BOOK REVIEW
R eflecting on my teaching career, I’ve realized that most behavior systems are great in serving students who require little to no intervention but often fall short for those who need the most support. It took me far too long to grasp this truth, which is why I wish I had been able to read “Better Than Carrots or Sticks: Restorative Practices for Positive Classroom Management” earlier in my career. This book would have enriched my ability to provide effective support to my students. Consider the historical account of the 19th century Cholera outbreak in London. Amidst the chaos and after hundreds of lives were lost, physician John Snow shifted his focus from conventional treatment to uncovering the root cause: contaminated water. By addressing this underlying issue, he single handedly stopped the epidemic’s spread. Similarly, as educators, we must shift our focus from the behaviors happening in front of us and delve into their origins. Easier said than done, right? Not anymore - this book equips you with the tools to do just that. One of the book’s strengths lies in its emphasis on understanding the root causes of misbehavior and addressing them proactively. By acknowledging students’ individual needs and providing appropriate support, teachers can help them develop self regulation skills and make positive choices. Self regulation skills are critically important to develop as they are a leading indicator to future success,
while helping to ensure more effective classroom management practices in the present. “Better Than Carrots or Sticks” provides a comprehensive framework for implementing restorative practices, including proactive strategies for prevention, collaborative problem-solving approaches for addressing conflicts, and reflective processes for repairing harm. This helps provide a system of support for the student, while ensuring accountability. By prioritizing the development of self-regulation skills and addressing the root causes of misbehavior, teachers not only foster a positive learning environment but also lay the foundation for long-term success and well-being for their students. I urge you to read this book and to consider joining our Extended Beyond the Book Club. This is the featured book for the March/April program. In this collaborative space, educators will be able to share experiences, brainstorm ideas and support one another in implementing the principles outlined in the book. It’s an opportunity to expand your professional network, engage in enriching discussions and collectively explore new possibilities for creating positive change in our schools.
