THE TONG-JOHE FAMILY

Photography by Jamie Meier

Helen and Rene Tong-Johe balance a family of five with their family-owned business in an exhilarating journey. Helen, who was born and raised in Bensonhurst, feels at home in South Orange among her Brooklynite neighbors. Rene, a long-time resident of New Jersey, enjoys hiking with his daughters in the town’s surrounding reservation and biking on less-traveled streets. As they reflect on their experiences, they share insights into their children’s growth, community involvement, and the joy of parenthood. Helen recalls, “We met about twenty years ago when I was a patient at Rutgers Dental School, where Rene taught Orthodontics. After serving in the US Army, I returned to the dental school to visit, and that’s how we reconnected. We just clicked.” Their shared professional goals and connection led them to establish a joint pediatric dental and orthodontic specialty practice in West Orange. Rene adds, “We genuinely appreciate the strong support from our surrounding communities. We strive to give back by involving our entire family in volunteer work, such as cleaning up South Mountain Reservation. Our office also sponsors community events like the AAPI stop Anti-Asian Hate 5k run and the South Mountain YMCA Duck Race, raising money for children and families. Additionally, we offer college scholarships to current and former patients of our office.” Alongside their thriving practice, Helen and Rene take pride in being the parents of three wonderful children. daughter, Lyla, aged six, is an active and athletic child who loves school and cherishes her friendships. Helen proudly shares, “Lyla is energetic and excels in cycling, swimming, and jiu-jitsu. We were thrilled when she won a kindergarten contest for reading the most minutes in her class at Marshall.” The identical twins, Alle and Ella, bring an extra dose of joy and excitement to the family at the age of three. Helen explains, “The twins are playful and cute, and there’s never a dull moment. They are still little fighters, but they share a deep bond. All we hope for is that they become best friends.” Helen and Rene’s dedication to their multicultural heritage also influences their parenting. Helen, who is of Chinese descent, explains, “I am fluent in Cantonese but not literate. We initially enrolled Lyla in a Mandarin program, but it was challenging to reinforce the language barrier at home. Now, we’re focusing on teaching our children German since Rene can provide reinforcement.” Rene adds, “We bring the kids to a local Oktoberfest celebration every year, and Lyla has the opportunity to converse with her grandparents in German. It’s part of our efforts to expose them to European culture.” As Helen and Rene continue their professional and family journey, they create beautiful, healthy smiles for their patients while fostering a loving and nurturing environment for their own children. Helen explains, “It is a joy to watch our patients grow from toddlers to young adults. We get to share the milestones and accomplishments in their lives while they transition from pediatric dental care through orthodontics.” Through their shared practice, they blend family, community, and multicultural heritage harmoniously. SOMA is a perfect place for the Tong-Johe family.

A NEW LEASH ON LIFE

Growing up, our home was filled with rescue animals, cherished as family members. Inspired by our rescue cat Suzy, my mother dedicated her spare time to our local animal shelter. Through her efforts and fundraising initiatives, the shelter transformed into a no-kill facility. She even featured adoptable dogs on the news and stayed in touch with their new families.

Holly and Hudson

After our beloved rescue dog Skippy passed away, my mother agreed to foster a dog named Buster. Despite his rough appearance, Buster was incredibly gentle and loving. His sweet nature allowed my mother to take him to schools and nursing homes, educating others about pet adoption. Years later, my friend Holly and her family rescued a dog named Hudson. With training and certification, Hudson became a therapy dog, bringing joy to people and dogs alike. He started working at a preschool, participated in the Reading to Dogs program at the library, and will soon work in hospitals and nursing homes. As a realtor, I’m always delighted when new homeowners ask about adopting a furry companion. Being the Pet of the Month Sponsor, I have the opportunity to showcase amazing rescue animals like Hudson. They exemplify the essence of rescuing: giving animals a second chance and providing the love they need to thrive. Not every dog can become a therapy dog, but Buster and Hudson show that a dog’s past doesn’t define them.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH

INSTRUCTIONS

BEST FLAKY BISCUITS Prep time: 30 mins • Cook time: 22 + 15 mins chilling time • Servings: 8 Biscuits are practically a religion in my house and we’re forever on the quest for the best flaky biscuits out there. If biscuits are on the menu, we’re ordering them. If it’s the holiday, I’m baking them. And today I’m here to tell you that the search is over. Because these are the Best. Flaky. Biscuits. EVER. I’ve gathered tips and information from countless recipes, bakeries, restaurants, including my own baking and tweaking over the years. Today’s recipe is the culmination of all that (tasty) research.

RECIPE NOTES • COLD, COLD, COLD ingredients, especially frozen butter, yield the flakiest biscuits.

1. Preheat the oven to 425 degrees. 2. Whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, sugar, and salt in a large bowl. 3. Use a box grater to grate the frozen butter and add immediately to the flour mixture. Mix the butter in with your finger tips just until you have coarse meal. 4. Add the buttermilk and stir in until just combined. The dough will be very shaggy. 5. Turn the dough onto a lightly flour surface and press to form a 10 inch square. Fold in half, then in half again so you have a square. 6. Lightly roll the dough into a 10 inch square again and repeat the folding, in half, then in half again so you have a square. 7. Lightly roll the dough to 1 inch thickness and cut out the biscuits with a 3 inch cookie cutter (round or square). See tips. 8. Place biscuits in a cast iron skillet or parchment lined baking pan with sides, so the biscuits are touching (they may topple if the baking pan doesn’t support them on their sides). Place the pan in the refrigerator or freezer for at least 15 mins. 9. Brush with buttermilk and sprinkle with flaky sea salt. Bake in the middle or upper rack of your oven until risen and golden, about 20-22 mins. Serve warm or at room temperature.

• Do not use food a processor! Use your hands to blend the butter into the dry ingredients. Use just your fingertips, not your entire hands, so the butter doesn’t melt. TIPS FOR FORMING THE BISCUITS • You can skip the folding technique, but your biscuits won’t be as layered. • Don’t over-work the dough. The butter only needs to be tossed into the dry ingredients and any large pieces broken up with your fingertips. • When cutting the biscuits, use a sharp-edged cutter dipped in flour between cuts. Press straight down and back up, NO TWISTING! This will help your biscuits rise. • Place the biscuits on the baking sheet so they’re just touching, not pressed into each other. • Chill for at least 15 minutes before baking!

3 cups AP flour 2 Tbsp baking powder ½ tsp baking soda 1 Tbsp sugar 1 ½ tsp kosher salt INGREDIENTS

6 oz unsalted butter, frozen (1 ½ sticks) 1 ¼ cups buttermilk (+2 Tbsp for topping) 1 tsp flaky sea salt (I like Maldon)

FROM THE DOCTOR

WHY DOES MY SCIATICA PAIN WORSEN?

According to a study published in the National Library of Medicine, nearly 30% of sciatica patients endure persistent pain for over a year. When dealing with chronic sciatica, it’s crucial to identify the factors responsible for exacerbating your pain and worsening of symptoms. Then you can modify your behavior or seek additional assistance. Improper Exercise: Choose the right exercises and do them correctly. Improper lifting, bending, or twisting can irritate your sciatic nerves and surrounding muscles. These actions also increase the risk of developing a herniated disc, which can further exacerbate your sciatica. High-impact exercises like running can irritate the sciatic nerve and worsen your symptoms. Extended Periods of Inactivity: If your job requires long hours of sitting without movement or stretching, it can immobilize your spine. Prolonged sitting also places pressure on your lower back and sciatic nerves, leading to increased sciatica pain. Your Mattress: Sleeping on a mattress that is either too soft or too hard can aggravate a pinched or inflamed sciatic nerve by placing excessive pressure on your lower back. Obesity: Being overweight, especially in the hip and lower back region, increases pressure and stress on the pelvic muscles and lower back. Degenerative Disc Disease: Aging can lead to natural wear and tear of spinal discs, resulting in degenerative disc disease. A licensed chiropractor can guide you in exercising and stretching correctly, strengthening your muscles and improving your range of motion without aggravating your sciatica.

FROM THE DOCTOR OSTEOPOROSIS AND WEIGHTLIFTING: BUILDING STRONG BONES We all know that exercise is crucial for overall health. Let’s focus on bone health, where weight-bearing exercises that challenge gravity while maintaining an upright position are recognized for building bone density. Strong and healthy bones are essential in preventing fractures, which can be achieved through various exercises, including weightlifting. While weightlifting is beneficial, strength training also plays a vital role in a well-rounded fitness routine. Combining weight training with other high-impact exercises is a recipe for strong bones. During weight-bearing exercises, muscles and tendons apply tension to stimulate bone tissue growth, reducing the likelihood of osteoporosis, osteopenia, and fractures. Osteoporosis is a bone disease characterized by a decrease in bone mineral density and mass, leading to weakened bone structure and increased fracture risk. Often a “silent” disease without symptoms, fractures may be the first indication of its presence. Osteoporosis is a major cause of fractures in postmenopausal women and older men, with hip, spine, and wrist bones being most susceptible. An active lifestyle with osteoporosis may increase the chances of fractures. So, can you lift weights with osteoporosis? The answer is yes, and it is encouraged. Seeking guidance from a physical therapist is essential for safe weightlifting. A physical therapist can develop specific exercises to build strength while minimizing fracture risk. Some exercises involve light weights and upper body movements. Weight-bearing activities such as walking, balance exercises, and stability training are particularly effective. If advanced osteoporosis is diagnosed, modifications are made to prevent further injury. A thorough examination is always conducted before tailoring an exercise program.

FINANCIAL FOCUS October is National Retirement Security Week, a time to focus on building a secure retirement. Take these steps to ensure a comfortable future: First, consider your potential longevity. On average, men at 65 can expect about 20 more years, while women can anticipate nearly 22 years. Plan your finances with the possibility of spending two or three decades in retirement. Second, don’t underestimate healthcare costs. While certain expenses may decrease upon retirement, healthcare expenses often rise. Many assume that Medicare or Medicare Advantage plans cover all healthcare costs, but that’s not the case. Generally, expect to spend $4,500 to $6,500 per year on healthcare during retirement, excluding long-term care expenses. Third, contribute as much as possible to retirement plans. Maximize 401(k) or employer-sponsored plans, and consider traditional or Roth IRAs for tax benefits and diverse investments. 1. Maintain an appropriate investment mix. While it may be tempting to shift your portfolio to conservative investments, maintaining some growth-oriented investments can help combat inflation. Regularly rebalance your investments to manage risk effectively. 2. Determine a suitable withdrawal rate. Avoid depleting your savings prematurely by establishing an annual withdrawal rate. A common starting point is 4%, but factors such as age, portfolio size, and other income sources should influence your decision.Achieving retirement security may have challenges, but the effort is worthwhile. In retirement, enhance financial security:

INTERIOR DESIGN Happy Fall decor lovers! In the last 2 months, I’ve discussed my unscientific algorithm for styling a room like a pro. I call it the “4 P’s.” If you missed the previous columns, here’s a quick recap. In August, we talked about PICTURES. In September, we discussed PAINT. And now, let’s dive into the most controversial of the “4 P’s.” Decor and controversy? Yes friends... we’re talking about: PILLOWS! Yes!!! Pillows often spark an old fashioned battle of the sexes. In my experience women love them, and men... not so into it... of course, I’m overgeneralizing. But I will say that while ‘gender and pillow love’ aren’t inextricably linked, some houses may still be divided on this one! But in my opinion, pillows have the power to transform a sofa, sectional, bed, or chair by adding texture, color, pattern, and personality! Don’t believe me? Take a look at these affWHOREdable finds from HomeGoods, HomeSense, or TJ Maxx. They can turn your space from bland to BAM! Now, you may be wondering where to sit with all those pillows on the sofa. You have options: put the pillows on the floor, in a basket, or better yet, use them. I love a pillow behind my back for extra lumbar support while hunkering down into our sofa for movie night. And when I get up, I simply put the pillows back and give them a good zshoosh! Stay tuned for the final “P” featured here next month!!

HOME DESIGN “Can I paint these doors?” asked a potential buyer. “Yes, of course you can, but would you really want to?” I asked. A young couple, first-time home buyers, and I were staring at an old wooden bedroom door. “It looks kind of beat up,” he responded. “It definitely does, but there are options for restoring old wooden doors. You can take them down, sand them, give them a fresh coat of stain, seal them, and put them back up with new hardware. That would look awesome, like you have brand new beautiful wooden doors.” “Well...,” he hemmed. “You don’t want him to DIY anything,” his wife chimed in. “True,” conceded the husband, “I’m not very handy.” I quickly replied, “I also find that it’s best to let the professionals do the work.

There are a couple of great restoration places in the area.” “Still,” the wife hesitantly added, “I really like the look of black painted doors. I think it’s really chic.” To which I suggested, “Why not sell or donate these old doors, then buy new pre-painted doors in the color you like?” “That works,” the husband said, gratefully. “Whether to paint or restore old wooden doors and moldings is a big debate in our town. But sometimes there’s a happy solution that doesn’t include a landfill,” I concluded.

@somalivingmagazine

My wife and I moved to South Orange in 2013 from NYC looking for more space for our growing family. After considering all of our available schooling options, we decided to blaze our own trail. In 2021, we established a learning center in Mountainside, converting a former Catholic school building to serve families from SOMA and surrounding towns. This Fall marks our third year, and we are excited to welcome back over forty learners. What began as an effort to provide an alternative learning environment for local families quickly grew to become a resource for innovation. Our mission at The Village Electric is to re-energize education by providing a space where children, from preschool to high school, can learn in a flexible, personalized, and self-directed manner. We aspire to empower more young people to take charge of their education, learn at their own pace, and explore their passions. The task has been significantly more challenging than we anticipated. But what drives us is the desire to see the same innovation and progress in education that we see in technology and consumer products. Currently, there is an explosion of exciting new resources such as Space X’s Astra Nova, Khan Academy, OutSchool, Prisma, and many others. These formats and content regularly inform our program and inspire us to continuously improve our center so that our learners can thrive. To learn more, please visit thevillageelectric.com. The Schools Committee hosts a Board of Education Candidates’ Meet & Greet on October 9th at 7 pm at Marshall Elementary School. The annual gala, Celebrating Integration: Growing Our Commitment to Equity & Inclusion, honors Dr. Ahadi Bugg Levine and Gail Safian. MEDICARE

When enrolling in Medicare, you can choose between Original Medicare (Parts A and B) or a Medicare Advantage plan (Part C) that combines both types of coverage. Part D, which covers prescription drugs, is also available. However, you aren’t locked into these plans forever. Medicare offers opportunities to change your plan(s) based on your situation. During Medicare’s Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) from October 15th to December 7th, you can review and modify your Part C (Advantage) or Part D (prescription) plans. Options include switching between Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage, enrolling in or canceling a Part D prescription plan, and changing your current Part D plan. From January 1st to March 31st, the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment period allows you to drop your Medicare Advantage plan and return to Original Medicare, add a Part D prescription plan, or drop your current Part D plan. If you need to make changes outside of these periods, you may qualify for a 2-month Special Enrollment Period (SEP) due to certain circumstances like a move or loss of coverage. During an SEP, you can switch plans without penalty or enroll in a Medigap plan without medical underwriting. To determine if you qualify for an SEP, contact me promptly after the qualifying event. I’m here to assist you throughout the process. Understanding Medicare enrollment periods empowers you to make informed choices about your healthcare coverage. Feel free to reach out for any assistance you need. MEDICARE ENROLLMENT PERIODS

SMALL BUSINESS WHY FREE CASH FLOW MATTERS MORE THAN EBITDA FOR SMALL BUSINESSES EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization) is a widely used metric in finance for assessing profitability. However, legendary investor Warren Buffet criticizes EBITDA, arguing that it fails to capture a company’s true value. This article emphasizes the significance of free cash flow as a more vital indicator of a company’s financial well-being, especially for small businesses. EBITDA offers a snapshot of profitability by excluding interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization expenses. Nevertheless, it has a critical limitation—it overlooks cash generation, a point strongly emphasized by Buffet and his partner, Charlie Munger. To illustrate this, consider a black box analogy: an empty box may be worth around $20, but if it contains $1 million inside it annually, its value significantly increases. This analogy highlights that an asset’s worth hinges on the cash it generates. For small businesses, the primary focus should be on generating free cash flow, representing the cash a business generates after accounting for all expenses and investments. It provides a more precise measure of financial health, indicating the ability to cover expenses, invest in growth, and reward stakeholders. Above all, free cash flow ensures financial stability while allowing a small business to meet day to day financial obligations, seize growth opportunities, as well as secure long-term success.

MAPSO FOLLIES AUDITIONS FOR MAPSO FAMILY FOLLIES: OLD-TIMEY TALENT & QUIRKY FUN

The first Mapso Family Follies Talent Show, scheduled for November 16th at 7:30 pm at The Woodland, aims to blend the spirit of “Waiting for Guffman,” “Gong Show,” and “Stupid Human Tricks,” according to co-producer Tori Chickering. Chickering, along with event creator and co producer Lara Tomlin, emphasizes that it is not a contest but rather an opportunity for talented individuals to explore unusual and whimsical performances. Whether it’s clogging to a neighbor’s rendition of “I Will Survive” on the bassoon or step dancing to original spoken word, nearly anything is welcome. Sally Unsworth from Maplewood Arts & Culture adds, “There are a few rules for auditioners to follow.” Participants must be at least 9 years old, perform in groups rather than solos, showcase acoustic acts only, and adhere to a strict three-minute time limit. Additionally, no spiders or snakes are allowed. A panel of local luminaries will judge the auditions, which are open to surrounding communities, on October 18th and 19th from 6-8 pm at The Woodland. They will select the fifteen most entertaining acts, giving preference to performances involving multiple generations. “So, gather your neighbors and grandparents. The more, the merrier on stage,” says Chickering, who has extensive experience in producing, directing, and emceeing follies-type shows. He added, “Bring out your bird calls, tap shoes, and marching band batons. Let’s unleash our unpredictable side.”
