SHOULDER REPLACEMENT

When patients consider shoulder surgery, they often think about rotator cuff repairs, a more common procedure. However, shoulder replacements are increasingly used to address various shoulder issues. This surgery aims to alleviate pain and joint damage caused by conditions like osteoarthritis, rotator cuff injuries, fractures, rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory conditions, and osteonecrosis. There are three main types of shoulder replacements. An anatomic total shoulder replacement replaces both the ball and socket of the shoulder. In a reverse total shoulder replacement, both parts are replaced, but their positions are reversed, benefiting severe rotator cuff damage. A partial shoulder replacement involves replacing only the ball, recommended for damaged ball joints. After surgery, patients are usually discharged the same day and placed in a sling for 2-6 weeks. While post-surgery pain is common, a nerve block helps manage it. Physical therapy starts immediately, focusing on inflammation control, pain reduction, and range of motion exercises for the shoulder, wrist, and elbow. Once the sling is removed and specific range of motion goals are met, active assisted exercises begin under the supervision of a physical therapist. The final phase centers on returning to normal activities by gradually adding light weights to the rehabilitation routine. Throughout the process, monitoring pain levels and scar management is crucial. Modalities like ice and electrical stimulation can aid in pain management. Adhering to the physical therapist’s guidance is essential for a successful rehabilitation.
