RATTLER NATION
Please enjoy the Spring 2024 edition of the San Marcos High School VYPE magazine. I want to personally thank Coach John Walsh, Athletic Director, and all the coaches and students who make this celebration of our Rattlers possible. Our mission in collaboration with community, families, staff, and students, is to provide challenging, real-world learning experiences in a expectations and professionalism, encouraging students’ academic curiosity, cultivating creativity, and enhancing foundational skills. This work centered around whole child development would not be possible without a supportive school board working alongside administration to promote multiple pathways of success for our students. This magazine is the living demonstration of our commitment. You will see from our students’ perspectives how our community works to provide our students in Rattler Nation with real-world experiences as they experience their educational journey culminating in graduation. We work closely with Texas State University across multiple departments, inspired by President Kelly Damphousse, President of Texas State University, who believes in the Rattler Up to Eat’Em Up pipeline. Our students represented in this magazine are just a microcosm of the work taking place across all campuses in San Marcos CISD. Are we perfect? safe, nurturing environment. We seek to demonstrate high
Certainly not, but action compels us to strive for perfection for our students. You will see our students are encouraged to be involved in multiple pathways. While some look at our accountability scores, this does not reflect the work that takes place daily with our 8,300 students and 1,300 staff members. This magazine showcases our 40 Early College High School students who will be walking the stage with their associate’s degree from Coastal Bend Community College on May 10, 2024, and increase from the 15 students in the inaugural class. It highlights our commitment to allowing students like Addison to be involved in multiple benefits not because it is easy but because it is not our place to limit our students. You will see athletes who are also Rattler’n Up in career and technology, advanced placement courses, early college high school, and dual-credit course with Austin Community College. We continue to expand choice for our students in a learner-centered environment. Our district is committed to providing a multitude of pathways and course offerings, in addition to providing mental health supports through SEL counselors and robust partnerships with Communities in School. We are not perfect, but our journey for our students compels action and iteration. I hope you enjoy this magazine. Rattler Up and enjoy. Dr. Michael A. Cardona Superintendent of Schools

Welcome to the third edition of the Vype Rattler Up Magazine. The purpose of this magazine is to showcase the opportunities that SMCISD students have in our extracurricular activities and educational pathways. Inside, you will find all of the athletic programs that represent Rattler Nation from the beginning of the school year to the end. Also represented, from the Fine Arts department, are our Rattler Band, Diamond Line Dance Team, and Cheer Squad. These pages clearly illustrate the Rattler Pride and school spirit that shine bright throughout these programs. Additionally, we have included our CTE department and Early College High School. Both of these educational pathways provide unique opportunities for our students and put them on a trajectory of sustainable success after high school.
At San Marcos High School leaders encourage our students to participate in any and all programs that draw their interest. Coaches, teachers and administrators collaborate to offer strategic schedules that support this effort. I’d like to extend a special thank you to Superintendent, Dr. Michael Cardona, and the Board of Trustees for always magazine and take some time to talk with your little Rattlers about finding the programs that interests them. We look forward to continuing to offer experiences that prove essential to a quality high school experience. supporting all things SMCISD. I hope as a parent, you enjoy the

SNAKE PIT THE WEARING THE PURPLE AND WHITE OF THE SAN MARCOS RATTLERS MEANS THAT YOU ARE PART OF THE RATTLER FAMILY. IT STARTS AT THE TOP WITH ATHLETIC DIRECTOR JOHN WALSH AS HE HAS CREATED A CULTURE OF COMMUNITY. THE RATTLERS HAD SEVERAL EXEMPLARY ACHIEVEMENTS IN 2023-24 AND ALSO LEARNED FROM THEIR SHORTCOMINGS. THAT’S THE BEAUTY OF PARTICIPATING IN HIGH SCHOOL EXTRA CURRICULARS… THE LIFE-LESSONS. HERE ARE SOME OF THE HEADLINERS THIS SCHOOL YEAR AND THEY GAVE IT THEIR ALL ON THEIR RESPECTIVE FIELDS OF PLAY.

THIS PAST YEAR WAS A TOUGH ONE, WITH ALL THE CIRCUMSTANCES THAT TOOK PLACE. BUT, THE BEST THING I CAN SAY ABOUT OUR CULTURE WAS THAT YOU WOULDN’T KNOW WHAT OUR RECORD WAS IF YOU CAME TO OUR PRACTICES, BECAUSE THE ENERGY WAS RIGHT. THE KIDS WERE PLAYING FOR THE RIGHT REASONS. EVERYONE HAD A GOOD TIME DOING

MY ULTIMATE GOAL FOR THESE GIRLS IS THAT THEY LEARN THE LIFE LESSONS AND TRAITS THAT ARE GAINED THROUGH ATHLETICS – PERSEVERANCE AND HOW TO BE A WINNER. WE ARE A PROGRAM WITH A HISTORY OF WINNING. IT’S A LOT OF PRESSURE TO UPHOLD THAT STANDARD. IT’S A YEAR OF REFINING OUR SKILLS, TECHNIQUE, SHOWMANSHIP AND TEAMWORK TO MAKE SURE WE ARE BETTER THAN THE YEAR BEFORE. OFF THE FLOOR, I’M TRYING TO TEACH THEM THAT THEY ARE ENOUGH, AND THAT THEIR EXPERIENCE IN DANCE CAN CARRY THEM THROUGH HIGH SCHOOL AND BEYOND. IT’S A LOT OF LIFE LESSONS AND MAKING THEM GREAT CITIZENS. Michelle Knight - San Marcos Dance Director

WE ARE A VERY YOUNG SQUAD AFTER GRADUATING EIGHT SENIORS LAST YEAR, BUT I’VE BEEN REALLY IMPRESSED WITH HOW OUR YOUNGER ATHLETES HAVE STEPPED UP ON THE COURT. WE HAVE SOME GREAT LEADERSHIP, AND THE ATMOSPHERE HAS BEEN GREAT ALL YEAR LONG. THERE IS A NEW SENSE OF COMPETITIVENESS WITHIN THE PROGRAM AND IT’S ONLY GOING TO GET STRONGER AS THEY YOUNGER PLAYERS DEVELOP. Coach Michael Martinez - San Marcos Tennis

OUR SEASON HAD ITS UPS AND DOWNS, BUT WE FINISHED WITH 21 WINS FOR THE VARSITY PROGRAM. I FEEL THAT OUR STRENGTH WAS THE FACT THAT OUR GUYS PLAYED AS A UNIT. WE HAD SOME STRUGGLES TAKING CARE OF THE BALL, WHICH MEANT WE NARROWLY MISSED THE PLAYOFFS. WE HAVE A GOOD RETURNING CLASS WHO WILL WORK HARD IN THE OFFSEASON, SO WE EXPECT TO MAKE IT BACK TO THE POSTSEASON. Coach Dan Miller - San Marcos Boys Basketball
