SPIRITUAL LIFE

Grounded in Christ, Concordia keeps focus on Jesus!

What sets Concordia apart from many schools is that we can process ALL OF LIFE through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. The staff at CLHS work hard to create a safe environment for everyone. Students who believe are able to deepen their love for Jesus and love those who don’t believe, while students who are still asking questions about faith are able to explore Jesus in theology class and respect their peers as they practice their faith each day. All students take a theology class during each of their years at Concordia. Chapel takes please each week and is led by the Worship Arts class students and teacher. Concordia is excited to offer Family Groups every week where each student is assigned a small group led by a faculty/staff member. This allows every student to be known and have a trusted adult on campus they can look to for support and leadership. Family Groups partner together for time in the Word, playing games, and prayer.

Concordia Class of 2024 Senior Prank Surprise...

Global Embrace Missions

Concordia’s Global Embrace starts right here in Tomball and the greater Houston area with our Christian Social Action class. Over 300 former and current students have served in the community, where they volunteer at several different service sites in the Tomball area. Every year, some of those students continue to partner with the service organizations after the class ends as well.

Our Global Embrace also extends to Costa Rica. CLHS has been building homes there since 2012 and several students just returned from a build in March 2023. Homes are able to be built due to the fundraising efforts of the Concordia community every Homecoming week. Over the last few years, over $25,000 has been raised by the students to help build homes for families in need, truly making Homecoming a HOMEcoming!

This past year, the seniors from the Concordia Class of 2024 secretly raised money in the final weeks of school to support a local business partner of Concordia, as their senior prank of kindness rather than one of destruction. This Concordia Senior Class “prank” is not only going down in school history but is going down nationally as one of the most inspiring,

creative, and positive senior class pranks in recent memory, as they have truly embodied what it means to live out in their faith!

PREGAME

A Letter from the Head of School Welcome Crusader Fans,

Whether you are new to the Concordia community or a longstanding community member, it is my privilege and honor to welcome and thank you for your dedication and support. Throughout our 41st year of ministry serving families in the greater Houston metro, we remain committed to cultivating a vibrant student culture that empowers students with opportunities to serve, lead, create, connect, and cultivate their God-given talents and passions within a healthy community. On campus, we strive for high standards of next level excellence, empowered support, and holistic care that permeate throughout our valued community. Most importantly, Concordia continues to faithfully pursue our mission in building lives of excellence upon the foundation of Christ. Well known for a longstanding tradition of Christ-centered excellence, Concordia Athletics,

Fine Arts, and Agriculture programs compete in the largest class of the Texas Association of Private & Parochial Schools (TAPPS) 6A division. Nearly 75% of students are engaged in the different programs, and each is afforded the opportunity to continue to experience some of the finest facilities and Christ-centered leaders across the competition. Concordia students continue to receive accolades at the local, district, regional, and state levels, and many continue to be recognized by top colleges and recruiters. Beyond college, Concordia graduates have competed at the professional level in the MLB and Olympic Games, and other professional affiliations nationally and abroad. Overall, this recognition has provided opportunities and exposure for the mission of Concordia to be advanced and to bring glory to God in all endeavors. The Lord continues to bless Concordia in great and mighty ways, and we give Him thanks and praise for each student, family, and staff member who He has called to this special ministry since 1984. As we grow together into our future, we remain united in our storied history and valued traditions in striving to faithfully equip Crusaders to impact the world for Christ. Go Saders! OVER THE COURSE OF THIS PAST FALL, CLHS ENJOYED ONE OF THE BEST CAMPAIGNS THE SCHOOL HAS SEEN IN RECENT MEMORY. After going 7-3 during the regular season, the Crusaders would proceed to defeat Nolan Catholic 57-33, which would mark the first playoff victory the team has claimed since entering TAPPS-DI. The headliners for Concordia Lutheran in 2023 included first-team, all-state honoree Lou Lamar (Dartmouth-signee), Cole Chance (Sr. RB), Luken Koehn (Jr. LB), Tanner Huckfelt (Jr. QB), and sophomore DB Dayton Navy, just to name a few. While they would ultimately fall to Parish Episcopal in the Regional round, the precedent that coach Willie Amendola and company have established will undoubtedly drive the program, moving forward.

Ownership Huckfelt the Undisputed Leader of ‘Sader Football CONCORDIA LUTHERAN’S FOOTBALL PROGRAM ENJOYED ARGUABLY THE MOST SUCCESSFUL SEASON THE PROGRAM HAS SEEN IN RECENT YEARS IN 2023, HAVING WON THEIR FIRST PLAYOFF GAME WITHIN TAPPS-I. With dual-threat, superstar Lou Lamar having since moved on to Dartmouth, it will now be up to the incoming senior class to fill in the gaps. Enter Tanner Huckfelt. “I know my role and what I need to do in that position,” he said. “The coaches have laid the groundwork for me to succeed. It’s going to be fun to fill the shoes of the people who have graduated and to help leave a legacy with our senior class.” As the Crusaders signal-caller, it is only natural that he takes on the role of a leader, which is something he’s strived for since joining the program. Consequently, the work he’s put in on the field and at camps has garnered attention from college recruiters. Most recently, Huckfelt finally got his first offer to play D1 college football, when he got the call from Butler in May. “I wasn’t even ready for it,” said Huckfelt. “I was just at my house and the quarterback coach from Butler (Eddie Schott), who I talk with all the time, told me that he and the staff were looking over my film and that they wanted to offer me. “I ran right to my Dad’s office and we started talking over everything. It was kind of surreal and it still hasn’t quite hit me yet, that I got my first offer. Knowing that I’ll have a place to play Division-I football, wherever it might be, is a great feeling. I’m just going to keep working like I have been, to prove to other schools what my team and I are capable of.” ‘Working’ is putting it lightly. Over the Summer, Huckfelt will be attending camps with some of the premier D1 college programs such as Houston, Texas State, Lamar, Iowa State, Houston Christian, SFA, Davidson, and the University of Louisiana-Lafayette, which should only improve his chances of picking up more offers. However, once the new school year begins, he will come back to Concordia Lutheran to help guide the Crusaders back to the postseason. After transferring from Magnolia West his freshman year, Huckfelt knew that he found a place to call home. “When I was thinking about enrolling, it all started when my Dad and I talked with coach (Willie) Amendola,” he said. “He explained what Concordia Lutheran was all about and what opportunities it could provide me, and from then on, my family and I were bought in. “School-wise, all the staff and students are welcoming and I’ve gone on to make new friends because of it. Regarding the football program, the coaches are with us every step of the way, but they also allow us to be a player-led group and take ownership of everything. Overall, the experience has helped me to find a family away from home.” The ‘one family’ mentality that Concordia prides itself on, certainly allowed Huckfelt to thrive. As he enters his final year with the school, it should be made perfectly clear that he will have left his mark. \\ By Matthew Ogle TAKING

IN HER FIRST YEAR BACK WITH THE PROGRAM, COACH KIM ODINGA HELPED TO RE-ESTABLISH CONCORDIA LUTHERAN AS A TITLE-CONTENDER. The Crusaders were a force to be reckoned with on the private school scene, having ended the year with a composite record of 38-13, which included a trip to the TAPPS-6A state tournament – their ninth appearance over the last ten seasons. CLHS featured a laundry list of college-commits, namely Anna Blaine (Texas State), Carmen Harless (Dallas Baptist), Rylee Henderson (West Georgia), and Carleigh Schluter (Sam Houston State). Additionally, their prolific offense was led by Haley Herndon and Kinzie Riley, who were both recognized on the state level. While there will be several key pieces graduating over the offseason, the future should still remain bright with Imerie Jones, alongside the aforementioned Herndon, Riley, and Schluter playing a bigger role next Fall.

VOLLEYBALL

Jones Locked into Court, Classroom Greatness STRIVING FOR OVER THE COURSE OF THE PAST DECADE, CONCORDIA LUTHERAN HAS GRADUALLY BECOME THE GOLD-STANDARD IN VOLLEYBALL. The program has reached the state Final Four seven times in the last nine seasons – including a championship in 2016 – which speaks for itself. Given that several of last year’s major contributors have since graduated, soon-to-be senior Imerie Jones emerges as one of the faces of the program from the middle-blocker position. “I love the team dynamic here and the necessity of perfecting your skill over time in order to succeed,” she said. “There are so many other people from different teams trying to play the same position, which ramps up the competitiveness of the sport and makes everyone better.” There have been a bevy of state-recognized volleyball stars to advance from coach Kim Odinga’s squad in years past. The names Brooke Frazier (SMU), Sophia Keene (Baylor) and Isabel Zelaya (Pepperdine) hang on the Saders at the Next Level wall. Jones is the latest to have her sights set on carrying on the tradition, after earning second-team, all-district honors a year ago. “It’s been a lot to take in at times,” said Jones. “I love playing with my teammates, and I’ve just grown within the program. I used to watch the incredible athletes who have played for this team over the years. “I’ve always looked up to them and wanted to make my own legacy – to be known as a good player and a good teammate when I do eventually leave.” Jones intends to do that and more. “Five years from now, I see myself being in pre-med,” she said. “I’ve always liked helping people, and I feel like being a doctor or nurse would bring new challenges every day for me to help others overcome. In terms of schools, I’ve really wanted to go to John Hopkins University, since they have an excellent medical program.” Joining the medical field requires a certain level of dedication and commitment to one’s craft. Fortunately for this Crusader, that particular mindset is right up her alley. “I’m constantly striving for excellence, both on and off the court,” Jones said. “At first, that mentality was brought on by my parents but now it’s more of a personal goal I set for myself. “There are times when I just don’t want to keep juggling those two priorities, but that’s where the work-ethic that has been instilled in me comes into play. I know that I have to get things done in order to compete and succeed in life.” Count on that same tenacity to come into play when Jones and company return to the court this Fall and the begin their crusade to State. \\ By Matthew Ogle

they’ve set moving forward.” While she has undoubtedly found her footing on the court, this Concordia Lutheran guard has high expectations after the collegiate level. “Initially, I thought I wanted to play in college,” said Benson. “At a certain point, I realized that I needed to turn my attention towards my studies since I hope to one day become a doctor or in the medical field.” After all, Benson has shown to be nothing if not meticulous towards her future. “If I could give my freshman-self some advice, I’d tell her to keep making those connections with the older girls that I did make,” she said. “Not only did it benefit me now, but I’m super close with all of my current and past teammates now, which has only made me a better player and person up to this point.” When she’s not binging her favorite Marvel movies or spending time with family this upcoming year, expect Kenley Benson to lead Concordia Lutheran back to the postseason in the final stretch of her exemplary high school career.

Nation’s basketball program wasn’t just made on a whim. “Since my time in middle school at Trinity Klein, I’ve always wanted to play basketball for coach (Matt) Neidigk,” Benson said. “I was a freshman on varsity, which I was super blessed to be a part of. I’ve tried to model my game after one of my favorite all time players, Paige Bueckers (UConn). “ ” “Those girls who were seniors that year – like Maddie Mueller – I looked up to them dating back to middle school, so it was really exciting to have the opportunity to play alongside them. Among the plethora of skilled performers in the group, no player was more vital to the team’s success than senior-to-be Kenley Benson. Considering her passion for the hardwood, it might come as a surprise to know that basketball wasn’t even Benson’s first sport. “I competed in just about every sport for most of my life, ranging from cheerleading to soccer and track,” she said. “Once I got into high school, I got tired of it and just went straight to basketball and I’ve grown up in the program ever since. I’ve tried to model my game after one of my favorite all-time players, Paige Bueckers (UConn).” It would seem Benson’s decision paid off, earning a first-team, all-state selection in 2024. THE CRUSADERS FACED SOME DIFFICULTIES ON THE PITCH THIS PAST WINTER, WHICH CAN BE EXPECTED WHEN COMPETING AGAINST THE FORMIDABLE TEAMS IN TAPPS-D1. Despite the challenges they faced, there were some notable performances made by Grant Pickrel, who was named to the All-State Honorable Mention team, as well as all-district mentions Jacob Marsh and David Dawod. CLHS will look to the younger talent on the squad to make a turn-around a year from now, after making an appearance in the Area Round.

THE CONCORDIA LUTHERAN GIRLS SOCCER PROGRAM EXPERIENCED SIMILAR GROWING PAINS AS THEY DID A YEAR AGO, AS THEY ARE STILL IN THE PROCESS OF A REBUILD. Regardless, they showed plenty of grit on the field in 2024, which earned them a trip to the postseason. Junior defender Madison Dodd anchored the backfield, while seniors Ella Doiron and Emerson Blevins led the Crusaders attack, which was recognized in the all-district selections. Similarly to the boys’ team, coach Kim England will look to her ascending underclassmen to take a bigger role in her second year with the program.

CONCORDIA LUTHERAN BASEBALL UPHELD ITS USUAL STANDARD OF BEING KNOWN AS ONE OF THE TOP PRIVATE SCHOOL CLUBS IN THE STATE, THIS SPRING. In his fourth year with the program, coach Royce Kennedy would help guide the Crusaders to the TAPPS-D1 state title game, which would mark their tenth consecutive appearance in the tournament. However, they were defeated 3-2 by district counterpart Central Catholic in the championship, but the decade-long precedent that Concordia Lutheran established is unlikely to be matched anytime soon. With first-team, all-state selections, Nolan Traeger (TCU) and Eoghan Collins (St. Edward’s) advancing to the collegiate stage, the torch will be passed on to the likes of Ronin McCraw, Connor Jones, and Cole Lanclos to maintain the degree of play fans have come to expect.

EYES ON THE

Jones Emboldened for Another State run in 2025

\\ By Matthew Ogle

GIVEN ALL THE TALENT INSIDE THE CONCORDIA LUTHERAN PROGRAM, IT’S NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE TO PICK OUT ANY ONE PLAYER WHO CAN BE DEFINED AS THE TEAM’S PRIMARY DIFFERENCE-MAKER. The 2024 Crusaders featured a slew of athletes who were recognized for their talents on the state level, including second team, all-state selection Connor Jones, who enjoyed a breakout season. With first-teamer Eoghan Collins departing for St. Edwards, coach Royce Kennedy will look to Jones to be the ace in 2024. “I’m definitely going to have to take on the role of a more active leader,” he said. “I do feel like I made an impact in that sense this past season, but I’ll need to step up even more now that all of last year’s seniors are leaving. “We have a really young team, so I’ll be one of the only senior starters. Because of that, I’m going to have to be the one who shows them how to get things done.” Being a pitcher can easily be the most stressful part of baseball, considering the outcome of most games tends to rely on how efficiently one can stifle the opponent’s lineup. Despite that fact, the Crusader righty remains unphased on the mound. “I like to think that I enjoy the pressure,” said Jones. “But, whenever I’m pitching, I don’t really think about it. I’ve fought for these guys the past three years, so my focus is doing anything I can to give our team the best shot at winning. “It’s not like I’m intending to strike everybody out. It’s more about getting weak contact to let my team work. I have confidence in the defense, which is all you need as a pitcher.” After narrowly falling 3-2 to Central Catholic in May’s TAPPS-I State Final, how will Jones and company prepare for next year’s campaign? “We’re definitely going to have a lot of toughness, especially since we’re having a lot more underclassmen who are moving up,” he said. “I feel like we’ll have more maturity, since the guys have been there (the State Final), and now see what it takes to get to that level. Seeing how we lost several seniors last offseason, and still made it, will instill more confidence in us to get back.” Considering the historic success of the program, paired with the level of conviction the players embody, it should be safe to say that Jones and the Crusaders will likely make their 11-straight State Tournament appearance a year from now. If all goes according to plan, next Spring will mark the program’s first title acquisition since 2015.

AFTER BEING ELIMINATED IN THE OPENING ROUND OF LAST YEAR’S POSTSEASON, CONCORDIA LUTHERAN SOUGHT TO MAKE A TURN-AROUND THIS SPRING. Mission accomplished, considering they would not only reach the playoffs, but advance to the Regional round following a dominant 10-0 victory over Nolan Catholic. Junior Faith Keiper built on her impressive performance from a year ago, which would earn her second-team, all state honors once again. She was complemented by the talents of Morgan Domino, Caly Hardy, as well as seniors Grace Cruthirds and Reese Storie Ivanovsky to accomplish this feat. Given the comparable youth that comprises their roster, there’s nowhere to go but up for CLHS.

THE MENTAL

Keiper Turning Pitching into an Art-Form

\\ By Matthew Ogle

CONCORDIA LUTHERAN’S SOFTBALL PROGRAM IS IN THE MIDST OF A REVIVAL, PRIMARILY DUE TO THE EFFORTS OF FAITH KEIPER. Softball has been a full-time gig for the incoming senior, as she competes for her club team – Texas Twelve – when she’s not donning the iconic blue-and-white. To put her talents in perspective, this past Spring season, Keiper racked up nearly 150 strikeouts on the mound. At the plate she averaged an even .500, which included 14 RBIs and two home-runs to earn herself second-team, all-state honors. Just how did she embark upon her prolific career? “I’ve always played softball, since I was eight years old,” she said. “I started because my Dad was a baseball player, and I loved joining in on the fun with him and my brother. “Since then, my strength has always been pitching. After going to a sports psychologist, I’ve gotten into a routine on the mound. I focus on the spot that I intend for the ball to go, and I block everything else out. You have to keep checking on your mental game, otherwise you’ll go insane.” The experience with sports psychology sparked an interest in pursuing that as a career path. “Ideally, I want to go to a school that places emphasis on both my academics and softball,” said Keiper. “I’m really about school and I hate missing classes. I’ll get so stressed when I have to make up work. “If I can get into a program that allows me to put my studies first while also continuing my softball career would be the perfect situation for me.” Surprisingly, Keiper’s strongest academic attribute doesn’t even come in the traditional sense. “I don’t know if you would count this, but my favorite subject is art class,” she said. “I’m in Art IV-AP right now. I love to paint, typically depicting scenes in nature such as landscapes. It’s always been a passion of mine.” But, back to softball. The Crusaders are coming off an impressive campaign, which saw them reach the TAPPS-D1 Regional Round, following their 10-0 thrashing over Nolan Catholic. While they will be under new leadership in 2025, the presence of Concordia Lutheran’s star pitcher is unlikely to falter. “My goal this season is to be a good teammate and perform the best that I can as a role model,” Keiper said. “Statistically speaking, I hope to pass the 200-strikeout mark and help to lead this team back to the playoffs. I also want to keep up my batting average, while I’m at it.” Next Spring will mark Keiper’s final stretch of her high school career. Hopefully, all signs should point to it being her masterpiece.

SPRING WRAP LACROSSE LACROSSE ‘Sader Nation LAX has a Banner Year

\\ By Matthew Ogle

THERE ARE FEW TEAMS WITHIN CRUSADERS ATHLETICS THAT EXPERIENCED A MORE METEORIC RISE THAN THAT OF LACROSSE. After going 13-58 through the seven years since its inception, Concordia Lutheran LAX proceeded to go 13-5 this Spring, under the direction of John Toukatly. Furthermore, the Crusaders – led by Quintin Dyer, Hudson Huempfner, and Christian Johnson – won the City Tournament for the first time ever, prior to being named the THSLL State Runner-Up. Subsequently, Dyer, Huempfner, and Johnson would each be named to the All Tournament team, as they succeeded in their mission of breathing new life into the growing CLHS program.

It’s not necessarily a hobby, it’s just something that needs to be looked after.” His unique social-life aside, Dyer hopes to further his education at Texas A&M after the upcoming year, where he intends to major in Business to become a financial manager, while also minoring in psychology. The incoming senior enrolled at Concordia Lutheran rather than attending Tomball High, which was a decision he still values to this day. “Each year has brought different experiences for me,” Dyer said. “Obviously, junior year is the hardest year, and you expect that, but the experience at this school has been kind of eye-opening and has helped me to grow as a person.” Dyer may be smaller in stature, but that won’t stop him from executing his vision without a hint of fear. After all, anyone who’s willing to handle highly-dangerous reptiles on a regular basis has to be some kind of courageous, right?

practice that it takes for us to succeed.” For his efforts in attack, Dyer was named to the All-Tournament team. Shockingly, he is among the previously mentioned players who only just recently picked up a stick. “Something I love about this sport is that you don’t need size to compete,” Dyer said. “I grew up playing football, but it gets harder to excel in high school when you’re not that big. “Some of the best players on our lacrosse team don’t even play football, and they’re smaller than I am. But when you have that drive to win like we do, only good can come from it.” The dual-sport athlete is equally as intriguing off the field. “I’m a very active person,” he said. “Other than hanging out with friends, I’m always doing something, whether it’s working out, riding my motorcycle or doing chores for my family. “We’ve got a lot of animals that need to be taken care of – mainly reptiles such as some venomous snakes like cobras and vipers, as well as a caiman

CONCORDIA LUTHERAN LACROSSE WILL ENTER THE 2024-25 SEASON ON THE HEELS OF THEIR GREATEST SEASON TO DATE. Since its establishment in 2017, ‘Sader lacrosse experienced varying degrees of success. That all changed this past Spring, when they not only claimed the program’s first-ever city championship but proceeded to finish as the Texas High School Lacrosse League (THSLL) State Runner-Up. One of the key figures in sparking this revival was Quintin Dyer, all-time leader in goals and points for Concordia who finished with 67 goals in 2024. “This year, we’ve done things that haven’t really been done before,” he said. “We’re coming off wins against opponents that we’ve lost to in recent seasons, and it’s really helped to build up our confidence. “I think what’s different about this team is that we’re bringing in more people who have experience in the game. Before, most of the players were just starting to really play their freshman year. But now, everyone knows the
