Long-time Freeman volunteer Mr. Dudley Anthony recently passed away. Dudley was with Freeman for almost 11 years and spent many hours making the rounds with Ms. Dot, bringing comfort and a smile to so many of the staff, visitors and patients.

The Healing Power of Pets Submitted by Freeman Health System

T hose of us who own pets know they can make us happy by loving us unconditionally. Those who have crossed paths with therapy pets have also experienced the joy and compassion of an animal’s comfort. Whether it’s an elderly woman living with Alzheimer’s, enjoying the warmth of a purring cat’s fur, or a young boy recovering from an operation, eager to receive a lick from a loving dog, animals bring smiles to the faces of adults and children alike, helping them feel relaxed and reassured. Thanks to this natural relationship, pet therapy can aid in progress toward goals in human physical, social, emotional and cognitive function. Pet therapy, also called animal-assisted therapy, is a guided interaction between an individual and a trained animal. It also involves the animal’s handler.

Pet handlers and their animals who visit Freeman Health System are Freeman volunteers. These amazing animals brighten the days of patients, staff and visitors, who often greet the animals with smiles, open arms and sometimes a treat. Often, the exercise and socialization are beneficial to the pets and to those they visit. Veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder, students with literacy challenges and those approaching end of life can experience the healing touch of pet therapy. Interactions with animals have been shown to decrease the perception of pain, lower blood pressure, promote care compliance and minimize anxiety.
