School and Community Fall 2023
MY “WHY” IS _______________
Teaching is both a rewarding and demanding journey. Missouri teachers know this well. We asked members, “What is your WHY? What gets you excited to step into your classroom each day?” Read some of our favorite answers and then write your own “Why” in the blank above.
“My ‘why’ is all of the kiddos in my school and my district. They deserve the best education, a safe environment and a place they look forward to coming to every day. No matter the climate of the surrounding community, these kids deserve my all. Every day.” -Rachael S. “My ‘why’ is to give the kids in my district a consistent face and voice. So many times, small districts are [viewed as] a stepping stone for teachers and not a place to put roots down. I’m excited for year three as a coach and teacher. Champions are built, not born.” “My ‘why’ is to make a difference and create memories for the students. I’m excited each day to have the opportunity to love our students well. After they feel safe, we work on math standards.” -Dagny O. “My ‘why’ is the children. Some are never shown love or compassion at home. I seek to build relationships first and then teach reading. Rita Pierson taught us kids learn more from teachers they like!” -Shannon P. -Chad G.
“I am teaching after retirement, and I teach Credit Recovery. It is not a job; it is my mission field! It is sooooooo important that our high school kids graduate, and I get the privilege of helping them to meet that ultimate goal! I LOVE MY ‘WHY!’” -Tami P. “My ‘why’ is giving my students the assurance that they are safe within the walls of my room. Students need this assurance more than anything in today’s society.” -Valerie P. “Connecting people with stories and information that move them forward with excitement, curiosity and joy!” -Tisha C.
“My ‘why’ is that moment you connect with a student who needed a little bit more and they finally rise to the occasion.” -Janice D. “I get excited every day that I go to work, knowing that I can share my love of reading with students! I’ve always wanted to just be in an area of education where I could make a difference when it comes to reading. My big ‘why’ every day is getting those kids (no matter who walks through my door) to love reading at their level!” -Michelle D.
