PREPARE YOUR FARM A few years back, floods hit the Midwest and destroyed homes and thousands of acres of farmland throughout the region. Many farmers lost everything. Flood season starts in spring and can run into fall, so adequate preparation is crucial in protecting your land, livestock, home and family. CHECK YOUR INSURANCE. FOR F LOOD I NG by Angela Smith
PREPARE HOUSEHOLD ITEMS. Put your appliances on platforms to reduce potential damage. Store important, smaller items in floatable waterproof containers to keep everything dry. CREATE AN EVACUATION PLAN. Have an emergency plan in place for you, your family and farm workers. Determine an evacuation route and gather important numbers. Assign duties to specific people to speed the process and reduce stress. In addition, United Country Real Estate has experts across the country who can help you find prime farmland that will set you up for success. Visit UCFarmland.com to learn more.
Many insurance policies don’t cover floods. Get one that does, especially if you live in a flood plain. PLAN FOR YOUR LIVESTOCK’S SAFETY. If you can’t move your livestock to higher ground, form a plan to help the animals survive. Before you evacuate, open your gates to allow livestock to migrate. Leave fresh water and food somewhere easily accessible. KEEP EXTRA SUPPLIES ON HAND. Keep hand tools, rope, fire extinguishers and generators on hand for uncontrollable circumstances such as power loss, fires and items drifting away in the water.
