St. Paul. Public housing “Designated as Senior Only” is for tenants 62+. Minneapolis. For public housing in Minneapolis, you must be 50+ and apply at 1001 Washington Ave. N., Minneapolis. Th ere is a pre application process and wait list that is updated monthly. Applicants 62+ receive priority and the wait list never closes. Younger, disabled people will be considered in these properties. Eligibility Th ere are criteria for eligibility for subsidized housing. Income requirements are set by the Dept. of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and revised annually. Most buildings are designated as Low Income (LI), Very Low Income (VLI), or Extremely Low Income (XLI). Contact HUD for this year’s income limits. Most of the listed
buildings require applicants to be 62+, handicapped, or disabled. Some buildings are included in this grid because older adults make up most of the residents. Check with each building for entrance age. Waiting lists Most of the buildings have waiting lists and you must plan ahead and contact buildings of your choice, or the housing authority, to get on the list. You can be on several lists at once. Applicants are screened and information is veri fi ed. Being on a list does not guarantee placement if you do not pass the screening. Section8 Th is U.S. program authorizes payment of rental housing assistance to private landlords on behalf of low-income households. With this rental assistance, tenants select housing of their choice.
S ubsidized housing o ff ers a ff ordable rents to income-quali fi ed older adults and handicapped and disabled persons. Financial assistance is available through several federal programs. In many cases, residents pay 30 percent of their income for rent. In some buildings a schedule is used; these rents are lower than non subsidized rents in that same building . Affordable Housing
Under Section 42, apartments will only be rented to those making less than 60 percent of the area median income, adjusted for family size. Prospective tenant incomes are veri fi ed before move-in to ensure program guidelines are met. Call your Housing and Redevelop ment Authorities (cities and counties below) to learn if you qualify.
Section 42 Affordable Housing TaxCredit Th is is a federal program governed by the Internal Revenue Service. Di ff erent from Section 8, Section 42 means that residents are responsible for paying 100 percent of their rent, set at a level de fi ned as “a ff ordable.”
