School and Community Fall 2022

Josh Cullen is an art teacher in the Macks Creek R-V district who enjoys creating through a variety of mediums. His art is often displayed on his instagram page @heythisguydoesart. While he has created art for the majority of his life, this is Cullen’s 17th year in art education. "At one point in my life, I said that art saved my life,” he said. “I stand by this. I absolutely believe that art has a way of grounding us, connecting us and giving us something to look forward to. We all have the ability to create new worlds in our hands. This power should be given to everyone, regardless of who they are or where they come from.” Cullen finds inspiration in the fact that students can view his classroom as a safe space to create. “I have had students tell me that’s the only reason they came to school that day,” he explained. As an educator and an artist, Cullen strives to connect others with the tools they need to express themselves in all environments. He plans to open a studio and education space one day with a free art supply closet for his community. Pictured is one of Cullen’s art pieces titled “Magick.”

M any MSTA members are great at thinking outside the box and have unique passions outside of the classroom. These hobbies and experiences often translate cohesively with their roles as educators in ways that you might not expect!
