The First Hundred Years: Clearwater Yacht Club, 1911-2011

Chapter 8 “Down To the Seas:” History of Cruising at CYC

At CYC, members have been drawn “down to the seas again” for many, many years. While much of the history of CYC is tied to competitive sail and power boat racing, pleasure cruising has also played a very important role in the life of the club since the early days. A newspaper article from 1947 notes that: “A group of power boat owners and members of the Clearwater Yacht Club met last night at the beach clubhouse and formed an organization to be known as The Captain’s Club, a subsidiary of the Yacht Club . ” This new group immediately took on two projects of benefit to cruising boaters and to the community as a whole. “One of the first tasks facing the new organization will be the re-marking of channels in Clearwater harbor. This situation has been a sore spot with boatmen for some time….The first act of the newly formed club was the 100% endorsement of the water festival celebration, the idea of which was presented to them by the committee from the Junior Chamber of Commerce and the Senior Chamber of Commerce.” 83
