MEET THE TELESFORD FAMILY In South Orange, New Jersey, the Telesford family exemplifies the beauty of cultural fusion and shared values. Yan, originally from Shanghai, and Qawi, a South Orange native, share a home celebrating diversity, education, and community engagement.

Photography by Jamie Meier

Yan’s journey began in Shanghai, where her passion for real estate led her to Columbia University for graduate studies. “I always wanted to expand my horizons,” she reflects on moving to the U.S. After graduating, she found her calling when she bought and redeveloped a multi-family building in Jersey City. It was here she met Qawi, finding a connection through a shared love of travel. One standout trip was a 24-hour visit to Thailand. “We took a daylong tour around Bangkok and returned that evening,” Qawi recalls. They also had a brief layover in Tokyo, where they had lunch with Qawi’s best friend from Maplewood. Their bond deepened during the pandemic when Yan moved to South Orange in 2020 to be closer to Qawi. Their backyard wedding at Qawi’s aunt’s house symbolized their commitment and family celebration. The wedding was webcast over Zoom, allowing loved ones from the U.S., U.K., China, Japan, Singapore, and Trinidad to attend. “My best friend officiated from Japan at 1:30 a.m., appearing on a laptop under our wedding arch,” Qawi notes, reflecting their blend of global experiences with local roots. Education is a cornerstone for the Telesford family. Yan has thrived in real estate development, while Qawi, with a PhD in biomedical

engineering, specializes in neuroimaging research and scientific writing. His dedication to education extends beyond his career. He serves as President of the South Orange-Maplewood Board of Education, a role he pursued to tackle persistent issues in the local educational system. Despite these challenges, he is grateful for the education he received. “I received a great education in SOMA, one that prepared me academically and culturally. It’s one reason why I and other alumni return here to raise our children.” Qawi’s dedication to his board role is evident. “I decided to get involved to make a difference,” he explains. His campaign efforts allowed him to reconnect with his community, hearing their hopes and concerns about the school district. Now in his third year, Qawi is running for re-election this November. “We’ve made significant progress in stabilizing our school system. There’s still work to do, but I’m confident we’re heading in a positive direction. I’m grateful for the chance to give back and support the future success of our next generation.” As the Telesfords prepare to welcome their second child, their commitment to nurturing the next generation is clear. Their two-year old son will soon have a sibling to join in their family adventures. Yan humorously notes they currently have “1.5 children, soon to be 2.0,” reflecting the playful spirit that defines their family. In a world that often feels divided, the Telesfords remind us of the beauty of connection—through love, education, and community. Their journey continues to inspire with their dedication to learning and making a positive difference.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH

SOUTHWEST TURKEY PASTA Prep Time: 10 mins Cook Time: 45 mins• Servings: 6 I’m always looking for variations of my family’s favorite one pot pasta dishes and today’s southwest turkey pasta did not disappoint. Loaded with flavor and a smidge of heat, this hearty dish is ready to be scooped up and served in under an hour.

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Heat the olive oil over med/high heat in a medium pot or deep sided pan until hot but not smoking. Add onion and cook until translucent, about 4 mins. 2. Stir in the garlic and cook for 2 mins. 3. Add the ground turkey to the pan, break it up and cook just until cooked through and no longer pink, about 5 mins. 4. Stir in the Southwestern spices, salt, and pepper and cook for 1 min. 5. Stir in the green chiles, tomato sauce, and turkey stock. Bring to a boil. 6. Add the fusilli to the pot and reduce to a simmer. Simmer, uncovered, and cook until the pasta is tender, about 15 mins. Stir occasionally. 7. Add the cream, black beans, and half the cheese. Stir well to combine and bring to a simmer. Simmer for 5-10 mins until the sauce is thickened and slightly reduced. 8. Stir in the cilantro. Taste and season with salt and pepper if needed. 9. Scoop into bowls and serve topped with remaining cheese, a sprinkle of cilantro and green onions if desired.

RECIPE NOTES • Can’t find southwest seasoning in the store? Make your own blend! o Southwest Seasoning: 1/2 tsp each: chili powder, ground cumin, paprika, garlic powder, kosher salt • I love ground turkey in this dish, but ground chicken or beef would make great substitutions. Be sure to drain off the excess fat if you’re using beef. • This recipe calls for dry, uncooked pasta. The pasta will cook in the stock/tomato sauce and it will help to thicken the sauce as it cooks. • Black beans are my go-to in this dish, but pink or pinto beans work too. Or use a combination for a little variety. • Like it spicy? Add a giant pinch of cayenne or a few splashes of hot sauce for a little kick!

INGREDIENTS

1 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil 1 medium onion, diced 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 1/2 lbs ground turkey 1 Tbsp Southwest seasoning (see notes for making your own 1/2 tsp kosher salt 1/2 tsp ground black pepper 7 oz minced green chiles (2 – 4.5 oz cans)

28 oz tomato sauce (1 large can) 3 cups turkey stock (or chicken stock) 8 oz fusilli pasta dry, (or pasta of your choosing) 1/3 cup heavy cream 15 oz black beans, drained (1 can) 8 oz shredded cheddar or Mexican cheese blend, divided 2 Tbsp cilantro, minced + extra for garnish green onion, sliced, for garnish

Ultimate Frisbee is a sport that requires great athleti cism, as well as “Spirit of the Game.” Ultimate is the only sport that is completely self-regulated. There are no referees; the players have to work out their issues on the field. This is the magic of the sport, and Carter embodies both the good sportsman at titude that’s required as well as the physical dedication.

CARTER WEINSTEIN #33

Another special aspect of Ultimate is that it is one of the few sports that is played with mixed Coed teams even at a high level. This summer Carter will play for the regional Devyl U20 Mixed team and compete in Colorado.

REAL ESTATE IS IT SO OR MA?

It’s Back to School. Test your knowledge of South Orange and Maplewood. 1. Tierna Davidson won the Gold Medal for Woman’s Soccer in the 2024 Paris Olympics and has recently moved to what town? 2. Jackie Dubrovich won the Gold medal as part of USA’s foil team at the Paris Olympics. Jackie’s coach and fiancé, Brian Kaneshige, live in what town? 3. This tennis club has hosted many tournaments including the US Open. Jimmy Connors, Chris Evert, John McEnroe and other Grand Slam players have competed at this club in which town? 4. The golf tee was invented in which town?

ANSWERS 1. Davidson is a two-time medal winning Olympian, taking home the Bronze at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. My buyer agent, Melissa Portfolio, sold Tierna her new home in South Orange. 2. Jackie and Brian are now planning their wedding and live in Maplewood. 3. The Orange Lawn Tennis Club in South Orange was founded in 1880 and is the second oldest tennis club in New Jersey. 4. William Lowell, a dentist who lived in Maplewood, took up golf at the Maplewood Country Club. Unhappy to tee off on a traditional mound of wet sand, Lowell shaped a dental compound to make his first golf tee. Lowell later milled his tees from wood, painted them red and named them “reddy tees”. Today, an estimated 1.5 billion golf tees are sold globally each year. HOME DESIGN “Wow! This looks so different from when you sold it a couple of years ago,” said my real estate partner, Kim. “It really does.” We were in a house that had just come on the market—a house that I had bought, renovated, and resold a few years ago. “Does it make you mad that people change your designs so much?” she asked. “Oh my gosh, no!” I exclaimed. “I think it’s great!” “When I fixed it up, I used Swiss Coffee, one of my favorite paint colors, to keep it neutral and bright. But this beautiful rich color really takes it to the next level,” I said. “Is that Kendall Charcoal?” she asked. “It looks like it, and it goes so well with the view into the kitchen,” I responded (see pic below). “I think it’s great when buyers go into a new home and create their own sanctuary. It becomes a place that reflects who they are and what makes them happy.”

“Yeah, but not every buyer has the ability to figure out what design is suited for them,” she chided. “Ahhh… but that’s where I come in. I’ve helped a number of buyers remodel or renovate their houses once they’ve moved in.” “I guess buyers should know that when they buy a house, they should look beyond the seller’s design, knowing that they’ll be able to create their own,” she said. “Right. And that can be on their own, or if they need help, I’m here for them,” I added.

INTERIOR DESIGN Well, decor lovers… as we wave goodbye to the sultry days of summer, it’s time to welcome the cozy embrace of fall with open arms—and perhaps a fabulous throw pillow or two (or four—because more is more)! This season, interior design is all about blending comfort with chic, making your space a haven for both the eyes and the soul. First up, let’s talk color. While summer was all about bright and bold, fall brings us deeper, richer hues. Think burnt oranges, deep burgundies, and earthy browns that whisper ‘warmth’ as soon as you walk into the room. And for a playful twist, why not throw in a splash of teal? It’s like giving autumn a cheeky wink! Texture is your new best friend this season. Layer up with chunky knits, fluffy rugs, and velvet drapes to create a tactile paradise that begs to be touched. These elements not only add depth but also dial up the cozy factor to maximum snuggle levels. And let’s not forget the power of a great statement piece. As the leaves start to fall, why not let your decor rise? A striking piece of art or an eye-catching light fixture can serve as the perfect conversation starter at those autumn get-togethers. So, as the days get shorter and the evenings cooler, let your home’s interior wrap you in a warm hug of seasonal style. It’s time to layer, mix, and match with autumn’s best trends to keep your living space playful yet sophisticated. Happy decorating, and here’s to a stylish, snuggly fall!

AV LUXURY DESIGN JOINS WESTFIELD VOLUNTEER RESCUE SQUAD RENOVATION

it is to give back to those who dedicate themselves to our community’s safety. The EMS professionals at the Westfield Volunteer Rescue Squad are truly exceptional, and we’re honored to contribute to this renovation.

We’re proud to be part of a meaningful project with the Westfield Volunteer Rescue Squad, a dedicated organization where volunteers go the extra mile to save lives. What sets them apart is their commitment to staying at their station around the clock, minimizing response times and potentially saving more lives in the process.

I encourage everyone in our community to think about how they can support their local first responders. Whether through volunteering, donations, or simply showing appreciation, there are many ways to give back. Let’s all find our own way to support these heroes.

Our friends at Cherry Home Design in Westfield are leading a full-on renovation of the squad’s headquarters, transforming the space to better serve these incredible volunteers. When they asked us to be involved, we knew right away it was something we wanted to do. We’ve been brought in to handle a specific part of the renovation, focusing on upgrading their lighting and audio systems. Our goal is to create a more functional and comfortable environment that supports the squad in their vital work. Being part of this project has been a rewarding experience for our team. FINANCIAL FOCUS Investing carries inherent risks that vary by asset type. Here are three key categories: Stocks: Investing in stocks or stock-based mutual funds exposes you to potential declines in value due to factors such as poor earnings, management changes, or shifts in consumer behavior. Although stocks generally appreciate over time, volatility is inevitable. To mitigate risks, consider a long-term holding strategy and diversify across sectors. Bonds: The value of bonds can decrease when interest rates rise, as new bonds may offer higher yields. Additionally, there’s credit risk if the issuer defaults. To counteract this, opt for investment-grade bonds with strong ratings from independent agencies. Certificates of Deposit (CDs): CDs typically guarantee your principal but expose you to reinvestment risk. If interest rates fall when your CD matures, you might struggle to reinvest at the same rate. To minimize this risk, consider owning CDs with staggered maturities. It’s also essential to recognize the risks of not investing. Avoiding investment or relying solely on conservative options can hinder financial growth, jeopardizing long-term goals such as retirement. Aim to create a portfolio aligned with your risk tolerance and time horizon. While risk can’t be eliminated, it can be managed effectively.

FROM THE DOCTOR CHIROPRACTIC CARE ASSOCIATED WITH REDUCTION IN LOW BACK SURGERY A recent study from University Hospitals (UH) Connor Whole Health has found that adults who initially visit a chiropractor to receive spinal manipulation for low back pain caused by disc herniation or radiculopathy (i.e., sciatica) are less likely to undergo discectomy (i.e., disc surgery) over the subsequent two years. This study was recently published in the journal BMJ Open. Chiropractic is a health care profession that focuses on treatment of musculoskeletal conditions such as low back and neck pain. The most common therapy that chiropractors use is spinal manipulation, which includes a range of hands on treatments directed to the joints of the spine. While chiropractic spinal manipulation has been found to be effective for treating low back pain, there has been limited research that explores whether this treatment is associated with a reduction in spine surgery. In this retrospective cohort study, the authors selected adult patients, age 18 to 49, from a 101 million patient United States health records network (TriNetX, Cambridge, MA, U.S.), including data from 2012 to 2022. Patients with serious pathology or urgent indications for surgery were excluded from the study. Ultimately, the authors identified 5,785 patients who initially received chiropractic spinal manipulative therapy, and the same number of patients who received other forms of medical care for their low back pain. The authors used a statistical technique called propensity score matching to control for variables that could influence the likelihood that patients would undergo discectomy. The authors found that patients who initially received chiropractic spinal manipulation for their low back pain were significantly less likely to undergo lumbar discectomy through two years’ follow-up. With a thorough Consultation, Orthopedic, Neurological and Chiropractic evaluation and appropriate imaging a determination can be made whether or not a patient with benefit from chiropractic care.

FROM THE DOCTOR

The shoulder ranks as one of the body’s most mobile joints, allowing you to lift, rotate, and reach overhead. This extensive range of motion can lead to instability, typically occurring when the head of the humerus gets forced out of the shoulder socket, often due to a fall or a force applied to the arm. After a dislocation, the shoulder becomes more susceptible to future dislocations, resulting in a chronic condition known as chronic shoulder instability. When the ligaments, tendons, and muscles around the shoulder loosen or tear, dislocations can happen repeatedly. Chronic shoulder instability refers to the inability of these tissues to keep the arm centered in the shoulder socket. Three common forms include dislocation, hyperlaxity, and multi-directional instability. Dislocation often arises from severe trauma, leading to injuries in the socket bone and front ligaments. The labrum, the cartilage rim around the glenoid, may also tear, resulting in a Bankart lesion. A first dislocation can trigger further dislocations and a sensation of instability. Multi-directional instability affects a small group of patients, allowing the shoulder to become unstable without prior injury. Symptoms include repeated dislocations, episodes of the shoulder giving way, and persistent looseness. Physical therapy often serves as the first line of treatment, focusing on strengthening and stabilizing the shoulder joint. In some cases, pain medications may provide relief, but surgery may be necessary for patients with repeated dislocations, followed by rehabilitation. CHRONIC SHOULDER INSTABILITY

NOURISH YOUR BODY, EMPOWER YOUR MIND

As a registered dietitian, my focus is on helping individuals achieve optimal health and well-being through sustainable, enjoyable nutrition. I’ve found that restrictive diets often lead to more stress and disconnection than results.

After seeing her body change through menopause, one client came to me seeking weight loss, increased energy, and improved body confidence. Her history of restrictive diets had left her feeling depleted and frustrated. Instead of focusing on deprivation, we adopted a proactive approach centered around nutrient-dense foods. By incorporating fiber-rich, protein-packed, and antioxidant-rich options, we supported her brain health, gut function, and blood sugar balance. Creating a positive eating environment and fostering sustainable movement habits were also key. This holistic approach led to reduced cravings, improved mood, and sustainable weight loss. Our journey was about nourishing her body and empowering her to make choices that aligned with her goals. It’s essential to remember that true well-being comes from a balanced approach. By focusing on nourishing our bodies and cultivating a positive relationship with food, we can achieve lasting health and well-being. Rather than focusing on what to avoid, consider: what can you add to your plate today?
