Truckin' on the Western Branch

Charlotte Fletcher was a cheerleader as was Anita Forbes Martin, who graduated from Churchland in 1962. Anita Martin grew up in Sterling Point and remembered, We wore long skirts and heavy knit sweaters for cheering. It was a time when ladies always wore skirts, gloves, and hats, and their shoes and pocketbooks always matched. Mr. Quick was part of our high school activities. We all met at Mr. Quick’s. His puffs were delicious. We used to walk across the Churchland Bridge to the Waterview Pharmacy. The bridge was flat then; the new one was built later. And all the daffodils the farmers grew were beautiful—they were everywhere.

I got engaged to Buddy on March 3 of my senior year and graduated with an engagement ring. A lot of my classmates went on to Vietnam.

A portion of the Martin property has been designated as a nature conservation area, protecting the land and the animals on it.
