MEET THE BOWIN FAMILY The Bowin family is a vibrant unit that blends a rich tapestry of diverse cultures and global experiences. Alison and her husband Nitai, along with their two energetic children, Cole (6) and Liv (3 1/2), create a welcoming environment for relatives and a wide circle of local and international friends. Their transition from Manhattan to Maplewood narrates a tale of love, adventure, and a deep dedication to both local and global causes. “We decided to relocate from the Upper West Side during the peak of COVID-19, seeking a place where our double stroller wouldn’t catch on scaffolding anymore,” Alison chuckles. “Maplewood’s charm and sense of community won us over immediately.” Alison and Nitai’s journey commenced in 2010, as volunteer English teachers for the Peace Corps in Ukraine. “Our paths crossed in Kyiv while we were studying Russian in preparation for our service,” Alison shares. “I was stationed south of Kharkiv, and Nitai was assigned to Crimea. Both locations hold significant memories for us.” Their bond with Ukraine remains strong. “During a recent trip to Germany, we reunited with a former Ukrainian colleague – assisting them in finding a new home after fleeing the conflict, witnessing their recovery was truly remarkable,” Alison recounts. “Ukraine has given us so much, and we cherish the connections we maintain there.” Nitai’s upbringing in a multicultural household on the west coast adds to their diverse background. “My parents relocated to California from Israel 45 years ago,” Nitai explains. “While I occasionally miss the forests of Northern California, Maplewood evokes memories of my hometown, Nevada City.”

Their children, Cole and Liv, bring immense joy and fulfillment to their lives. “Cole is deeply involved in sports, attending drop-off birthday parties, and cherishing his art classes at Pop Blossom – his social calendar is busier than mine,” Alison jests. “Liv, at 3 1/2, exudes maturity beyond her years,” Nitai remarks. “When she’s not requesting a visit to Leo’s for a nail session, she’s either organizing her playdates or enthusiastically recounting her preschool adventures – our friends affectionately call her a little ‘assistant principal.’” Alison’s demanding role at Con Edison, overseeing crews to ensure Manhattan’s lights stay on, keeps her occupied. “It’s a challenging yet rewarding position with an unconventional schedule that I truly enjoy,” she remarks. Meanwhile, Nitai is engaged in a financial tech startup focusing on credit solutions. “Balancing our professional commitments with family time is crucial, ensuring we remain connected to our local community here in SOMA.” Their recent investment in Pallet Brewing Company, slated to open in Maplewood next year, reflects their desire to

combine adult and family entertainment. “The brewery is a project we’re thrilled about, believing it will fill a void in SOMA – a space where both adults and children can have a great time,” Alison expresses enthusiastically. Residing in the Golf Island area, the Bowin family is deeply rooted in their surroundings. “We frequent the village daily, visiting friends, playgrounds, and Memorial Park,” Nitai mentions. “Living within walking distance to numerous amenities is precisely what we envisioned.” In the current global landscape, Alison and Nitai’s narrative serves as a testament to the importance of connections, community, and the influence of cultural diversity. They have intertwined their distinct backgrounds to create a vibrant family dynamic, positively impacting both local and global spheres. “Returning to New Jersey feels like coming home,” Nitai reflects. “Our journey has brought us closer together, and we are grateful for every experience along the way.”

CALLIE EXAS

New moms often feel pressured to bounce back quickly after giving birth. As a mom of two little ones, I understand this pressure all too well. Having gone through my own healing journey, I want to discuss this sacred, often disorienting time. A client of mine, Leah, recently aimed to lose 15 pounds of baby weight. Despite running most days, watching her diet, and breastfeeding, she felt frustrated by a plateau. The pressure many new moms feel to return to their pre-baby bodies is often unrealistic and harmful. It’s crucial to focus on healing and regaining strength rather than forcing the body back into shape. As a dietitian and trainer, I help postpartum women shift their expectations and mindset for a positive healing journey. We prioritize stabilizing the nervous system, replenishing nutrients, and rebuilding muscle mass. By creating a safe and supportive environment, we can regulate stress responses and promote overall well-being. This approach stabilizes healthy metabolic function and strengthens the mind-body connection, helping women feel confident and strong as they heal. Pregnancy brings a woman’s body to the brink of its endurance. Recovery requires compassion, consistency, and, most importantly, time. By nourishing your body instead of adhering to unrealistic standards, you can feel grounded, at peace, and confident in your new skin

RECIPE OF THE MONTH

1 Tbsp olive oil 1 medium onion, thinly sliced into half moons 1 jalapeno, seeded and chopped 8 oz leftover turkey, diced 1/2 tsp ground cumin 1/2 tsp chili powder kosher salt and pepper leftover cranberry chutney or sauce sour cream cilantro, chopped 1 avocado, pitted and sliced 8 flour tortillas, warmed or charred (fajita size, 6 inch) Cook Time: 10 mins • Servings: 8 Transform your Thanksgiving leftovers into a whole new meal! Spice up the leftover turkey and fold it into charred tortillas and top with cilantro, sour cream, avocado, and a big dollop of cranberry chutney (or cranberry sauce). The result is a super zesty taco that tastes nothing like Thanksgiving dinner. INGREDIENTS LEFTOVER TURKEY TACOS Prep Time: 15 mins

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Heat the olive oil over med/high heat in a large saute pan until hot. Add the onion and jalapeño and saute until golden brown, about 8 mins. 2. Add the turkey and spices and cook until heated through, stringing constantly, about 5 mins. Season with salt and pepper. 3. To serve, spoon some of the chicken/onion mixture on a tortilla shell and garnish with cranberry chutney, sour cream, cilantro, and avocado. RECIPE NOTES • I love cranberry chutney (you can find the recipe at www.whatshouldimakefor.com) in these tacos because it packs a zingy, tangy punch thanks to apple cider vinegar and fresh ginger. Leftover cranberry sauce will work too, but maybe kick it up with a sprinkle of ground ginger and cayenne. • Make these tacos your own by adding in your favorite toppings like cotija cheese or a big splash of hot sauce. • Don’t cook the turkey with the spices for very long. You just want to heat it through, remember it’s already cooked so we won’t want it to become tough or leathery! www.WHATSHOULDIMAKEFOR.com

She’s worked in restaurants, owned an online bakery, has a bordering-on-problematic cookbook obsession and is the writer, photographer and recipe developer for the blog whatshouldimakefor.com. She lives in South Orange with her well-fed family, overstocked pantry, and mildly excessive collection of cookie cutters.

REAL ESTATE WHAT MAKES A STRONG REALTOR

A strong realtor is more than someone who lists properties or drives buyers around and opens doors to show homes. A strong relator should be a partner, advocate and someone who walks you through the entire process. From the moment a person is ready to buy or sell, a strong agent should be essential in helping that the experience is smooth and stress-free, from consultation to closing. A key to a good agent is strong negotiating skills. Whether representing buyers or sellers, a seasoned realtor knows how to confidently handle multiple-offer situations and craft strategic counteroffers. For sellers, a strong agent prices homes right to attract and show value to buyers. For buyers, a local realtor knows the value of a home based on its location and neighborhood trends. A strong local realtor knows the neighborhood and is connected to the community. They know which homes will come on the market before they hit the market. A strong realtor is involved and doesn’t hand off the sale to a team member. A strong realtor is in constant contact with their clients. Communication about the buying or selling process is crucial to a successful sale. A strong realtor picks up the phone, texts or emails back to keep their clients updated. A strong realtor combines knowledge and support for what can sometimes be an overwhelming process. Let my experience make your experience as smooth as possible.

HOME DESIGN “Great Caesar’s ghost,” I grunted. My real estate partner, Kim Kelly, laughed, “The lights, right?” “You know me too well,” I sighed. We stood in the living room of a newly renovated home. A dozen recessed lights shone a blinding blue-toned white light down on us. “It’s really not funny. People don’t understand how lighting, the wrong lighting, like this,” I said, looking up at the ceiling, “can affect them physically and mentally.” I squinted my eyes against the light. “Am I in for your sleep cycle rant again?” she sighed. “You are!” I replied. “Can you just give me the Cliff Notes version? We have other houses to see…” she said impatiently. “Over the course of millennia, our sleep cycle was formed by the rising and setting of the sun. Warm sunlight would wake us up in the morning, giving way to cool blue light

during the day, and then at night, the setting sunlight would bring on sleep. The color temperature of light during the cycle of the day would change and tell our bodies what to do. Physically, or more like chemically, in the morning, the warm sunlight, as it turned cooler in color, would produce serotonin, which would wake us up so we were alert and energetic, like in case we had to run from a predator. And at the end of the day, while the sunlight turned warm and we sat by firelight, our bodies would produce melatonin, which helped put us to sleep. Now I don’t know about you, but most people use their living room at night, so why this?” I pointed up. “Just why?” To be continued…

INTERIOR DESIGN Hello, my fabulous decor lovers! As we wave a chilly goodbye to fall and usher in the brisk winter winds, it’s time to snuggle up and transform our homes into warm, welcoming havens. Who’s ready to dive into a toasty pile of decor tips? Grab your hot cocoa, and let’s get styling! First up, COLOR! Nothing says “warm up the room” like a palette that pops with rich browns, deep reds, and those yummy muted oranges. These hues aren’t just gorgeous; they hug your soul and warm your toes, making every room feel like a cozy embrace. But it’s not just about the colors; it’s about the cuddle! Layering textures feels like building your very own bear den. Think luscious rugs underfoot, plush pillows that scream (or politely suggest) pillow fights, heavy curtains that keep the chill out, and oh, those knitted throws—knotty and nice! And don’t overlook the importance of lighting. Swap out the sun’s rays for the soft glow of lamps, the twinkling charm of string lights, and the dancing flames of candles. It’s all about setting a mood with lighting that transforms your space into a magical winter nook. So there it is, decor divas and design dudes! Spruce up your space with layers of love and touches of warmth that make every return home a reason to celebrate. Remember, making your home a winter wonderland of warmth is not just about surviving the cold; it’s about thriving in your own stylish sanctuary! COZY UP: CRAFTING WARM SPACES FOR WINTER’S CHILL

ILLUMINATING YOUR HOME: THE IMPACT OF QUALITY LIGHTING

Lighting is more than just a functional necessity; it’s a crucial element that shapes the atmosphere and aesthetic of your living spaces. High-quality lighting enhances the beauty of your home. Investing in high-end fixtures that accurately reproduce light can dramatically transform your environment. These fixtures mimic natural light, offering a full spectrum that brings out the true colors of your interiors, resulting in a more vibrant and inviting atmosphere. If your home still features traditional five or six inch recessed lights, it might be the perfect moment to consider an upgrade. Transitioning to sleeker 4-inch fixtures—or even 2-inch options—modernizes your home’s look and improves light quality. Smaller fixtures provide a minimalist aesthetic that blends seamlessly with contemporary designs, enhancing form and function. The best time to improve your lighting is anytime—even during renovations or retrofits. Upgrading your fixtures can be seamlessly integrated into other home improvement

projects. It’s also an excellent opportunity to consider smart switches, which can add convenience and efficiency to your daily life. Navigating the complexities of lighting design can be overwhelming, but you don’t have to do it alone. We offer specialized services to help you select and install the perfect fixtures for your home. Whether you’re renovating or just looking to refresh your space, we’re here to provide expert guidance tailored to your needs. Quality lighting is an investment in your home’s beauty and quality of life. We’d like to help you illuminate your living spaces in the best possible light.

MEDICARE

MEDICARE ADVANTAGE PLAN

When you become eligible for Medicare, you face a series of choices. One of the first choices involves the type of coverage you prefer. Medicare Parts A and B comprise what is known as Original Medicare. But if you prefer to enroll in a plan managed by a private health insurance company, you can choose Medicare Part C, or Medicare Advantage. Part C plans combine Part A and Part B benefits, and often include Part D (prescription drug) benefits as well. While you will still pay for Part B, the Medicare Advantage plan will administer all of the Medicare benefits for you. How to Choose a Medicare Advantage Plan With so many options out there, choosing a Medicare plan can feel overwhelming to just about everyone. Fortunately, insurance professionals dedicate themselves to learning all of the ins and outs of the different options available and can guide you toward the plan(s) best suited for your needs. First, ask yourself some important questions to begin identifying your priorities: • Are you attached to any specific healthcare providers? Do they accept any Medicare Advantage plans or only Original Medicare? • What types of insurance is accepted at your preferred hospital? • Do you frequently travel out of your coverage area, or do you spend significant time at a second home? • How much risk can you tolerate? Do you have savings or another source of funding in the event of significant medical bills? • How much peace of mind do you want to achieve? Do you need to know that your healthcare spending will remain steady over time? Or are you okay with fluctuating expenses? If you are ready to explore Medicare options, please contact me at (201) 704-7872 or rhubsmith@RHMediFactor.com; www.RHMediFactor.com

FROM THE DOCTOR MINDING YOUR POSTURE Working on your feet all day can be taxing, affecting you from head to toe. You support your entire weight while squatting, stretching, and bending, which may leave you sore in your neck, shoulders, and lower back. Your legs might feel exhausted, and your feet may throb. Fortunately, one solution doesn’t require quitting your job. It simply involves standing up straight and improving your posture. Most of us tend to slouch, and with many spending increased time at home, good posture becomes even more essential. You might not think about sitting upright throughout the day, making it easy to slump over your computer or while watching videos. Posture includes not only how you sit and stand but also how you move and hold your body during every activity, including sleep. By paying more attention to posture, you can reduce your risk of various aches, pains, balance issues, and even breathing problems. Hearing that you should improve your posture and knowing how to do it are two different things. Here are some tips: SETTING UP FOR SUCCESS • When you notice slouching, take a breath and straighten up.

FROM THE DOCTOR

ANKLE REPLACEMENT SURGERY

Many people with ankle injuries either undergo physical therapy or take medication for pain relief. In most cases, they improve, and the issue resolves. However, some individuals continue to experience persistent pain or injury. These patients often seek surgical options to address their problems. Severe arthritis usually qualifies patients for surgery, and ankle replacement surgery becomes a viable consideration. When patients visit the doctor, they typically struggle with walking and face significant pain and swelling in the ankle. The doctor examines the ankle to diagnose arthritis and often prescribes physical therapy to strengthen the joint. Research shows that pre-operative physical therapy improves patient outcomes by building strength. After completing PT, patients schedule their surgery date. Ankle replacement surgery proves successful for many, but it carries risks, including infection, nerve damage, bleeding, blood clots, improper bone fusion, misalignment, new arthritis in adjacent joints, loosening of artificial components, and wear of the components, which may necessitate follow up surgery. Individual lifestyles influence the level of risk. Post-surgery, patients engage in more physical therapy to restore range of motion. They experience pain and swelling and often remain non-weight bearing in a splint or boot. The surgeon advises when weight-bearing restrictions lift. Initially, PT aims to restore motion and control pain, while later goals focus on normalizing gait patterns. Patients should maintain open communication with their therapist regarding any symptom changes or unusual signs, such as drainage from the incision.

Fran Lichtman and Randy Rabney, a dynamic couple with 34 years of partnership, made the move to South Orange/ Maplewood Area (SOMA) in 2022, driven by a desire for a community where their family could thrive without labels. Former Upper West Side residents, they were pleasantly surprised to find a welcoming environment that embraced their family dynamic. Their 24-year-old son, a college graduate who lives in Brooklyn, frequently returns home to connect with his roots and share his passion for music. Professionally, both Fran and Randy are successful realtors, but their backgrounds are rich and varied. Fran once served as a Senior Executive at Atlantic Records, even dining with rock legend David Crosby, while Randy boasts a law degree and has tried cases in front of Judge Judy. Their lives are also flavored by Randy’s culinary talent, with a well stocked kitchen that always includes a dozen organic eggs, a bottle of hot sauce, and Dijon mustard. The couple passionately supports the community, particularly valuing the Pride Festival, which they have sponsored since its inception. They cherish its family-friendly atmosphere and the opportunity it provides to advocate for youth. Among their favorite local spots are Artie’s for its seasonal corn pie and Able Baker, owned by their former Maplewood neighbors.

FINANCIAL FOCUS As we enter the annual season of giving, consider how to support charities while gaining tax benefits. Traditionally, you wrote a check to a charity and deducted the amount from your taxes. However, recent tax law changes significantly raised the standard deduction, leading to fewer people itemizing deductions and reducing financial incentives for charitable gifts. • Bunch your charitable gifts: Combine several years’ worth of gifts into one year. This approach may help you exceed the standard deduction and allow itemizing for that year. In subsequent years, you can revert to the standard deduction. • Make qualified charitable distributions (QCDs): After turning 73 (or 75 if born in 1960 or later), you must start taking withdrawals from your traditional or inherited IRA, known as required minimum distributions (RMDs). These withdrawals are taxable and could push you into a higher tax bracket. Donating RMDs directly to a qualified charity allows you to avoid taxes. You can start making QCDs at 70½, even before RMDs begin. • Consider a donor-advised fund: This arrangement allows you to contribute various assets and direct grants to chosen charities. You receive an immediate tax deduction for your contribution and avoid capital gains taxes. Consult your tax advisor before taking action on these strategies. You can still enjoy some tax advantages with smart strategies:

SUN JACKSON

Fifteen-year-old Sun Jackson from Maplewood, NJ, debuts her album, September Fridays, now streaming everywhere. This unique project highlights a father-daughter collaboration, with Sun writing all ten original songs herself, beginning at just 11 years old. Her father, D.D. Jackson, a multi-Emmy-winning composer and producer, co-produced the album and contributed arrangements. “Working with my dad made this experience even more special,” Sun shares. Currently a 10th grader at Columbia High School, Sun immerses herself in a rich musical environment that has produced stars like SZA and Lauryn Hill. From age six, she recorded melodies into her voice memo app, saying, “I didn’t know anything about song structure! I just dove in.” Influenced by artists like Billie Eilish, Laura Marling, and Prince, Sun explores various genres, including indie, folk, and jazz. INTRODUCING SUN JACKSON: A RISING STAR IN MUSIC

Her album showcases emotional depth, from the playful “Dan” to the reflective “I Miss Autumn.” The title track, “The Way She Looked At Me (September Fridays),” features intricate tempo changes.
