MEET THE KERRIGAN TYSEN FAMILY

Photography by Jamie Meier

Theatre writers Kait Kerrigan and Nathan Tysen are celebrating their 9th wedding anniversary with their adaptation of The Great Gatsby at the Papermill Playhouse. Bookwriter / lyricist Kait Kerrigan and Tony-award-nominated lyricist Nathan Tysen first crossed paths 13 years ago at a writing retreat in Silicon Valley. “The world of musical theater is very small,’ says Nathan. “We knew of each other for years, but this was the first time we met.” Four years later, they married, and a year after that they welcomed their first child, Lucy, shortly followed by Nathan’s first Broadway show Tuck Everlasting. Nathan’s parents Harry and Linda Tysen found themselves visiting from Kansas often. The two generations decided to pool their resources and buy a two-family home together in Maplewood. “So many theatre people live in Maplewood,” Kait explains. “It didn’t take long for us to fall in love with the community.” Linda and Harry are affectionately called “Mimi” and “Bop” by Lucy, now age 8, and her almost three-year-old sister Tess. The couple live downstairs in the shared duplex. “My parents moved here to help us with the kids, but they’ve become very active in the community too,” Nathan says. “My mom volunteers at the library and my dad is a volunteer chaplain for the police department.” Mimi also joined a local Facebook group called “Grand Nannies,” a group of grandparents who moved to the area to support their kids. Bop sings with a glee club and barbershop quartet. • NATURAL GAS GRILL HOOKUPS • FREEZEPROOF HOSE SPIGOTS • WATER FILTERS AND TREATMENT UNITS “FOR YOUR PLUMBING & HEATING NEEDS CALL TORO TO THE RESCUE!” 973-672-1000

Their growing social circle further integrates the entire family into the SOMA community. “We knew that raising our children with their grandparents would enrich their lives,” Kait says. “The thing we didn’t anticipate was how much it enriches ours.” Last summer, Kait and Nathan invited Patrick Parker, former Associate Artistic Director of the Papermill Playhouse, to a reading of The Great Gatsby, which is their first project that they’ve written together. “Doing a show at a Tony-award-winning regional theater like the Papermill is a goal for any writer, but it’s in our own backyard, so this really was the dream for us,” says Kait. Patrick shared it with Mark Hoebee, the theater’s Artistic Director. Soon, conversations began with the producer of The Great Gatsby and the show opened this year’s 85th season with a sold-out run. Nathan adds, “Being able to run home and put our kids to bed on the dinner break during our tech rehearsals has made all the difference.” Life doesn’t stop when The Great Gatsby opens. The family travels to London the following week for the opening of The Time Traveller’s Wife in the West End. Kerrigan wrote additional lyrics and the whole family is going for a much-needed vacation.

SOMA DREAM TEAM MAKEOVER

This month’s feature is Natalie Beth Picow.

Julie Perlow- Retail Therapy - Natalie and I have been friends for years so styling her was fun and effortless. She used to consign and purchase from my store so I know what type of silhouette is flattering for her. She does not shy away from dramatic pieces and vibrant colors; so she’s a dream to work with!

Natalie is a former actress and TV and Film Producer with a passion for the arts and my community. She is presently working as an Event producer for Springfield Avenue Maplewood (SAM) and a Realtor at West of Hudson Real Estate. She loves swimming in the South Orange pool in the summer and hiking in the Reservation in the Fall. She also enjoys all the artistic and civic events, open space, and free concerts at Floods Hill and Sopac. Jill Cohen, TheCannaBossLady - Natalie has been struggling with anxiety and needs a boost of energy. I suggested Xula Uplift Gummies with CBG & THCV to her. CBG helps in calming the mind, while THCV provides an energetic and focused boost. Additionally, Natalie is

She looked amazing in the bright yellow, puffy sleeved sweater and jeans. She rocked the Edwardian black velvet jacket. She has a great shape and I gave her the encouragement to show it off as I often do. The photos came out beautifully!

Rebecca Kirkwood, Makeup artist - Natalie prefers a natural look with her makeup, so I focused on skin prep first, using a lovely nutrient mist and hydrating cream. Then it was on to creating radiant looking skin with

Warm toned browns and gold eyeshadows work so nicely with her golden complexion, and we finished the look with a pretty berry lipstick that works well with a variety of outfits! RECIPE OF THE MONTH

INSTRUCTIONS

SWEET POTATO PIE WITH MARSHMALLOW WHIPPED CREAM Prep Time: 15 mins Cook Time: 1 hr 10 mins + 1 5 mins chilling time • Servings: 8 It’s that time of year again when I’m consumed with root veggies, all things pumpkin, and plotting which pie (like this sweet potato pie with marshmallow whipped cream) will be the star of my Thanksgiving spread. This year the honor goes to this beauty complete with a buttery crust; soft, spiced filling; and dolloped with my new favorite topping, marshmallow whipped cream.

MARSHMALLOW WHIPPED CREAM 1. Whip the heavy cream in a bowl until you have soft peaks. 2. Beat in the confectioners sugar until you have stiff peaks. 3. Add the marshmallow fluff and beat just until combined. DON’T OVERBEAT or the whipped cream will become too loose. Mix in the vanilla. TO SERVE Serve the cooled pie with the marshmallow whipped cream either piped on top in decorative swirls, spooned and swirled on top, or alongside.

SWEET POTATO PIE 1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. If using homemade pie crust, drape the the pie crust in the pie plate and crimp the edges. 2. Chill the pie crust in the refrigerator or freezer while you prepare the filling. Brush the edges with heavy cream. 3. Scoop the flesh out from the slightly cooled potatoes and place in a bowl. Discard the skins. 4. Beat the sweet potatoes with the butter, sugar, spices and salt. Add the eggs and continue beating. 5. Beat in the cream and vanilla until well blended. 6. Scrape the potato mixture into the pie shell and smooth the top. Bake for at least 60 minutes and check for doneness. The pie should be set and only slightly jiggly in the center. If it’s not set, return to the oven for 5-10 mins until done. Remove to a wire rack and cool before topping with marshmallow whipped cream.

INGREDIENTS

SWEET POTATO PIE 1 unbaked 9 inch pie shell (1 recipe Buttery Pie Crust from whatshouldimakefor.com) 2 lbs sweet potatoes, baked and cooled slightly (about 3 large sweet potatoes) 1/3 cup unsalted butter, softened 1 cup light brown sugar, packed

2 eggs ¾ cup heavy cream + 2 Tbsp for the crust 2 tsp vanilla extract MARSHMALLOW WHIPPED CREAM 1 cup heavy cream ¼ cup confectioners sugar 2 cups marshmallow fluff 1 tsp vanilla extract

1 tsp cinnamon, ground ½ tsp nutmeg, ground ½ tsp kosher salt

FROM THE DOCTOR Good posture is often associated with standing up straight, but it is equally important when it comes to sleep. Different sleeping positions can affect the shoulders, neck, and spine. Poor sleep posture can strain muscles and ligaments, causing unnecessary discomfort. It’s helpful to know the healthiest sleeping position for your body. While there is no universally best sleeping position, it is important to consider the potential effects of different positions. Side sleeping is common among adults, with more than half of their sleeping time spent in this position. It can help keep airways open, reducing snoring and mild sleep apnea. Sleeping on the back promotes better alignment and reduces pressure on the arms and legs, making it beneficial for those with neck or back pain, especially in the lower back. However, snoring is more common in this position. Sleeping on the stomach, also known as the prone position, is not recommended as it can increase heart rate, strain the neck, and worsen the curve of the lower spine. Consult a chiropractor for recommendations on sleep posture and appropriate pillows based on clinical findings, your particular complaints, and x-ray results. Prioritizing good sleep posture can contribute to overall spinal health and enhance sleep quality. SLEEPING POSTURE IS IMPORTANT TOO

FROM THE DOCTOR

ACHILLES TENDONITIS

The Achilles tendon is vital for ankle motion and can develop tendinitis when inflamed or injured. It’s the body’s largest tendon, connecting calf muscles to the heel bone, used for walking, running, climbing stairs, jumping, and standing on tiptoes. Overuse can lead to tendinitis, affecting both athletes and everyday individuals. Achilles tendinitis involves acute inflammation causing swelling, pain, or irritation. Terms like tendinitis, tendinosis, and tendinopathy describe the same condition. Distinguish it from an Achilles rupture, where the tendon separates or tears. Two types exist: non-insertional and insertional. Non-insertional tendinitis affects the middle fibers, leading to swelling, thickening, and tiny tears. It commonly affects younger, active individuals, especially runners. Insertional tendinitis occurs where the tendon attaches to the heel bone, often forming bone spurs. It can occur at any activity level but is prevalent in runners due to calf muscle tightness stressing the tendon. Treatment involves evaluation by a PT or MD. Symptoms include pain, stiffness, swelling, and thickening, worsened by shoes. Treatments include surgical or non-surgical options. Non-surgical methods include rest, PT to reduce inflammation using ice and limiting activities, and stretching programs. Modalities like cold laser and ultrasound decrease inflammation and speed healing. Strengthening exercises prevent reinjury. Cortisone injections may be necessary. Regular communication with therapists and doctors is vital to track progress.

CREATING PURPOSE Discover the Secret of Creating ‘Purpose’ and Use It to Vanquish the Competition In the United States, approximately 1 in 12 businesses closes each year. The success of these businesses often hinges on their underlying purpose, which is closely tied to their mission and how they communicate this mission to their target customers. Your business’s purpose goes beyond the pursuit of profits. It’s about attracting and retaining customers. Your sales, operations, and marketing efforts should revolve around drawing in customers, ensuring their return, and encouraging them to advocate for your products. Defining your business’s purpose is essential. Start with the “why” – focus on why you offer your products or services. Customers and investors are more interested in the reason behind your offerings than the offerings themselves. For instance, consider Apple’s success. Their “Think different” slogan emphasizes their mission beyond selling devices. They promise self-expression through their products, making them more than just gadgets. To create a meaningful purpose, address current societal challenges and align your mission with addressing them. Your purpose should be consistent, credible, and believed in by the business owner and founder, so others, especially employees, can embrace it. In conclusion, purpose is the linchpin of business success. To position your company effectively, consider seeking guidance from a business coach and advisors who can assist in shaping a valuable purpose, establishing your vision, and translating it into actionable plans for your business. FINANCIAL FOCUS

UNDERSTANDING HSAS AND FSAS

Managing healthcare costs can be challenging. Are you utilizing available resources to the fullest? Let’s explore Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) and Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs). An HSA is a personal savings account for healthcare expenses. If you qualify for a high-deductible health plan, you may contribute to an HSA. Contributions and earnings are untaxed when used for qualified healthcare costs like deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance. HSAs do not have a “use it or lose it” provision, allowing you to retain funds until retirement for qualified expenses not covered by Medicare or Medigap. In 2023, the maximum contribution is $3,850 for individuals ($4,850 for those 55 or older) and $7,750 for family coverage. Employers often offer FSAs, which function differently. FSAs are funded with pre-tax dollars, reducing taxable income. In 2023, the maximum contribution to an FSA is $3,050. Employers may also contribute. To receive reimbursement, submit claims with supporting documentation for medical expenses not covered by your plan. Accurately estimating annual medical expenses is crucial for FSAs, as unspent funds typically expire at the end of the plan year. Up to $610 from 2023 can be carried over to 2024. Note that you cannot contribute to both an HSA and a traditional FSA in the same year. However, if you have an HSA, you may qualify for a Limited Purpose Flexible Spending Account (LPFSA) covering dental and vision expenses. Confirm availability with your plan. Effectively managing healthcare expenses is vital for your overall financial strategy. Consider maximizing benefits by utilizing HSAs or FSAs.

REAL ESTATE

ADU – A NEW HOUSING OPTION

The COVID pandemic prompted numerous individuals to leave New York City and relocate to the New Jersey suburbs. Simultaneously, the number of people working from home increased sixfold. This shift in the workforce and workplace directly impacted the housing inventory in New Jersey and, consequently, SOMA. To meet the demand for homeownership, a handful of New Jersey townships, including Maplewood and South Orange, adopted ordinances allowing the construction of Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) on existing properties. An ADU is a self-contained portion of a principal one/ two-family dwelling or an accessory structure that can function as an independent residence. ADUs are important because they benefit residents, particularly seniors wishing to downsize and remain in the SOMA community. ADUs offer families a means to earn extra income, while also providing more housing options. Restrictions and regulations govern the size, height, parking, and design of an ADU. For more information, please visit the Zoning and Building Department’s website at southorange.org/960/Accessory-Dwelling-Units. The use of ADUs presents a new solution to homeownership in New Jersey. It comes as no surprise that SOMA leads the way in helping people find a new way to live in our beautiful community.

HOME DESIGN “So what color do you want to paint the outside of the house?” asked my wife. “Well since it’s a cottage style house, I was thinking we could go with white on white to give it a modern look. White body with white shutters and white trim.” My wife and I were discussing our latest whole house renovation project. The house we call Chloe. “That’ll look beautiful,” she said, “As long as we get the right white. You know how tricky whites can be.” “Do you remember how we found the house color for our very first renovation project?” I asked. She smiled, “Oh absolutely! We were driving in Florham Park and we saw a bank that was painted the perfect color yellow.” “Yes, I laughed. I still have the pictures of you with the paint fan deck trying to figure out the name of that paint.” “How about we check out that beautiful white on white house we see when we walk the dog?” she asked. “Great,

I love that shade of white. And that house has the same orientation, so it gets the same type of sunlight.” I replied. You know there’s nothing like seeing a whole building painted in a color you’re thinking of using. It’s a great way to really see a color in action! P.S. The owner of that white house was gracious enough to tell us what paint color he used. But first he informed us that they had gone through 11 color swatches on the house and used a color expert to find the right white! We only had to ask him to find our perfect color, lol…. INTERIOR DESIGN Happy November, decor lovers! And happy almost Thanksgiving. As usual, time sure does fly. Over the last few months, I’ve been discussing what I like to call the “4 P’s.” And this month, we’re on the fourth P. But before I reveal that, let’s recap the first three: pictures, paint, and pillows. Can you guess what the fourth is? It’s not pizazz, although it came close to making the cut. It’s...wait for it...plants. Yes, plants! Now, before you toss this magazine aside in frustration, thinking, “Seriously, Kate? Plants? In what universe do I have time to care for my family, job, pets, AND plants?” Well, I have the answer: the universe of fake plants. Today’s faux plants can be game-changers for interior decor. You can find incredibly realistic and reasonably priced floral arrangements practically anywhere. They look great, don’t break the bank, and require no care. My only suggestion is to dust them occasionally. Other than that, just place them and let them beautify your space. I know it sounds ridiculously easy, and that’s because it is. Plants, even faux ones, bring vitality, color, texture, and a connection to mother nature that infuses a calming energy into any room. If you have an empty spot in your home, whether it’s a shelf, coffee table, bookcase, or a corner, simply add a suitably sized plant, and voila! The space is instantly elevated. See what I mean?

MEDICARE

MEDICARE ADVANTAGE PLAN

When you become eligible for Medicare, you face a series of choices. One of the first choices involves the type of coverage you prefer. Medicare Parts A and B comprise what is known as Original Medicare. But if you prefer to enroll in a plan managed by a private health insurance company, you can choose Medicare Part C, or Medicare Advantage. Part C plans combine Part A and Part B benefits, and often include Part D (prescription drug) benefits as well. While you will still pay for Part B, the Medicare Advantage plan will administer all of the Medicare benefits for you. How to Choose a Medicare Advantage Plan With so many options out there, choosing a Medicare plan can feel overwhelming to just about everyone. Fortunately, insurance professionals dedicate themselves to learning all of the ins and outs of the different options available and can guide you toward the plan(s) best suited for your needs. First, ask yourself some important questions to begin identifying your priorities: • Are you attached to any specific healthcare providers? Do they accept any Medicare Advantage plans or only Original Medicare? • What types of insurance is accepted at your preferred hospital? • Do you frequently travel out of your coverage area, or do you spend significant time at a second home? • How much risk can you tolerate? Do you have savings or another source of funding in the event of significant medical bills? • How much peace of mind do you want to achieve? Do you need to know that your healthcare spending will remain steady over time? Or are you okay with fluctuating expenses? If you are ready to explore Medicare options, please contact me at (201) 704-7872 or rhubsmith@RHMediFactor.com; www.RHMediFactor.com

If you’re living in SOMA, you undoubtedly know Columbia High School is the birthplace of Ultimate Frisbee. But some of you may be wondering, what exactly is ultimate frisbee? It’s a thrilling seven versus seven person team sport played on a 40-yard wide by 120-yard long field. The objective is simple yet exhilarating: work the disc up the field and catch it in the marked end zones. But there’s more to it than meets the eye. In Ultimate Frisbee, players take on different positions. Handlers are responsible for creating throws, strategically passing the disc to the cutters. Cutters, on the other hand, make skillful routes on the field to catch the disc and score points. What sets Ultimate Frisbee apart is that it is a self-refereed sport, with players on the field making their own calls. It’s a true testament to the spirit of fair play and sportsmanship. The CHS Team remains a top competitor in the world of Ultimate Frisbee. This talented team travels extensively throughout the year, competing at a high level against other top teams on the East Coast. Last year, competed head-to-head with the best high school teams in the country at the national championships in Utah. The CHS Ultimate Frisbee club operates independently from the school. Players take charge of raising money for essentials such as new jerseys, tournament fees, and field rentals. This year, you can support the team by purchasing delicious fruit, meat, and vegetable pies during their Fall fundraiser. Purchase pies from door to door sales or online at columbiahsultimate.org/support. ULTIMATE FRISBEE THE EXCITING WORLD OF ULTIMATE FRISBEE

HOLIDAY GUIDE

STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO MAKE A HAND TURKEY! Outline your hand. Grab a fresh sheet of white printer paper and trace the outline of your hand using a sharp pencil. Tip: You might want to remove bracelets and bling for smoother lines. Admire your handiwork. Yay! You’ve traced your hand. Now draw a line to separate your “feathers” from the body of your turkey. Color in the lines. Or don’t! Trace your “turkey” in brown marker, then use crayons to have fun! Add and glue on feathers if you have them. Draw wings and feet. Using makers, draw a wing on the body of the turkey and two little turkey legs with toes. Glue on a googly eye. Glue one on if you got ‘em, otherwise a simple black dot with a marker will do the trick. Add a waddle and snood. Draw on the waddle and snood with red and orange markers. Then impress your friends with the fact that you know what those turkey parts are called. Put on a festive hat. Draw it in black marker, the run a line of glue for the buckle, sprinkle with glitter and shake. Your masterpiece is served!
