Screwpiles: The Forgotten Lighthouses

1916 Chesapeake Bay Chart at the height of the Steamboat Era Published by the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey Chart from the Library of Congress Lighthouses were governed by the U.S. Lighthouse Service and became part of the U.S. Coast Guard in 1939. The chart shows all of the major aids to navigation in yellow, including buoys, post lanterns, and major and minor lights.

Red lines mark the channel boundaries.

Shoals are shaded light blue.

Water depth is in feet.

Steamboat landings are labeled.
