ALDINE ISD MAKES POSITIVE GAINS IN STUDENTACHIEVEMENT
Comparison to State Data • Elementary campuses outgrew the state in “% Meets” from spring 2021 in reading and math at all grade lev els. • Middle School Matters: Eighth-grade performance on STAAR in reading, math, science, and social studies outgrew the state from spring 2021 in “% Meets.” • High school campuses outgrew the state from last year in “% Meets” for Algebra I, Biology, US History, and English II. • The kindergarten growth in reading outperformed the national average on our universal screeners this year. More Good News • ACE Schools continue to demonstrate what is possible. They are in the Top 5 highest performing elementary schools in the district. • The district’s two most recently opened Choice Schools — Young Women’s Leadership Academy and La Promesa — are performing well, earning an A and B, respectively. • 13/14 schools received a “Bold” school action through the Office of Transformation — grew at least one letter grade • Thirty-three (33) of Aldine campus es are A and B campuses, which is almost double what we had in 2019, the last time AISD had ratings. “The bottom line is that we have made progress and realize that although there is still lots of work to be done, we have so much to celebrate. We are incredibly proud of the work of all of our teachers and students. And while there is still work to be done to fully recover from the academic effects of COVID-19, we are pleased to have made progress and will celebrate those wins as we continue to see improvement. We look forward to making further strides while providing our students with choices and opportunities,” said Superintendent La Tonya M. Goffney. high-quality instructional practices in helping students make gains in their academic recovery from COVID-19. STAAR results give teachers and fam ilies a clear picture of where students are performing to receive the support they need. STAAR is one of many ways to measure student learning – it isn’t meant to tell the whole story. Measures like personal observations, teacher feedback, and grades give families and teachers a complete picture of students’ academic progress. Aldine ISD According to Dawn Ayers, Chief of Ac countability, Assessment, and Analytics, “all good things take time. As can be expected, AISD has more work to do … but the district has also made some real progress.” Aldine ISD students improved on all tests at all grade levels. The largest gains were in elementary reading, with several campuses improving their “% Meets Grade Level” performance from spring 2019 (pre-pandemic). There was growth in all subject ar eas from 2021: Reading had the most growth and has almost recovered to pre-COVID levels. Students in fourth grade in Spring 2021 showed the most growth in 2022 on their 5th grade reading tests (24.2% growth).
For the first time since 2019, the Texas Education Agency released account ability ratings for districts and cam puses across the state. Grades 3-8 and end-of-course (EOC) tests show gains in many grades and subjects from the previous year. It’s the first rating to be issued following two years of pandemic-related pauses. State Spring 2022 State of Texas Assess ments of Academic Readiness (STA AR®) results showed improvements since COVID-19, with solid gains for reading language arts. STAAR results for Grades 3-8, including mathematics and reading exams for grades 3–8, 5th and 8th-grade science, and 8th-grade social studies, showed across-the-board improvements in all grades and subjects from 2021, with significant gains in reading. STAAR EOC results showed progress in the three tests that saw a decline during COVID-19. In these three tests, Algebra I, Biology, and U.S. History, Tex as student performance in the “meets grade level” category improved. The re sults stayed largely consistent from last school year in the two tests that did not show a negative impact from COVID-19, English 1 and English 2. After two years of pandemic-related disruptions, this year’s STAAR re sults are more important than ever and reflect teachers’ investment and
