MEET THE RAMSBURG FAMILY The Ramsburg family’s story is a tapestry of creativity, community, and shared passions, all beginning with the love story of John and Jamie. They met at the University of Richmond, where their shared interests in the arts sparked a deep connection. After college, they moved to New York City, where Jamie attended the Actors Studio Drama School and John worked in IT while acting and playing bass on the side. Their life was filled with the vibrancy of city life, attending shows and immersing themselves in the arts.

Photography by Jamie Meier

After New York, the couple had a stint in London, adding an international flair to their life experiences. They traveled whenever they could and embraced the rich cultural offerings of the city. Jamie shares, “I was able to direct some off-West End shows and actor showcases.” Eventually, they chose Maplewood, and later South Orange, to raise their two children, Cooper and Charlotte, because it was a place where creativity could thrive alongside a strong sense of community. Now, after 24 years of marriage, their home is a supportive environment where interests flourish. John is an IT executive and continues to express his creativity through music. He plays bass and sings in a band named “Thrill Ride”. “Music has helped scratch that creative itch,” John shares. He also enjoys playing Dungeons & Dragons with a group of local dads, fostering friendships and creativity. “It’s a great way to unwind,” he notes, while Jamie playfully teases him about it. Jamie’s involvement in the community is also significant. After volunteering with the school show and substitute teaching at

Clinton Elementary for many years, she became a second grade teacher in 2020. She loved teaching her “littles”, as she calls them, but took a step back from teaching this summer. “I wanted to spend more time with my kids before they go off to college,” she reflects, balancing her passion for teaching with family priorities. She will soon take on the role of a homebound instructor for students unable to attend public school and hopes to find time to workshop a script she is developing. Their children embody the Ramsburg spirit of creativity and community. Charlotte, 15, is deeply involved in musical theater and participates in the Special Dance Company at Columbia High School. “She loves musical theater but wants to explore other avenues too,” Jamie emphasizes. “She has a scientific mind.” Meanwhile, Cooper, 16 excels in athletics, playing baseball for many years and recently joining the CHS football team, all while nurturing his passion for music. Community service is a significant part of their lives. John has a background in community service from his previous years as an officer, and now a member, of the Elks Lodge. Cooper is also committed to service, involved in “SOMA Kids Feed Kids,” where he helps collect food donations monthly for Toni’s Kitchen in Montclair. This initiative, coordinated by a family friend, has become particularly impactful during challenging times. The Ramsburg household is home to Pepper, their beloved dog, and Mittens and Bob, their mischievous cats, adding a lively atmosphere to their home. With strong ties to their out-of-town families, the Ramsburgs greatly value the bonds they’ve made within the SOMA community. John notes, “We’ve created a second family here.” As they navigate the complexities of life, the Ramsburg family remains grounded in their shared love for one another and their community, looking forward to whatever the future holds.

NOURISH YOUR BODY, EMPOWER YOUR MIND

As a registered dietitian, my focus is on helping individuals achieve optimal health and well-being through sustainable, enjoyable nutrition. I’ve found that restrictive diets often lead to more stress and disconnection than results.

After seeing her body change through menopause, one client came to me seeking weight loss, increased energy, and improved body confidence. Her history of restrictive diets had left her feeling depleted and frustrated. Instead of focusing on deprivation, we adopted a proactive approach centered around nutrient dense foods. By incorporating fiberful, protein-packed, and antioxidant-rich options, we supported her brain health, gut function, and blood sugar balance. Creating a positive eating environment and fostering sustainable movement habits were also key. This holistic approach led to reduced cravings, improved mood, and sustainable weight loss. Our journey was about nourishing her body and empowering her to make choices that aligned with her goals. It’s essential to remember that true well-being comes from a balanced approach. By focusing on nourishing our bodies and cultivating a positive relationship with food, we can achieve lasting health and well-being.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH

PUMPKIN BREAD Prep Time: 15 mins

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Coat a 9x5x3 loaf pan with nonstick cooking spray. Set aside. 2. Cream butter and both sugars with an electric mixer on med/high speed until light and fluffy, about 2 minutes. 3. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. 4. Whisk together the pumpkin puree and buttermilk in a small bowl. Add the pumpkin mixture to butter/sugar mixture and beat on medium speed until just combined, about 1 minute. 5. Whisk together the dry ingredients in a medium bowl and gradually add it to the pumpkin mixture, beating just until combined. Stir in vanilla, being careful not to over mix. 6. Pour batter into prepared pan, smoothing the top. Bake for 1 hour and 10 mins or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Begin checking it at 1 hour to be sure not to over-bake. 7. Let the pumpkin bread cool in pan for 10 minutes before removing it to cool on a wire rack. Serve warm or cooled to room temperature.

1/2 cup sugar 2/3 cup light brown sugar, packed 1/3 cup unsalted butter, softened 2 eggs 1/4 cup buttermilk 15 oz pumpkin puree (1 can) 2 cups AP flour Cook Time: 1 hr 10 mins • Servings: 8 Welcome fall with this easy recipe for the BEST pumpkin bread! Super moist, packed with fall spiced pumpkin flavor, and did I mention EASY? This bread is great for breakfast or after school snacking. INGREDIENTS

RECIPE NOTES • Room temperature eggs and butter are optimal for this recipe. • This recipe yields a dense, moist bread. Watch it as it hits the hour mark of baking. I find that one hour and 10 mins is perfect for me, but ovens do tend to vary slightly. • Pretty loaf pans can make this bread feel even more festive for fall. Look for ones that have pumpkin or leaf designs.

1 tsp baking powder 1/2 tsp baking soda 1 tsp kosher salt 1 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon 1 tsp ground ginger 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg pinch of cloves 1 tsp vanilla extract

When interest rates drop, it can be a great opportunity to buy a home. Lower rates not only reduce your monthly payments but may also allow you to afford a higher priced home. However, in a competitive market, it’s important to present yourself as a strong buyer. Start by focusing on your credit score. A higher score signals to lenders that you’re a reliable borrower, which often leads to better mortgage offers. Pay down existing debt, avoid major purchases, and review your credit report for any mistakes that could negatively impact your score. Next, organize your financial documents. Lenders will require paperwork such as tax returns, pay stubs, and bank statements, so having these ready ahead of time can accelerate the loan approval process. In a market with limited inventory, partnering with an experienced real estate agent is key. With over 16 years of experience selling homes in SOMA, I can help you navigate the home-buying process, negotiate strategically, and stay competitive against other buyers. Having an expert on your side can make all the difference in securing the home you want. By improving your credit, preparing your finances, and working with a skilled real estate professional, you’ll strengthen your position as a buyer and improve your chances of securing a low-interest rate. Taking these steps now will not only give you an edge in today’s market but also set you up for long-term financial success in your new home. REAL ESTATE WHAT DO INTEREST RATES MEAN TO YOU?

HOME DESIGN “You’re empty-handed?” asked my wife, shocked. “Yeah,” I admitted. “Everything I really wanted was too big to get home.” I was on a gorgeous street in the Marais section of Paris, meeting my wife for dinner. I spent the day at the fabled Paris Flea Market while she spent the day adding fabulous pieces to her wardrobe. “I’m surprised that you didn’t find anything to bring home,” she remarked. “I know how much you like objects that conjure memories.” “True, and this trip has so many fond memories,” I agreed, then continued, “Speaking of memories, do you remember the last time I was in Paris?” “Twenty years ago,” she injected. “We bought that great Alberto Giacometti sculpture (see ad below).” “It’s a knockoff,” she said, correcting me. “Yeah, whatever… Anyway, every time I see it on the shelf in our living room, I think of that trip. Oh, and you don’t have to buy small objects or souvenirs from some exotic place. I remember

the day we bought our Harvey Prober 1960s bucket chairs from an estate sale in Short Hills that Jill Mendelsohn Lam was running.” “Well, since you’re always telling people to furnish or accessorize their home with objects that tell a story or have personal meaning, it’s a good thing that you do it yourself,” she said wryly. I think it’s the best way to decorate. Plus, who doesn’t love a good flea market or estate sale? It’s a treasure trove of unique, affordable items that can give your home a one of-a-kind charm.

INTERIOR DESIGN Hello, my fabulous decor lovers! This month, we’re craning our necks upwards and shining the spotlight on the unsung hero of room design—the ceiling! Yes,my loves, it’s time to elevate our sights and our sites because the drama and beauty waiting to be unleashed above us can utterly transform any space. Often overlooked, ceilings offer a vast canvas for breathtaking design possibilities that can complete or even redefine a room’s aesthetic. Imagine the elegance of a soft, painted mural overhead, adding a touch of the ethereal to your bedroom, or the bold statement of geometric wallpaper turning your office into a powerhouse of style and inspiration. But why stop at paint and paper? Architectural elements like coffered or tray ceilings can add depth and sophistication, turning a plain ceiling into a standout feature that oozes luxury. And let’s not forget about lighting—a bold chandelier or a constellation of modern pendants can not only illuminate your space but also highlight your lofty ambitions for style. So, my decor devotees, let’s break free from the constraints of the horizontal and embrace the vertical vista that the fifth wall presents. Whether it’s through color, texture, or form, enhancing your ceiling can elevate your entire design game. Remember, the sky—or in this case, the ceiling—is the limit when it comes to transforming your space into a masterpiece of personal expression and exquisite taste!

FINANCIAL FOCUS

With the presidential election just weeks away, the public eagerly anticipates the outcome and its implications for national issues. As a citizen, you likely share these concerns — but what about as an investor? Should you make moves in anticipation of potential policy changes? Let’s examine the big picture through history. Financial markets have fluctuated under both Democratic and Republican presidents, with similar patterns for Congress. While decisions in Washington affect markets, it’s often challenging to draw a direct correlation between political events and market performance. Political candidates frequently make promises that don’t materialize, or yield different results than expected. Other institutions, such as the Federal Reserve, which controls short-term interest rates, also impact various market sectors. Additionally, external events like foreign conflicts or natural disasters can create short-term investment shifts. Instead of altering your portfolio based on election outcomes, focus on factors that truly influence your investments: Your goals : Define your short- and long-term objectives. For short-term needs, prioritize stability; for long-term goals like retirement, include growth-oriented investments. Your risk tolerance : Ensure your portfolio aligns with your comfort level regarding risk. Your time horizon : Adjust your investment approach as you progress through life stages. Your liquidity needs : Maintain sufficient cash and equivalents to handle unexpected expenses. Ultimately, concentrate on long-term strategies that align with your goals rather than the candidates on the ballot. VOTE FOR SOLID INVESTMENT STRATEGIES

FROM THE DOCTOR WHAT SHOULD I KNOW ABOUT INTERVERTEBRAL DISCS? Lower back pain can be debilitating and all-consuming. One common cause of this pain is the degeneration or herniation of intervertebral discs. Intervertebral discs cushion the vertebrae in the spinal column. These discs can degenerate as part of the natural aging process, leading to symptoms such as: • Pain in the legs, thighs, and buttocks that worsens with standing or sitting •Pain in the lower back • Pain in the neck • Muscle stiffness that worsens over months • Pins-and-needles sensation • Muscle spasms. Many non-invasive methods relieve pain associated with intervertebral disc problems. You can also adopt daily habits to keep your discs healthy: • Maintain a healthy weight • Stay active with appropriate stretching and strengthening exercises • Consider your mattress and sleeping posture • Check your posture at your workstation. South Orange Chiropractic offers the expertise to alleviate pain from degenerative discs and help you maintain strength to prevent future issues. Our thorough evaluation includes thermal imaging, digital X-rays, and orthopedic and neurological assessments to establish an appropriate diagnosis and treatment plan. If further diagnostics are necessary, we will recommend them. Each individual’s situation differs, so we tailor strategies to achieve success. If your case requires a different healthcare professional, we will guide you accordingly.

FROM THE DOCTOR

ANKLE REPLACEMENT SURGERY

Many people with ankle injuries either undergo physical therapy or take medication for pain relief. In most cases, they improve, and the issue resolves. However, some individuals continue to experience persistent pain or injury. These patients often seek surgical options to address their problems. Severe arthritis usually qualifies patients for surgery, and ankle replacement surgery becomes a viable consideration. When patients visit the doctor, they typically struggle with walking and face significant pain and swelling in the ankle. The doctor examines the ankle to diagnose arthritis and often prescribes physical therapy to strengthen the joint. Research shows that pre-operative physical therapy improves patient outcomes by building strength. After completing PT, patients schedule their surgery date. Ankle replacement surgery proves successful for many, but it carries risks, including infection, nerve damage, bleeding, blood clots, improper bone fusion, misalignment, new arthritis in adjacent joints, loosening of artificial components, and wear of the components, which may necessitate follow up surgery. Individual lifestyles influence the level of risk. Post-surgery, patients engage in more physical therapy to restore range of motion. They experience pain and swelling and often remain non-weight bearing in a splint or boot. The surgeon advises when weight-bearing restrictions lift. Initially, PT aims to restore motion and control pain, while later goals focus on normalizing gait patterns. Join the Community Coalition on Race for our free year-end programs! The Schools Committee invites you to learn about the seven candidates vying for three open seats at the annual Board of Education Candidates’ Forum on October 29th at 7:30 p.m. This discussion will focus on candidates sharing their visions for racial equity and integration, as well as how schools can best encourage and support students of all races to excel. In November, the Schools Committee will host a free Preschool Open House for families with young children. This event will showcase local preschools, daycares, aftercare, and enrichment programs for residents of SOMA and surrounding communities. The evening will begin with a presentation on selecting a preschool and discussing the importance of preschool experiences in fostering kindergarten readiness. Afterward, attendees can visit exhibitors. This year proved powerful for our Integration through the Arts program. LITTLE STAGES HAS EXPANDED, AND WE ARE ACCEPTING ENROLLMENT FOR ‘24 -’25

GET TO KNOW: SHERRY SACKS

Sherry Sacks, an artist and South Orange resident, has a rich story that intertwines her artistic passion with family life. Originally from Fort Greene, Brooklyn, Sherry made the move to SOMA in 2009 to provide a nurturing environment for her family. “We moved from Brooklyn to South Orange to raise our kids,” she shares. Her husband, Pau Santesmasses, a native of Barcelona, and their two sons, Blai and Biel, who are both students at Columbia High School, have embraced their new community. Sherry’s artistic journey has been shaped by her education at the University of Maryland and George Washington University. She currently works on various projects, recently stating, “I’m working on a small pink cement piece for you. Come by Thursday,” in a text message to a friend. Beyond her artistic endeavors, Sherry is an adventurous traveler. “People would be surprised to know I spent a month traveling solo around Thailand, exploring and getting certified to scuba dive,” she reveals, showcasing her adventurous spirit. Her home life is lively, with cheese, tomatoes, and wine being staples in her refrigerator. What does she love most about SOMA? “Tony Smith’s monumental sculpture TAU is a highlight. MEDICARE

When enrolling in Medicare, you can choose between Original Medicare (Parts A and B) or a Medicare Advantage plan (Part C) that combines both types of coverage. Part D, which covers prescription drugs, is also available. However, you aren’t locked into these plans forever. Medicare offers opportunities to change your plan(s) based on your situation. During Medicare’s Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) from October 15th to December 7th , you can review and modify your Part C (Advantage) or Part D (prescription) plans. Options include switching between Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage, enrolling in or canceling a Part D prescription plan, and changing your current Part D plan. From January 1st to March 31st, the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment period allows you to drop your Medicare Advantage plan and return to Original Medicare, add a Part D prescription plan, or drop your current Part D plan. If you need to make changes outside of these periods, you may qualify for a 2-month Special Enrollment Period (SEP) due to certain circumstances like a move or loss of coverage. During an SEP, you can switch plans without penalty or enroll in a Medigap plan without medical underwriting. To determine if you qualify for an SEP, contact me promptly after the qualifying event. I’m here to assist you throughout the process. Understanding Medicare enrollment periods empowers you to make informed choices about your healthcare coverage. BOOK RELEASE

“HIDDEN GIRLS: A BIRTH MOTHER’S STORY

Julia MacDonnell, a resident of Maplewood, released her latest book, Hidden Girls: A Birth Mother’s Story of Reunion and Reckoning. This hybrid memoir combines journalistic insights into the history of closed adoption with MacDonnell’s personal experience of relinquishing her first child as a teenager in 1967. When MacDonnell “gave him up,” she believed she would never see him again and would always keep it a secret. However, her life changed dramatically fifty years later when her son reached out after Massachusetts opened adoption records. “My jubilation about this reconnection soon upended my life,” she recalls, as she faced memories of shame and love. The author feels compelled to share her story, particularly amid concerns about women’s reproductive rights following the recent changes to Roe v. Wade. “I feared that women would lose control of their reproductive rights again,” she explains.

Kirkus Reviews praised Hidden Girls as “a visceral, moving account of adoption and the systems that prioritize profit and propriety over people.” Kathryn Joyce, author of The Child Catchers, called it “an important beautifully-told accounting of a terrible history.” Marylee MacDonald, author of Surrender, noted, “It is both every birth mother’s story and a story that is completely unique to the author.” MacDonnell’s memoir is set to resonate with readers, shedding light on a significant social issue.
