. There was a family atmosphere and Hintz tried to play his role in “helping foster the culture”. Cranfill will tell you he did just that . “Carson is one of the most dynamic and impactful football players in the history of St Pius X football ,” Cranfill said. “He understands the impor tance of doing his job in the classroom, in the weight room, and on the field on Friday night . He is a two-year captain and has always been about “ the TEAM” first .

In his senior season, Hintz set the new mark for career tackles getting to 260 (144 solo, 116 assisted) in just 29 career games. That is an impressive nine tackles per game. He finished with 16 tackles for loss, 11 QB hurries, eight sacks, five pass deflections, two interceptions and two fumble recoveries. “I think I set a pretty good example of what people should strive to do,” Hintz said. “ To leave a culture of being great .” In Hintz ’s high school career, the St . IN THE GAME OF TENNIS, PLAYERS ARE ALWAYS EVOLVING. “I think it ’s more mental ,” Jefferson Page said. “My freshman and sophomore year I was running more on instinct . Now, I’m more mature and more focused. Every shot I hit is more calculated.” For the St . Pius X senior, the evolution of his game on the hardtop over his years donning the black and orange has translated into an ultra successful high school career. This past spring it culminated with a trip to the TAPPS 6A State Tennis Tournament for a second-straight year. Page reached the State Semifinals at the Waco Regional Tennis Center in April after defeating Joshua Saland of Parish Episcopal (7-5, 6-0) and Marcos Gonzalez of El Paso Cathedral High School (6-0, 6-0). Page’s success on the tennis cour t over the years also garnered collegiate attention and this year he signed with Oglethorpe University in Atlanta. “It was surreal ,” Page said of signing to play college tennis. “I knew I could do it , I knew it was going to eventually happen. But when you do it , it ’s like ‘man, I really did this’. I’ve got four more years to keep playing, so that ’s great . “I love Atlanta. What I want to do academically was there and just the overall community there was great . So it seemed like the place for me.” Page, whose favorite professional tennis player to watch is Rafael Nadal , knows he needs to continue to get stronger and continue to improve his game as he takes the nex t step to the college level. As he walks away from St . Pius X , Page’s final piece of advice to future tennis players for the Panthers is three words – trust the process. “It ’s going to be tough,” Page said. “Just keep working, put in the work and you can do anything in tennis here at St . Pius X.”

Pius X rugby team instantly fell in love with “Buster ” as they named him. Stringfellow and his family immediately took Buster in and star ted taking care of the dog. As the 2022 rugby season progressed, Buster became a mainstay on the sidelines for the Panthers. The team would chant “For Buster ” before games and initiated him as the official team mascot . Buster quickly won the hear ts of many in the Houston community and became a local celebrity in the St . After playing with the dog for a shor t while, the rugby team watched as it wandered into a nearby yard, where two other dogs chained in the yard began to get aggressive. The Panthers’ rugby players watched as all-of-a-sudden the dog began to be attacked by the other dogs and they stepped in. LAURA FLORES STOOD ALONG THE SIDELINE AND STARED TOWARDS THE GAME CLOCK. Wearing a black St . Pius X soccer long-sleeved shir t and rocking her SPX hat backwards, Flores counted down the seconds. With just a few seconds left , the second-year coach star ted to run onto the field. By the time the horn sounded, and the rest of her team rushed on in celebration, the coach had reached her goalie Sarah Woods. Flores embraced Woods. They had just defeated St . Agnes Academy 2-1 in the TAPPS Division I State Semifinals to punch the program’s first-ever ticket to a State Championship match. “When we first got together with this team, we understood that we had a really good squad,” Flores said. “We have been working hard. They put their hear ts and souls into this. “ These kids mean a lot to me. They have changed my l i fe.” In the State Semifinals match it was junior Corrine Ward’s corner-kick goal – which she scored unassisted into the wind – that made the difference. “We’ve come a long way,” Ward said. “Last year we did OK but we really wanted to improve. This year, we hit our goal to make it to the State Championship.” Jackie Lesmeister added: “It was so exci ting. We put a whole lot into this season and to see i t al l pay off feels great .”

season schedule, then the playoffs is not easy. But according to Ward, what held this team together through the ups and downs that naturally come with a season was their bond. “We’re all best friends on and off the field, which makes it easier to play with each other,” she said. “Everyone on her contributed.” St . Pius X went on to fall short of winning the TAPPS Division I State Championship, falling to John Paul II, 2-0. Despite falling shor t of their goal , Flores said that bond that had been there all year long never wavered and will carry them into 2023. “ This was a great season for them,” Flores said. “You can see, even just after we lost in the State Championship, you can see the energy. You can see they ’re so together. I’m so proud of every single one of these kids. They show up to practice every day, they put in the hard work . This is what every soccer team wants, an oppor tunity to play at State. “ They came here . They showed up and I couldn’ t be prouder of them.”
