MEET THE LUTZ FAMILY
Photography by Jamie Meier
Brad and Amy’s love story began with an unexpected turn during a round of telecom layoffs. Brad assured Amy, “I will definitely reach out if I can hire you back,” unknowingly setting the stage for a lasting connection. True to his word, Brad rehired Amy, sparking a love affair that thrives two decades later. The Lutz family now includes Amy, Brad, their children Austin (16) and Caden (12), and their furry companions Dobby the dog, and cats Bruno and Jojo. Their journey as a family began in the vibrant streets of New York City, where both Brad, a Manhattan native, and Amy, a former city dweller, felt at home in the bustling energy of Brooklyn. However, the challenges of urban life, including parking difficulties, crowded spaces, and a lack of greenery, began to take a toll. Despite their dream apartment in Brooklyn, they yearned for change. Their search led them to the welcoming embrace of South Orange, where they found solace and a sense of belonging. Reflecting on their move, Brad shares, “We didn’t know anybody at all. It was an adventure, but it turned out to be the best decision we ever made. Our neighbors made us feel right at home, and the vibe felt remarkably familiar.” After moving to South Orange, Amy combined her passion for helping people with her love of design for a career in real estate. Her business stands out for its design-forward approach and her genuine care for clients. Meanwhile, Brad, a seasoned telecom executive, seamlessly transitioned to remote work, enjoying the extra time with family.

Amy and Brad wasted no time immersing themselves in SOMA life, actively engaging and joining local organizations. Brad, a dedicated flag football coach, has nurtured young talent for years. Amy has served on the PTA and currently holds the role of Booster Club Trustee, supporting Columbia high school’s football team. Both Amy and Brad are lifelong fitness enthusiasts. Amy, a former instructor at The Core Place in Maplewood, finds fulfillment in working with friends and neighbors, giving back to the place she now calls home. She shares, “My work is mostly local, and it involves collaborating with the people I care about. It’s my way of showing love to the community.” Their children, Caden and Austin, also found their niches within the community. Caden, a seventh grader at SOMS, is passionate about wrestling, diving, basketball, and football. Austin, a junior at Columbia High School, plays as wide receiver on the school’s football team and showcases his talents as a drummer in the band “Hypnotized,” which has performed at local festivals. Additionally, during the summer, Austin can be found at the YMCA, mentoring and guiding younger children. As you can imagine, the Lutz family is also very social. Amy and Brad love to host parties. They also take joy in opening their home for their sons and their many friends. Amy shares, “Living in this neighborhood means our house is always filled with friends and neighbors, day in and day out. We wouldn’t have it any other way.” When advising new buyers, Amy often mentions, “Be prepared for your doorbell to ring on your first or second day in the neighborhood, as neighbors show up with food and welcoming smiles.” The genuine warmth and open arms of the residents of SOMA creates an environment where newcomers swiftly find a place they can call home. The Lutz family takes immense pride in calling SOMA their forever home.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH
ONE POT LASAGNA SOUP Prep time: 15 mins • Cook time: 45 • Servings: 6 If you’re craving lasagna but short on time, try this one pot lasagna soup. It’s a hearty, stick-to your-ribs meal with all the flavors of traditional lasagna. Prep is minimal, and it’s ready in just an hour. Serve with garlic bread and a salad.
INSTRUCTIONS
1. Heat the olive oil in dutch oven or heavy bottomed pot over med/high heat. Add the crumbled sausage and cook until golden brown, stirring frequently, about 5-6 mins. 2. Add the onion and saute until the onion is golden and softened, 4-5 mins. Stir in the garlic. Continue cooking for 2-3 mins. 3. Add the tomato paste and stir. Add the water and cook for 2 mins, stirring up all the bits that are stuck to the pan.
4. Add the sugar, crushed tomato, tomato sauce, stock and all the herbs and seasonings. 5. Stir well and add the lasagna noodles. Bring to a boil and reduce to a simmer. Cook, uncovered, until the noodles are tender, about 25 mins. 6. Stir in the cream and parmesan and gently simmer for 5 mins (do not boil or the cream may break). 7. Ladle into bowls and serve topped with mozzarella, ricotta, grated parmesan, and herbs. RECIPE NOTES - Substitute ground beef or mix with sausage. - Tomato puree or crushed tomatoes work as tomato sauce alternatives. - Omit cream, add more stock if desired. - Thin soup with stock if too thick. - Cheesy toppings enhance the baked lasagna flavor.
1 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil 1 lb crumbled sweet Italian sausage, or links removed from casing 1 onion, chopped 4 garlic cloves, minced 6 oz tomato paste (1 can) 2 Tbsp water 28 oz crushed tomato (1 can) 15 oz tomato sauce 1 tsp sugar 2 qts beef stock INGREDIENTS
1 Tbsp Italian seasoning, dried ¼ cup fresh basil, chopped or torn + more for garnish ¼ cup fresh parsley, chopped 1 ½ tsp kosher salt ¼ tsp ground black pepper ¼ tsp red pepper flakes 8 oz dry lasagna noodles, broken into large pieces (about 10 pieces) ¾ cup heavy cream ¼ cup parmesan, grated
TOPPINGS 7 oz shredded mozzarella (1 pkg) 1 cup ricotta cheese ¼ cup parmesan, grated 2 Tbsp basil and parsley, chopped or torn

STRAIN OF THE MONTH
MAUI WOWIE
Strain of the month: September - Maui wowie for “back to school” stress. Are you a parent with back-to-school stress? Are you anxiety ridden from thinking about homework, after-school sports, making dinner, & 20 other things you have to do? Well, if so, we’ve got the strain for YOU! Maui wowie is a high-quality sativa strain with 19% THC. This strain comes from the volcanic soil of Hawaii, which gives it its sweet pineapple/tropical flavor. The most dominant terpene found in this strain is myrcene which is a very herbal, earthy scent and taste. The taste of the sweetness mixed with the herbal, earthy flavor will make your taste buds dance with joy.
When consumed, Maui wowie is known to give people an energized, euphoric feeling. You don’t have to worry about falling asleep at the table doing 5th-grade math homework while also cooking dinner because it doesn’t have a sleepy effect; it has the opposite. It keeps you focused and uplifted throughout your day, yet calm and at ease. Helping you take on the stresses of the day from morning time til bedtime. You will be happy, stress-free, and highly motivated to get stuff done, which is the best way to be, now that the school year is starting and we’re back into our routines. This strain is great for the month of September to get you intuned with a new year and relaxed and focused for all your endeavors I hope this was informative, and to all my readers, have a Maui wowie month. BOOK RELEASE Local children’s book author, Steve Ciabattoni, tackles high anxiety with a touch of humor in his debut book “Finch’s First Flight: How One Little Bird Overcame Fear of Flying” (available now from Archway Publishing). The story follows Finch, a nervous bird afraid to fly, who meets a young boy at the airport, sharing the same fear. Together, they overcome their anxieties, experiencing incredible sights and soaring higher than ever before. Ciabattoni, a South Orange resident, believes everyone, especially children, faces fears and anxieties such as flying or encountering spiders. Drawing from his own struggles with travel anxiety, he hopes this sweet and lighthearted story will reassure kids that it’s alright to feel anxious, seek help, and be brave enough to try new things. Previously working as a music journalist, teacher, and digital producer in New York City, Ciabattoni ventured into writing books. “Finch’s First Flight” is available through various online retailers and can also be found at the South Orange Public Library. Additionally, Ciabattoni left copies of the book at local lending libraries in South Orange and Maplewood.

BACK PAIN
Back pain is a common problem affecting people of all ages. It can be caused by various lifestyle factors, such as poor posture, muscle strain, and injury. Here are a few simple stretches that may alleviate lower back pain without the need for equipment. These convenient stretches can be done anywhere and at any time. If any exercise increases pain, stop immediately, and consult a licensed clinician. Cat-Cow Stretch: A yoga pose to loosen up the spine and stretch back muscles. Start on your hands and knees. Inhale and arch your back, lifting your head and tailbone towards the ceiling. Exhale and round your spine, tucking your chin towards your chest and bringing your tailbone towards your knees. Repeat x 5. Child’s Pose: This calming stretch targets the lower back muscles. Start on your hands and knees, then lower your hips back towards your heels while reaching your arms out in front of you. Rest your forehead on the floor and hold this position for five seconds. Repeat X 5. Knee-to-Chest Stretch: This stretch targets the lower back muscles and hips. Lie on your back with your knees bent and feet flat on the floor. Bring one knee up to your chest and hold for five seconds. Repeat with the other leg. Do this stretch five times on each leg. Then, bring both knees to your chest and hold for five seconds. Repeat x 5 on each leg.

FROM THE DOCTOR
VESTIBULAR ISSUES
Vestibular issues, such as dizziness and balance problems, can significantly impact patients’ lives. Physical therapists often treat injuries related to the musculoskeletal system, but when balance is affected, a vestibular examination is necessary. This helps diagnose vestibular problems and determine the need for vestibular rehabilitation therapy. The therapy aims to manage dizziness and balance issues over time, improving the patient’s quality of life. Dizziness can be a symptom of various medical conditions affecting balance. Symptoms may include muscle fatigue, headaches, and a sense of spatial disorientation. Balance relies on the interplay between the central nervous system, sensory system, and organs like the vestibular labyrinth in the inner ear. Vision, skin, joints, and muscles also contribute to spatial awareness. When these systems are disrupted, the central nervous system struggles to process information accurately. Vestibular rehabilitation therapy restores and strengthens connections within these systems, alleviating symptoms of dizziness and imbalance. Treatment plans include exercises targeting head and eye movements, as well as improving muscle strength and flexibility. By addressing these issues, patients can regain their ability to perform activities they were previously unable to do. Vestibular rehabilitation therapy offers hope for those with vestibular problems, helping them regain balance and overall well-being.
South Orange Rehabilitation & Wellness We provide professional, individualized and effective physical therapy. Our health and wellness interventions promote healthy living and enhanced quality of life for all athletes and patients.

HOME DESIGN “I’m in trouble now,” my wife announced as we entered Zaborski Emporium in Kingston, NY. Zaborski’s is a 40,000 sq. ft. warehouse filled with salvaged architectural pieces and, above all, thousands of unique light fixtures. And I have a soft spot for collecting lights. “Okay, I’ll be good,” I promised, fingers crossed behind my back. “Our attic already resembles a lighting store,” she reminded me. “I know, I know. But those lights come in handy for renovation projects where they’re a perfect fit for the design. How much better is it,” I mused, “to have a repurposed, one-of-a-kind light that beautifully enhances a space, rather than some mass-produced piece of junk from a big-box store? Each of these lights,” I said, gesturing to the row of hanging chandeliers, “has its own character and story.”
“Yes,” she agreed, “but we simply don’t have room for more. You know how much I despise seeing perfectly good pieces end up in landfills. That’s why I appreciate places like this.” I sighed, “I just wish there were more places like Zaborski’s, especially closer to home.” She suggested, “Well, you can find excellent used fixtures elsewhere, like estate sales, antique stores, or yard sales. The lesson here is that when renovating your home, consider seeking out used fixtures that align with your design, save money, and add character.”

INTERIOR DESIGN It’s September- WHORE-AYYY! The hot weather is over, the crisp cool days of Fall are on their way and I can already smell the pumpkin spice lattes. And of course, school is about to start. Last month I talked a little bit about one of the “4 P’s”. Now you’re thinking, “Hey Kate. What are the 4 P’s?” Well, thanks for asking. The “4 P’s” are my completely unscientific, totally made-up algorithm for styling a room like a pro. Here they are in order: PAINT, PILLOWS, PICTURES, and PLANTS/ I kind of went out of order and started with PICTURES in last month’s column. Honestly, the order doesn’t matter. If you want to completely change the style and feel of a space, updating these P’s will do it every time. Of the four, I would say PAINT is the most transformative. Nothing can change a room faster. I say it all the time: PAINT is a decorator’s miracle. You don’t even have to paint every wall of a room to get the impact. Sometimes just painting one wall as an “accent wall” is enough to enhance the space. Here are some other ideas for you: Paint the trim a new color. Paint shapes on the walls. Paint the ceiling. Paint built-in kitchen cabinets or old furniture. Add stripes somewhere. Cover old wood wall paneling with paint. Seriously, there are no rules. I’ll prove it to you. Just take a peek at a few examples of the above suggestions in the accompanying photos.

FINANCIAL FOCUS SHOULD YOU DOWNSIZE WHEN YOU RETIRE? The issue of downsizing is one that many retirees consider. If your children have grown and left home, you might have more space than you need. However, this doesn’t mean you must pack up and scale down. If you’re open to a change, moving to a smaller house, condo, or apartment may make sense. Let’s consider the advantages of downsizing: • Saving money: Moving to a smaller space could lower your utility bills and upkeep costs. • Saving effort: A smaller home means less maintenance and cleaning. • De-cluttering: Over the years, we accumulate more possessions than we need. Downsizing gives you a chance to de-clutter and donate items to charitable organizations. • Making money: If you’ve owned your home for many years, it might be worth more than what you paid for it. Selling it could yield a significant profit, potentially without being taxed on the gains. While downsizing offers benefits, there are drawbacks. Your home may not be worth as much as you hoped, resulting in less profit from the sale. If you had a mortgage on your larger home, purchasing a less-expensive condo or becoming a renter could affect your tax deductions. Additionally, downsizing involves the hassle of packing and moving, and smaller living spaces may not accommodate visiting family members. Consider financial, practical, and emotional factors when deciding to downsize. Communicate your thoughts to grown children or family members who may be involved in your living space. It’s a significant decision that deserves careful consideration.

COMMUNITY COALITION ON RACE TOWN HALL ON SOMA HOUSING AND DEVELOPMENT The Community Coalition on Race’s Residential Committee will host a town hall on housing and development impacts on September 14 at 7 p.m. This event aims to address the effects of master planning progress, development, zoning, affordable housing, and neighborhood issues in the South Orange/Maplewood community. The recently completed master plans in Maplewood and South Orange left residents questioning the changes as well as their impact on sustainability, diversity, and racial integration. The town hall will discuss fair share housing obligations, new approaches to development and zoning, along with efforts to make the towns affordable and diverse. Village President Sheena Collum and Maplewood Mayor Dean Dafis will present, followed by a moderated discussion and Q&A.

On Sunday, September 18, 2022 at the South Orange Performing Arts Center (SOPAC) an exciting new ministry was birthed. Thrive Church was launched in front of 200+ supporters with special guests from Grammy award winning Christian band Maverick City Music, Laila Oliviera and Nate Diaz. Founding Pastors Kobie and Melissa Morgan introduced the area to a refreshing multicultural ministry committed to helping people, families, and communities thrive in our broken and divided world. One year later, the vision continues with God’s grace and power. A diverse and relational community of survivors, strivers, and thrivers, “Thrive Nation” believes that we can all flourish through adversity with God and healthy supports. According to Co-Founding Pastor Melissa Morgan, Thrive Church has a courageous calling to heal generational brokenness and rebuild cultural bridges as well. Great things are in store for Thrive. Under the pastoral leadership of international ministry leader Dr. Tony Evans and his Kingdom Agenda Pastors network, Thrive Church is destined to continue to make an impact locally and globally in Israel, Africa, South America, and India. A native of the Maryland/DC area and a former NBA scout for the New York Knicks and Chicago Bulls, “Coach K” can be heard weekly on The Wellness Wednesdays segment on Star 99.1FM and on 570AM/The Mission. Services are held in-person on Sundays @ 11AM, with Children’s Church @ 10AM.
