CLHS NEWS
SPIRITUAL LIFE
At Concordia, it’s all about Jesus!
What sets Concordia apart from many schools is that we can process ALL OF LIFE through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. The staff at CLHS work hard to create a safe environment for everyone. Students who believe are able to deepen their love for Jesus and love those who don’t believe, while students who are still asking questions about faith are able to explore Jesus in theology class and respect their peers as they practice their faith each day. All students take a theology class during each of their years at Concordia. Chapel takes please each week and is led by the Worship Arts class students and teacher. Concordia is excited to offer Family Groups every week where each student is assigned a small group led by a faculty/staff member. This allows every student to be known and have a trusted adult on campus they can look to for support and leadership. Family Groups partner together for time in the Word, playing games, and prayer.
Global Embrace Missions
Our Global Embrace also extends to Costa Rica. CLHS has been building homes there since 2012 and several students just returned from a build in March 2023. Homes are able to be built due to the fundraising efforts of the Concordia community every Homecoming week. Over the last few years, over $25,000 has been raised by the students to help build homes for families in need, truly making Homecoming a HOMEcoming!
Concordia’s Global Embrace starts right here in Tomball and the greater Houston area with our Christian Social Action class. Over 300 former and current students have served in the community, where they volunteer at several different service sites in the Tomball area. Every year, some of those students continue to partner with the service organizations after the class ends as well.

also be able understand the great amount of commitment and personal investment our coaches, teachers, staff, athletes and students put into the process of making all of these successes happen. Here at Concordia, we are proud members of the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools (TAPPS) and compete at the highest level of TAPPS in the 6A division. In total, the Concordia Athletic Department fields 20 different athletic programs throughout the school year. In all, we have to be fully committed in order to make it possible for all of these goals to be met. Concordia Lutheran is a name synonymous with success. This year was no different as that football team had more “juice” under the direction of new coach Willie Amendola. The volleyball team advanced to the Regional Round, while the cross-country programs were led by a pair of sophomores. The future looks bright in the land of the Crusaders.

UNDER THE DIRECTION OF NEW COACH WILLIE AMENDOLA, THE CRUSADERS MADE SOME TREMENDOUS STRIDES AS A PROGRAM IN 2022. Concordia Lutheran went 5-5 during the regular season, while remaining competitive in a tough district that featured the likes of Antonian Prep, St. Thomas Catholic and St. Pius X. The Crusaders reached the postseason, but was cut short after being defeated by Nolan Catholic in the TAPPS Area Round. Offensively, the Crusaders had some bright spots that included Ryan Escalante, Andrew Blades and young up and-comer Tanner Huckfelt at quarterback. Meanwhile, senior lineman Gianluca Decillo, Lou Lamar and Luken Koehn anchored the defense. Given the overall youth of the team, it’s understandable that there would be some kinks that need to be worked out. Rest assured, Amendola will be on the case in year two of directing the Concordia Lutheran program.

Directed by coaches Michelle Luevano (Girls) and Eric Oblinger (Boys), ‘Sader Nation cross country was exceptional in the regular season and beyond – as both teams qualified for the TAPPS State Championship. We’re working hard and hopefully we can show that on the field next year.” What’s something not everyone may know about the eventual Concordia Lutheran senior? “I’m a bit of an introvert,” Lamar said. “I love being with my friends but I also need my alone time. There’s no place I’d rather be than chilling by myself, working out, playing music and watching movies. I’m a big movie guy, particularly the war genre or Tarantino-type stuff. My favorite has to be either Inglourious Basterds or Django Unchained.” An excellent taste in films, no doubt. Expect Lamar to carry that love for action onto the field, as he and the Crusaders compete for a district title and more in 2023.
the guy next to us and we’re playing to win.” Although he’s a mainstay in the Crusaders' secondary, Lamar has shown that he can be effective in the gaps when he cheats to the line. Not only that, but in the upcoming Fall season, expect him to make an impact on the offensive side of the ball now that he is listed as a running back as well. This must be something that Henderson State University saw, considering they recently gave Lamar his first offer to play college football – no doubt, the first of many. “I’m really thankful for the Henderson State coaches, and thankful to God for giving me this opportunity,” he said. “But, I’m just looking at it as motivation to grow even more and help the guys around me to do

Junior Lou Lamar is coming off a stellar season in which he earned an all-state honorable mention for his efforts on the Concordia Lutheran defensive line. His distinct adaptability makes him one of coach Willie Amendola’s most valuable assets on the turf. “My best quality as a player is my versatility,” said Lamar. “I love football, and I love to play any position on the field. I’ll be happy just playing special teams if that’s where they need me. Right now, I’m playing a few different positions and I’m happy to do it. the 411 FALL FEATURE ‘Sader Nation’s Shirley is a Jack-of-All-Trades CARA SHIRLEY HAS BEEN EXCEPTIONAL FOR CONCORDIA LUTHERAN CROSS COUNTRY, DESPITE HER YOUNG AGE.
Most recently, she was the top Crusader finisher at the TAPPS State Meet in Waco. Among the 80 competitors at the two-mile race, Shirley finished in the No. 15 spot with a time of 13:23. Given that she’s just getting started, there’s no telling how much she will improve in the coming season. VYPE got the chance to catch up with the soon-to-be junior Crusader … VYPE: Why did you get into cross country, and what do you love about it? SHIRLEY: Well, my Dad started running when I was little, and I would run with him. So, that kind of led me to stay with cross country for the team-aspect. It also made us closer. VYPE: So, talk about your sophomore year. Were you surprised? What were your expectations? SHIRLEY: Oh, I was super surprised that I came in as a sophomore and won gold in my first meet. I was just blown out of the water. I had no clue that I was capable of that. VYPE: I’m fascinated with what cross country people think about when they’re running. What do you think about? Do you listen to anything before going onto the track? SHIRLEY: Before I go onto the track, I recite the Lightning McQueen mantra–’the faster the fast, the quicker the quick.’ When I’m running, there’s an 80s pop song playing in my head at all times. VYPE: Cross country is great, but what do you do outside of running? SHIRLEY: I do art. I competed in the TAPPS State Art competition SHIRLEY: My older sister did Art. So, I grew up drawing with her and she taught me a lot. I’ll draw anything, but the specific category I won in … I just drew a picture that I saw on the campus. VYPE: What is your Netflix jam? SHIRLEY: Stranger Things VYPE: If you had a celebrity dream-date, who would that be? SHIRLEY: Harry Styles VYPE: What has Concordia Lutheran meant to you, so far? SHIRLEY: It’s been like my second family. Coming here and being able to see all these people that I’ve known since I was a little kid – it feels so safe. VYPE: Finally, what are you going to do to get better for next year? SHIRLEY: I’m going to train as hard as I possibly can this summer. That way, I can come back next year and succeed more than I did as a sophomore. and got first place in my category. VYPE: How did you get into that?

THE CRUSADERS EXPERIENCED ANOTHER PROFITABLE WINTER ON THE COURT, MAINTAINING A WINNING RECORD OF 18-16 AGAINST SOME TOUGH DISTRICT COMPETITION. This Concordia Lutheran girls hoops program extended their streak of playoff appearances to 25, advancing to the Area Round of the TAPPS postseason. However, most notable was the list of accolades the team earned at the conclusion of the Winter season. Leading CLHS was second-team, all-state selection Kayley Brennan, who finalized her high school career in style. With coach Brian Zimont alongside junior Adele Neuhaus and a solid nucleus returning next year, ‘Sader Nation will be aiming for a resurgence.
RECREATING CONCORDIA LUTHERAN’S 2021-22 SEASON, WHICH SAW THE CRUSADERS BREEZE TO AN UNDEFEATED (10-0) DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIP EN ROUTE TO A TAPPS FINAL FOUR APPEARANCE, IS EASIER SAID THAN DONE. Regardless, ‘Sader Nation enjoyed an impressive Winter under the direction of coach Bill Honeck, going 21-11 with an Area Round appearance. Concordia hoops was headlined by senior SG/SF Jesse Fuller, who earned first-team, all-state and all-district selections for his dominance on the court. With several key pieces returning next Winter, including breakout sophomore guard Howie Keene and junior Jace Jeffries, expect ‘Sader Nation be back in the State conversation.

DESPITE FACING A FEW SETBACKS THROUGHOUT THE SEASON, THE CRUSADERS MANAGED TO SHOW SOME RESILIENCY ON THE PITCH, ESPECIALLY IN THE TAPPS-DI POSTSEASON. CLHS advanced to the Area Round, where they narrowly fell to Nolan Catholic by a score of 3-2. However, the boys should remain optimistic considering this season had some bright spots. Particularly, their anchor of the backline senior Caleb Symons and senior forward/midfielder Evan Kastenschmidt, who left a solid legacy at Concordia Lutheran. The return of sophomore midfielder Trent Culver, along with the team’s further experience should provide the push that Concordia Lutheran needs to take their game to the next level in 2023.
CLHS GIRLS SOCCER WAS IN REBUILDING-MODE IN 2023 AFTER LOSING NINE SENIORS TO GRADUATION LAST SEASON. THE CRUSADERS FOUGHT THROUGH A TOUGH DISTRICT (9-9 OVERALL; 5-7 IN DISTRICT) TO ADVANCE TO THE TAPPS POSTSEASON. Leading the way was senior captain Katelyn Denley, who capped off her final season at Concordia with second-team, all-state and first-team, all-district nods for her leadership on the pitch. In addition, senior forward Allesandra Dewenter was particularly efficient in her goal-scoring ability. In 2023, she combined for 26 goals and 12 assists with sophomore Gretchen Kastenschmidt, who will look to lead the CLHS attack next season.

No Day s Of f
Jeffries Dedicates Himself to the Game
\\ By Matthew Ogle
“I always try to give back to the youth,” he said. “It’s always been a big part of my life, because when I was a kid I looked up to people. They look at a kid who’s teaching them the drills three times a week and I think that makes them appreciate it more. So, now I want these kids who look up to me to succeed.” Given his palpable dedication to the game, it’s not hard to see why he’s become a standout in Concordia Lutheran hoops. “I think my hard work and motivation helps to set me apart,” Jeffries said. “Getting up in the morning, not just for basketball – it might be for the classroom or something else. I’m always trying to better myself in my work ethic, without cutting any corners.” It’s only a matter of time before that translates onto the hardwood in a major way.
WHAT AN ADDITION JACE JEFFRIES WAS THIS SEASON TO THE CONCORDIA LUTHERAN HOOP TROUPE ON AND OFF THE COURT. The St. Thomas-transfer fit right in with teammates Jesse Fuller and Howie Keene to lead to an undefeated district season and an Area Round appearance. The junior looks forward to playing an even bigger role in 2023-24. “Of course, it’s going to be a big responsibility for me,” said Jeffries. “We had a pretty good season, but we know there’s more work to be done. We have a good group of guys, and I feel like as a senior I need to lead them into a winning position. So, we know our purpose in what we do, and we’ll go hard every day.” In addition to dishing assists on the court, Jeffries spends his free time assisting the community by helping to train the younger generation of ball players at Alodia Basketball Academy.

A nother O n e Tilley has Tremendous Start to Bright Future CONCORDIA LUTHERAN SWIMMING AND DIVING IS HOME TO A GENERATIONAL TALENT, IN MORE WAYS THAN ONE. Freshman Katherine Tilley – the younger sister of ‘Sader Nation legend Erin Tilley – is becoming a star in her own right. Given her family background, she was almost born to be a swimmer. “It’s a funny story, actually,” said Tilley. “Years ago, my Mom had this nightmare that my sister [Erin] was in the pool and she was drowning, which eventually led to her putting Erin into swimming. Growing up with my sister, I thought, ‘I could do that!’ So, when I was five, I first got into the water.” What did Tilley end up doing her first year on the Crusaders’ swim team? Nothing much. She only became a TAPPS State Champion. “I felt like I was going to do well because I was going to give it my all,” Tilley said. “But, I was genuinely very surprised, going to the meets in the postseason and just continuing on to win at State.” Tilley concluded the 2022 TAPPS State competition with two gold medals – the 50-yard and 100-yard Freestyle, leading her team to a sixth-place finish at TAPPS State with 118 points. Tilley has hefty plans for her future. “I definitely want to swim in college,” she said. “My sister currently does at Incarnate Word, and I want to possibly go to a big school one day. The end-goal is to maybe make it big-time – the Olympic trials.” In addition to the exorbitant amount of time she devotes to swimming, the soon to-be CLHS sophomore spends time in the school’s Art program, with the intention of joining Choir. You’ll see plenty of Katherine Tilley around campus, but this star will be shining brightest when she’s working at her family business … the pool.

S tar s SPRING The Spring season had so many highlights from baseball being state-ranked to several tennis players reaching the
State Tourney. How about both golf teams reaching the State Tournament, led by Abby Plagens and Caleb Blackburn? Ryley Klefstead carried the track team, winning gold in the pole vault before heading of the Texas A&M.

CONCORDIA LUTHERAN DOMINATED ON THE DIAMOND THIS SPRING. WHAT ELSE IS NEW? A year after reaching the TAPPS State Semis, Concordia Lutheran proceeded to go on an absolute tear in the 2023 regular season, finishing with a 31-2 record and the district title (11-1). Under the direction of third-year coach Royce Kennedy, CLHS had an arsenal of playmakers in Alex Petrovic, Eoghan Collins, Cole Lanclos, Ronin McCraw, Nolan Traeger, Michael Herndon and more, who brought the team back to the State Tourney for the ninth-consecutive season. Unfortunately for the Crusaders, they narrowly fell to Trinity Christian in a 4-3 nail biter, just one game shy of the championship. Despite that, don’t expect the team to slow down in the slightest a year from now. The State Tournament is the standard, and with all the talent coming back in 2024, count on Concordia Lutheran to make another run to reclaim their 2015 championship status.

That doesn’t mean the Spring was without its bright spots for the Crusaders. CLHS did feature some impressive performances from their top players – namely, sophomore pitcher Faith Keiper, Karalyn Rich, Caly Hardy and Storie Ivanovsky – which should indicate that the young dugout should be on the upswing headed into next season. \\ By Matthew Ogle

feature SPRING track + fiel d tenni s \\ By Matthew Ogle \\ By Matthew Ogle CONCORDIA LUTHERAN TRACK AND FIELD HAS BEEN KNOWN TO BE ONE OF THE PREMIER GROUPS IN TAPPS-DI IN RECENT MEMORY. This Spring was no different. Led by coaches Bobby Lindquist (boys) and Jacob Vasquez (girls), ‘Sader Nation was a force to be reckoned with throughout the 2023 regular season. Of course, this translated to an even greater showing in the later meets as CLHS had over a dozen athletes qualify for the TAPPS State Meet. When all was said and done at Midway ISD’s Panther Stadium, Concordia Lutheran procured some top finishes. Most notably, senior Ryley Klefstead took gold in the pole vault (14-0), while the boys relay team finished second overall in the 4x400 (1:30.16). Adele Neuhaus (triple jump: 36-10.75) and Sara Ostermiller (discus: 108-3) carried the girls’ banner at State.
CLHS WAS PRODUCTIVE ON THE TENNIS COURT THIS SPRING. After enjoying several standout performances in tournaments against some top-tier competition, coach Mike Schatz had the pleasure of taking a good portion of his team to the TAPPS State Tournament in Waco. Seniors Cecilia Dailey, Chase Cook, Gavin Borne, Josh Henson, Jack Sherman and sophomore Ryan Bell, each qualified to compete in the season finale after performing well at Regionals. However, given the quality of opposition they faced, only the boys doubles team of Chase Cook and Gavin Borne advanced further than the opening round of eliminations at State – with the pair making it all the way to the Final Four. The bar has been set for the future.

BOTH THE GIRLS’ AND BOYS’ ADVANCED TO THE TAPPS STATE TOURNAMENT IN 2023. Directed by coaches Bill Honeck (boys) and Cari Raymond (girls), Concordia Lutheran traveled to Cottonwood Creek Golf Course in Waco with the hopes of walking off the green with some medals on their necks. Even though it didn’t play out that way, both groups put up some impressive numbers, with the girls finishing in the No. 6 spot (overall score of 758) and the boys ending up seventh overall (661). Individually, CLHS’ top girls finisher was senior Abby Plagens, who shot 177 to place 19th, while senior Caleb Blackburn led the boys with a score of 157 (15th overall).

much to her. “I think that Concordia Lutheran is a lot about community,” Neuhaus said. “All of the teachers and coaches really care about who you are outside of your sport. I’ll have coaches and teachers checking up on me outside of school, which is great to see as a student.” Given all the time she spends in her respective “fields of play” and the classroom, what does Neuhaus do when she has a second to spare? “I do live on a farm with some goats and chickens, so I like to go hang out with my baby goats,” she laughed. If she keeps up her fantastic leadership qualities and athleticism, she could be considered one of the Crusaders’ all-time GOATs (greatest of all time) by the end of her career.
“I would say track helps me a lot with basketball … with the speed, endurance and agility. Basketball can help me with track because it’s more of a team sport and I can bring that team-aspect to the track.” All of the teachers and coaches really care about who you are outside of your sport. “ ” It’s easy to see that family means a great deal to Neuhaus, which is exactly what makes CLHS appeal so
ADELE NEUHAUS IS “THAT” GIRL. The two-sport athlete is a headliner on the track and field and basketball teams. In the Fall, Neuhaus led the Crusaders on the hardwood earning a first-team, all-district nod as a junior. She is following in the footsteps of her older sister Jane Neuhaus, who was a star for the Crusaders and now plays at Concordia University-Nebraska. “I think coming into my freshman year with my sister being here, made a big difference,” said Neuhaus. “I was able to connect with the upperclassmen more because my sister was already friends with so many of them. It made it so much easier to come into the sport [basketball] with more confidence.” In the Spring, Neuhaus flourished in the triple jump earning bronze at the TAPPS State Track Meet (Triple Jump). “Both sports complement each other in different ways,” she said.

\\ By Matthew Ogle S til l Traeger is Anchor for Crusader Baseball Program COOKING WHAT DEFINES NOLAN TRAEGER? Aside from priding himself on being a beef filet-aficionado on the grill, the soon-to-be Concordia Lutheran senior thrives as a competitor on and off the baseball field. As one of the preeminent catchers in the state, Traeger has elevated an already well-established Crusaders’ program, and will continue to do so when he takes an undisputed leadership position in the dugout a year from now. “Being a leader means holding everyone accountable, especially myself,” said Traeger. “For some people, you need to show them how to do it … how to compete in this program. I want to be someone who sets an example.” Traeger has been no stranger to college offers, given the talent and presence he brings to the diamond. But, when he got word from TCU that he could play alongside his brother, Jax, accepting the offer was a no-brainer. “I’ll be there [TCU] with my brother for at least one year, which impacted my decision a little bit,” Traeger said. “I loved being around the coaching staff. They treated me like they wanted me there, and Fort Worth is just an amazing place. The thought of being able to play with Jax one more time is Tournament once again in 2023, Traeger will be suiting up one last time for Concordia Lutheran this Spring with the highest of expectations. “It’s the culture of the people that have been here,” he said. “Our team is really coming together. We have one goal, and everyone needs to step up and do their job so we can achieve it. That’s all it really comes down to, holding each other accountable on the field.” Stay tuned for the grand finale of Traeger’s high school career. pretty sweet. No downside to it.” After reaching the TAPPS State
