MEET THE HOPKINS-DAVIS FAMILY
Photography by Jamie Meier
In 2008, when Will Hopkins paddled his canoe across a Canadian lake to invite the “cute actress” from across the water to a campfire, little did he know that a whole life would unfold in the years to follow. Will was working as a schoolteacher in Brooklyn and spent his summers running the canoe tripping program at his camp alma mater, Camp Pathfinder. Diane’s family owned a cottage across the lake. “I was sitting in our family cottage with my dad. Will paddled up, invited me to a campfire, and the rest is history.” Their summer romance continued in Brooklyn that fall, and they married two years later … at Camp Pathfinder, of course. Fourteen years, three children, and a move to Maplewood later, the previous owners of Camp Pathfinder discussed selling the camp to Will. Diane recalls, “While caring for my mother during her final days, Will called with news that Pathfinder was for sale. It was a ‘why not?’ moment for us. We realize life is short and when adventure comes, you should seize it.” Camp Pathfinder, situated on a 17-acre island in Algonquin Park, specializes in canoe trips for boys. “Anyone identifying as a boy,” Will clarifies. For over 112 years, it has taught leadership and collaboration through challenging expeditions. “I don’t work there,” says Diane, adding with a laugh: “I consider myself the First Lady of Camp Pathfinder. I have my own career, one that keeps me fulfilled and busy.” Diane is a Broadway actress whose career includes notable roles such as Ginny Potter in “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” and in the latest Tony winning revival of “Appropriate”. In her free time, she loves to sing with her band, The Local Heroes, who play Country Americana music around South Orange and Maplewood.

The family—Will, Diane, and their daughters Eleanor (13), Harriet (10), and Cecilia (7)—moved to Maplewood in 2014, charmed by its warmth and diversity. An actor friend of Diane’s introduced them to the area. “When we were looking for a house to buy, I remember getting off the train one day and feeling like this town was giving me a hug,” says Diane. Eleanor excels in volleyball at Maplewood Middle School. Harriet, a unique artist, creates mixed-media pieces at the Oakland Road Art Club. Cecilia, a Lego enthusiast, attends Weekday School in South Orange for her sensory needs. “We love the Maplewood schools; our teachers are the best – and deserve more pay!” Diane comments. “But Cecilia needed a smaller setting than public schools offered. Weekday is perfect.” The Hopkins/Davis family values the strong sense of community in Maplewood. “We have our issues,” Diane says, “I think any community does. But at the end of the day, I would much rather have the debates we have here than in so many other places.” Will remembers the nourishing meals that neighbors cooked for them after their babies were born, and after Diane’s mother passed away. “We have a profound appreciation for the ‘earned trust’ within the SOMa community,” he says. “I don’t think there is anywhere else we would want to raise our children.” The Hopkins/Davis family exemplifies community, adventure, and creativity. Their story showcases the power of shared experiences and finding a true sense of belonging.

HEALTH & WELLNESS
Photos by Megan Yates
Individual metabolic rates vary due to genetics, age, sex, and body composition. A calorie deficit for one may not apply to another. Factors such as stress, sleep quality, and gut microbiome composition also significantly affect how bodies process and store energy.
Managing fat loss involves more than just the “calories in, calories out” (CICO) principle. While energy balance plays a role, multiple biological factors contribute to the process. Focusing solely on willpower and arithmetic neglects critical scientific insights. Hormones exert significant influence over fat loss. Insulin resistance, often linked to high-carbohydrate diets and sedentary lifestyles, hinders the body’s ability to access stored fat even with a calorie deficit. Leptin and ghrelin, hormones that regulate appetite and satiety, must function properly to support consistent weight management. The quality of consumed calories is crucial. Nutrient-dense whole foods differ metabolically from processed snacks. Whole foods offer essential vitamins, minerals, and fiber that support metabolic health and satiety. Conversely, processed foods can cause blood sugar spikes, inflammation, and increased fat storage.
Effective body management demands more than a simple equation. Embrace a holistic approach, emphasizing nutrient-rich foods, regular exercise, stress management, and adequate sleep. This method promises more sustainable and healthy results than mere calorie counting. If you’re ready to explore working with your body in a comprehensive way, feel free to reach out! My team and I are eager to help you figure things out and build healthy habits that last for LIFE.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH
INGREDIENTS EVERYTHING BAGEL SALMON WITH TOMATO CUCUMBER SALAD Prep Time: 15 mins • Marinating Time: 30 mins Cook Time: 5 mins Servings: 4 We’re bringing brunch to dinner with this everything bagel salmon with tomato cucumber salad that tastes just like your favorite bagel with all the fixings (minus the bagel!). 1 1/2 lbs salmon (4 - 6 oz skinless filets) 1 cup buttermilk 1/4 cup Wondra flour (AP can be substituted) 1/4 cup everything bagel spice TOMATO CUCUMBER SALAD 12 oz cherry tomatoes, halved or quartered 1 seedless cucumber, diced 1 small red onion, diced 2 Tbsp capers 1 lemon, zested and juiced 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil + extra for sautéing kosher salt and pepper
INSTRUCTIONS
EVERYTHING BAGEL SALMON 1. Marinate the salmon in the buttermilk for 30 mins. Pat the excess buttermilk off with a paper towel before dredging. 2. Combine the flour and everything bagel spice in a shallow dish. Dredge the salmon in the coating and set aside. 3. Coat the bottom of a non stick pan with olive oil and heat until hot, but not smoking. 4. Add the salmon and sauté on each side about 2-3 mins (for medium rare - medium depending on the thickness of your salmon). Adjust the heat if necessary to prevent the salmon from burning. 5. Remove the salmon to a rack or paper towel lined plate. TOMATO CUCUMBER SALAD 1. While the salmon rests in the buttermilk, make the tomato cucumber salad. Combine the tomatoes, cucumber, red onion, capers in a bowl. 2. Whisk together the lemon juice, lemon zest, and olive oil in a bowl. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Toss with the vegetables. TO SERVE 1. Stir the cream cheese with a spoon of heavy cream or half and half to thin slightly. 2. Smear a spoonful of the thinned cream cheese on a plate. Top with a salmon filet and spoon the tomato cucumber over the top.
RECIPE NOTES • Can’t find everything bagel spice? Simply combine equal parts dried minced garlic, poppy seeds, sesame seeds, dried minced onion, and kosher or sea salt. • Wondra flour gives the salmon a light, crispy crust. If you don’t have it, all purpose flour can be substituted. • If you’re making your own everything bagel spice, make a big batch! You can use it to top casseroles, make homemade bagel crisps or crackers, shake over popcorn or top avocado toast! • Soaking the salmon imparts a slightly tangy flavor and helps the coating to adhere. Don’t let it sit much longer than 30 mins or it can effect the texture of the fish. • Be sure to lightly season the salad with salt and pepper, but don’t season the fish with salt and pepper. Everything bagel spice already has a high salt content and additional salt will make the fish too salty. • The Wondra coating allows the fish to brown nicely. Be sure to adjust the heat if it begins to0 brown too quickly. • The cream cheese smear isn’t a must, but makes a pretty presentation and adds a nice creaminess to the dish.
CREAM CHEESE SMEAR 1/2 cup whipped cream cheese 1 Tbsp heavy cream or half and half

These proj ects can be repairs, improvements, or upgrades to an existing landscape, distinct from regular maintenance or large capital improvements. CARPET GIRL Does the word “carpet” evoke anxiety in your life? Is shopping for carpet “the last thing you want to do”? Good! The Carpet Girl is here to take the angst out of shopping for any carpet, custom carpet stair runners, or other faux flooring needs. Our family has 30 years of flooring experience, which set the stage for starting Carpet Girl in 2011. Celebrating 14 years, owner Dianne Grossman and her team LOVE everything carpet and strive to delight customers. Our measuring service, boutique private showroom, and installation process center on customer experience. Why shouldn’t shopping for a custom carpet stair runner be fun and exciting? We call it “the most fun you’ve had buying flooring”! We distinguish ourselves by not having large concrete floors or oversized showrooms with pushy salespeople. Instead, we operate by appointment, ready to greet you at our design table and eager to answer questions, select products, and manage installation timelines.
We are a unique sales consultancy that buys directly from major manufacturers and handles all installation needs. We move furniture, put it back in place, and dispose of old carpet and padding ethically. Our design ideas are endless, and we’re happy to recommend solutions for pets, kids, and messes. Carpets make up more than 50% of all flooring sales in the US, yet we often hear, “I hate carpet.” We hear you. The Carpet Girl focuses on today’s trends, including custom area rugs that frame rooms beautifully. Oddly shaped rooms are our specialty—we believe no home is complete without texture and comfort on the floors. Today’s carpets greatly improve homes, whether making steps safe for grandma, manageable for “Rover,” or quieting squeaky steps. Our projects check the boxes for your family. we check stock, offer transparent pricing, and adhere to the agreed timeline. Leave the carpet stuff to us—just open the door, let our team in, and relax. “The Carpet Girl is proud of our work. Nothing makes us happier than getting a text from a client showing off babies’ first steps on the new carpet,” Dianne shares. “Your home is your castle; no matter how large or small the project is, it’s important to me,” adds Jenn, the project manager. Beyond great carpets, The Carpet Girl dedicates itself to the communities we serve. “If you want to live in a great community, it starts with us,” says Dianne, founder of Mallory’s Army, a foundation dedicated to anti-bullying and suicide awareness. “Location, Location, Location” is pivotal in real estate, but choosing a local, local, local real estate agent is equally crucial. Here’s how a local agent can enhance your home buying or selling experience. With eighteen years as a realtor in the South Orange/ Maplewood community, I’ve seen how local expertise is invaluable. My connection to SOMA, where I’ve raised my family and built my career, equips me with insights that truly benefit clients. A local agent offers deep familiarity with the community, knowing of listings and developments before they reach the broader market. This foresight provides buyers an edge in finding a home that matches their lifestyle. For sellers, I showcase your home’s unique qualities and the neighborhood’s appeal through targeted marketing and open houses. My network from community involvement, including events like the SOMA Art Studio Tour, helps attract the right buyers. Being active in the community has expanded my connections to skilled professionals—contractors, educators, health providers—enhancing SOMA’s appeal. In essence, a local agent offers more than transaction support; they provide a partnership steeped in community values and commitment to your success. HOME DESIGN “Oh wow! It looks great,” said my real estate partner, Kim. “Yeah, the color works really well there. It was hard to find the right shade and balance,” I responded. We were standing in front of a house that we were prepping to put on the market. The seller was a long-time friend and client. I helped her sell another house in South Orange and move to this house in Maplewood a number of years ago. Now she is ready to downsize. “So, you just painted the door?” asked Kim. “Yes,” I replied. “She had the house painted only a couple of years ago, but the door color, also black, just wasn’t happening. It felt like a cave opening.” Kim laughed. “Well, this one’s pretty good. It pops out and catches your eye without being too bright or too vibrant. Like a lemon yellow.” “No, I didn’t want anything that screamed at you, not with the muddied green and muted black trim around it. The idea was to find a color that was contrasting with the
green but also had the same tone and shade to make it more harmonious with the whole house. That’s the key when picking a door color,” I explained. “Yeah, I don’t think a pure color would have worked here,” she replied. I added, “Although if you’re planning to live in the home for a while, then go for it! Paint whatever color brings you joy, so when you walk into your house, you’re happy. But…” “If you want to sell your house, curb appeal is really
important,” Kim chimed in. “Exactement, mon amie!”

INTERIOR DESIGN
SPRING FLING: DECOR TRENDS THAT ARE BLOOMING
DESIGN. BUILD. MAINTAIN
Hey there, decor lovers! It’s May, and the design world is buzzing with intoxicating spring trends. It’s like everyone’s embraced the “pollen-drunk” vibe, and honestly, I’m swept up in it too! Spaces are becoming flirty, playful, and just the right amount of unhinged (in a fabulously chic way, of course). First up, we’ve got pastel maximalism. That’s right, the soft, gentle colors are taking a daring leap—imagine lavender, mint, and peach layers resembling rainbow sherbet couture. Add a splash of dopamine décor (also known as joy-first styling), and your living room transforms into a serotonin-rich confetti cannon every time you enter! Plaster walls are having a major moment—channeling “Did I just move into a Tuscan villa?” levels of drama and elegance. Pair them with curvy furniture (say goodbye to boxy shapes), and your space feels like a cozy sculpture you can relax in comfortably. Also trending are florals gone feral—these oversized, eclectic blooms make a bold statement: “I garden, but only with wine in hand.” And don’t overlook the indoor-outdoor fusion, where rattan and linen stride inside with an air of, “Surprise, we’re sophisticated and refined now.” Oh, and whimsy and humor? They’re definitely back. But did they ever leave? Not in my opinion! Mushroom lamps, cloud mirrors, and frog-shaped candle holders—it’s delightfully weird, and I am utterly obsessed. Spring gives you the green light to zhuzh things up with abandon. So go bold, go pastel, and embrace full-on organic glam! Because, lovelies, life’s far too short for boring walls and uninspired spaces.

Why Pre-Wiring for AV Is the Best Investment You Can’t See When building or renovating a home, most homeowners focus on what they can see — tile, lighting, cabinetry. But one of the smartest investments is what goes behind the walls: pre-wiring for audio-visual (AV) systems. Even if you’re not ready for a full smart home today, pre-wiring during construction gives you the flexibility to grow into one later — without tearing into finished walls or ceilings. What can you pre-wire for? Think in-ceiling speakers, wall-mounted TVs with no visible wires, outdoor audio, motorized shades, door intercoms, and reliable hardwired internet throughout the home. You can also eliminate wall clutter by pre-wiring for lighting control keypads instead of traditional switches. The ideal time to plan for this is before drywall — when electrical and HVAC layouts are being finalized. A good AV designer can collaborate with your builder or interior SMART HOMES START IN THE WALLS AUDIO AND VIDEO
designer to create a clean, future-ready infrastructure that blends seamlessly with your space. Even if you think, “We might add speakers or a theater someday,” that’s enough reason to run the wires now. It’s affordable, practical, and smart. Bottom line: Pre-wiring isn’t about spending more — it’s about planning smarter. Questions about pre-wiring or planning your AV system? We’re happy to help. Recently, the NYTimes ran an article examining the projected increase in construction costs nationally under the new administration. In this week’s column, I’ll take a stab at localizing their analysis. Local projects, unlike construction in other parts of the country, tend to be contained within the shell of an existing home, making them more labor than material-intensive. Looking at the past three years of our billings, the cost of materials averaged 20 percent for projects that utilized existing space. For jobs that added square footage, such as dormers or bump outs, that number rose to 35 percent, which is still relatively low compared to the national average material cost of 65 percent for new construction. Here’s where the equation really diverges comparing local to national: while the Times was able to estimate increased labor costs using only U.S.-born workers, I cannot. In our local workforce, over 90 percent of painters, roofers, drywall hangers, and masonry helpers were born outside the U.S. The number for framers, finish carpenters, and floor installers is nearly as high. The sectors with the highest percentage of U.S.- born workers are electricians, plumbers, and HVAC, which are staffed predominantly by those over the age of 40, with a significant portion of license holders over 50. The Times was able to give an estimate of increased labor costs of 20 percent. The question around here is not what the increased cost will be, but rather who is going to do the work.

THE POWER OF SLEEP
Imagine scrolling through your social media feed and the following advertisement pops up: Revolutionary New Product!
guessed by now, this life-changing “new product” is simply a good night’s sleep. And while great sleep may be elusive for many, it is free and available to all…no prescription required! The benefits of sleep have been known to humanity for thousands of years. In fact, every species of animal sleeps, from the smallest insects to the largest mammals. Some need more sleep – squirrels sleep nearly 16 hours per day. Others need less – giraffes sleep as little as 30 minutes per day in short, 5-minute bursts. And some sleep really weird – dolphins
sleep with only one side of their brain at a time, the other side staying awake to prevent drowning. Yet it is only in the last hundred years that science has begun to penetrate what’s happening inside our brains during sleep, revealing a remarkably complex and critical process essential to every aspect of our physical, mental and emotional well-being. In coming issues we’ll use this space to highlight what science has taught us about sleep, as well as practical solutions for consistently achieving the healthy sleep we need.

FROM THE DOCTOR According to an article published in “Harvard Health Magazine”, 90% of men and 95% of women experience at least one headache every year. Chances are, you’re among those who have recently had a headache. Most headaches aren’t serious and typically don’t last long. Understanding the cause and identifying the specific type of your headache can help eliminate the associated pain. Research shows that spinal manipulation—a primary treatment from a Doctor of Chiropractic—effectively treats tension headaches and headaches originating in the neck. In 2014, the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics (JMPT) reported that chiropractic care interventions improved outcomes for acute and chronic neck pain. It noted increased benefits in several multimodal approach cases. A 2011 JMPT study found that chiropractic care, including spinal manipulation, can improve migraine and cervicogenic headaches. Chiropractors undergo extensive training to assist patients beyond back pain treatment. They understand the impact of tension in the spine and neck on other body parts. Headaches are either primary or secondary. Primary headaches frequently occur and are not caused by underlying conditions. In contrast, secondary headaches result from another condition and typically occur as a consequence rather than a direct trigger. The team at South Orange Chiropractic can help reduce some of your headaches. Our thermal diagnostics and imaging evaluation can determine if you have a chiropractic case. Understanding your headache type offers a path to effective relief. WHAT TYPE OF HEADACHES DO YOU GET?

FROM THE DOCTOR MAY IS ARTHRITIS AWARENESS MONTH: FIGHTING PAIN WITH PHYSICAL THERAPY Arthritis Awareness Month in May highlights a prevalent but often misunderstood condition affecting millions worldwide. Over 58 million adults in the United States struggle with arthritis, making it the nation’s leading disability cause. Yet, despite challenges like joint pain and reduced mobility, hope exists through physical therapy. Arthritis encompasses over 100 conditions affecting joints and tissues, with osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and psoriatic arthritis among the most common. These conditions can cause joint swelling, pain, and reduced range of motion, potentially leading to significant disability. Physical therapists, experts in movement, enhance joint mobility, strengthen supporting muscles, and develop personalized strategies to reduce joint stress. They employ manual therapy, gentle stretching, and techniques like heat/ cold applications, ultrasound, or electrical stimulation to ease discomfort naturally. Specific exercises maintain or restore joint flexibility, making movements easier. Weak muscles strain joints; thus, a tailored strengthening program builds muscle support to protect joints and reduce inflammation. Physical therapy doesn’t end in the clinic; it’s about empowering individuals with tools and knowledge for symptom management. Therapists teach body mechanics, joint protection techniques, and lifestyle changes. Arthritis can alter balance and increase fall risks; thus, therapists address these through balance training and functional movements. If arthritis affects you or a loved one, now is a prime time to explore physical therapy. Consult your healthcare provider for a referral to a licensed physical therapist. With proper care and guidance, reducing pain and improving function is achievable, allowing reclamation of independence.

FINANCIAL FOCUS HOW TO RESPOND TO TARIFFS The Trump Administration announced tariffs on international trade. While uncertainty surrounds the evolution of these policies, many agree that tariffs can increase inflation and spark financial market volatility. How should you respond as a consumer and an investor? AS A CONSUMER: Review your budget. To manage the stress of higher prices on cash flow, reduce costs by dining out less or canceling unused streaming services. Opt for cheaper alternatives, such as generic brands, and negotiate better deals with cable or internet providers. Build an emergency fund. Maintain a fund with three to six months’ worth of living expenses in a low-risk, liquid account. This enables you to handle unexpected costs, like medical bills or a new furnace, and cope with inflation-driven price hikes. Accelerate large purchases. Consider advancing purchases of items likely affected by tariffs, such as automobiles, smartphones, and computers, if your budget allows. AS AN INVESTOR: Diversify. Tariffs target industries differently—autos and electronics more than healthcare and pharmaceuticals. Instead of reacting with hasty trades, build a diverse portfolio with stocks, bonds, and other securities. Diversification provides defense against market volatility from tariffs and other factors, reducing potential losses from downturns. Follow a long-term strategy. Tariffs present a disruptive force, akin to wars or political upheaval. Successful investors maintain focus during such events instead of abandoning the market. While responsive portfolio adjustments may be necessary, a strategy aligned with risk tolerance, time horizon, and goals better equips you for market changes. Addressing tariffs thoughtfully clarifies your financial approach amid uncertainties.
