FACES IN THE CROWD

Congratulations to Dave Giles on his exhibition at the re-opening of the Pierro Gallery, located within the newly renovated Baird Arts Center. Here he presents four watercolor paintings that delve into the homeless crisis in the United States, specifically focusing on individuals in the New York City area. These works aim to capture the stark realities, helplessness, and social invisibility of those living without shelter. Through the fluid and contrasting colors of watercolor, he seeks to highlight the urgency of this crisis and evoke a sense of empathy and responsibility among viewers. MEET THE MELINI-GONZALEZ FAMILY

Photography by Jamie Meier

What happens when an aspiring young actress meets a handsome, Doc Marten’s wearing artist at a party at Cal Arts? While this may sound like a teaser for a new RomCom it’s the real-life story of the romance between Broadway, film, and television actress Mandy Gonzalez and her now husband, Douglas Melini. Mandy laughs, “I was at a random party and I saw him standing there looking so cool and I was like ‘You want to dance?’. At the time I was in a garage band playing at a club in Hollywood called Jack’s Sugar Shack, which was a real dive bar. I asked him to come to the gig and he did. He was just so cool while I’m standing on stage in unflattering flannel pajamas. I wasn’t exactly looking like Gwen Stefani – but somehow he thought it was cute.” From there the two started dating and in October will celebrate 20 years of marriage. The couple arrived in NYC in 2000, setting the stage for a journey filled with ambition and success. Mandy, driven by her dreams, dove straight into the challenges of New York’s performing arts scene. “I just kind of hit the pavement. I didn’t have an agent. I had nothing except a dream. My first job came from an open call to become a backup singer for Bette Midler,” Mandy recalls. “She treated us very well. We were on tour and when we got back to New York, she put us all up at the Plaza Hotel...Her generosity stuck with me...It motivated me to save money and move to New York permanently.” After settling with Doug in Brooklyn, she put her mind to acting. By 2001, she was cast “Eli’s Comin’ at the Vineyard Theater.” Mandy won an Obie Award for her performance and her career took off from there. She continues to thrive with award-winning roles on Broadway as well as singing with Pops

orchestras around the country. She is eager to be “Home for the Holidays” this year with a show opening at SOPAC in December. While Mandy pursued her performing career, Douglas Melini represented by the Miles McEnery Gallery, made his name in the visual arts. Melini’s paintings are combinations of patterns and opticality. He often extends his patterns and vibrant colors across the frame, adding a third dimension to the work. Recent solo exhibitions include the Miles McEnery Gallery in NYC and the Schneider Museum of Art in Ashland, Oregon. His work is also featured in private and corporate collections around the world. In 2023, Douglas ventured into set design, contributing to Darrell Grand Moultrie’s “Salsa ‘Til Dawn” for the SMUIN contemporary ballet company in San Francisco. “My husband is my greatest partner. I am so lucky we live here near his family. Aside from how much we both work, family is the root of everything we do. Our daughter Maribelle is amazing. I’m so proud of the way she pursues the performing arts. She goes to classes five days a week at a local studio and takes it very seriously. As a 12-year-old middle schooler, she is really focused on school and performing. She has so many friends and families in South Orange and Maplewood that support her and her passions.” Despite the demands of their everyday lives, Mandy, Douglas, and Maribelle make time for each other, often bonding over their love for food. Mandy says, “Sometimes my daughter has Friday night rehearsals and we get to go to Lorena’s for a drink and a little dinner before pickup. We also love to go to La Villa on Irvington Avenue. We got to know Mario who takes very good care of us. We also love the Reservoir for their pan pizza. You just can’t beat it!” The Gonzalez-Melini family is truly at home in South Orange as an active part of the artistic community living here.

SOMA DREAM TEAM MAKEOVER

This month’s feature is Ann Farrar. Ann Farrar, LMHC, LPC is a psychotherapist specializing in women and girls in South Orange and New York. After a career in theater, Ann shifted to counseling when

in the OHHO Dark Chocolate salted caramel CBN bar. Not only is it great for a good night’s rest, but it can also be that little chocolate fix after dinner read before bed. Julie Perlow, Retail Therapy - Ann is an amazing woman and role model who has re invented herself for the good of society! I am so inspired by her and how she took her early gig as an actress and transformed, trained and educated herself to become a psychotherapist. Her classic features and slender, fit shape were easy to style and she was open to Vintage old Hollywood Glamour fashion with a twist!! Such an inspiration to work with! Loved how her tattoos peak through the elegant glamor, reminding us of her rough edgy parts intermingled with softness. Norah Salzar, Makeup artist - For Ann’s glam, I thought it would be fun to keep her look very monochromatic to vibe with her wardrobe. Fresh skin, dewy and very subtle lips, and a golden tone eyeshadow. Ann was so inspiring because of the work she does, and I wanted her to feel like herself during her shoot. We had a lot of fun getting glammed up for this photoshoot.

she wanted to start and support a family, while getting to use her love of observation and analysis. Since the pandemic, her focus has become treating depression by transforming self worth and efficacy. She believes that women continue to be thisvolatile world’s most valuable resource and supports their bold moves, big and small. She loves guerilla gardening and hiking and lives in South Orange with her husband, daughter, grumpy cat and perfect dog. She can be found online at therapyhelpsnyc.com.

Jill Cohen, TheCannaBossLady - Recently, I met with Anna who sought guidance on getting better sleep and managing neuropathy nerve pain in her leg. For any severe condition like auto-immune, neuropathy, cancer recovery, skin or digestive issues, CBG is the remedy. CBG is the strongest of all cannabinoids, and when formulated

with CBD, it becomes even stronger. I recommended Xula Solo Hemp CBG/CBD 1200mg Tincture oil to Anna, which should be taken under the tongue daily. You can also use it topically by putting some drops on your fingers and massaging sensitive areas. All cannabis products are natural plant-based anti-inflammatories that reduce symptoms of inflammation. For sleep, Anna was interested

In my consultation, I discerned that Ana’s lifestyle required a simplified approach to hairstyle maintenance. Afterward, we captured her in our nook, lit by a single small light for drama. For the denim dress, we chose a geometric wallpaper backdrop and turned an ottoman on its side for a seat. her face and her part, which would brighten her face for a long time to come. To best flatter Anna’s green eyes and olive-toned skin, I chose a neutral warm color to enhance her warmth. For the cut, Iemphasized Ana’s perfect shape face by bringing the length to the collar bone. To create movement and fullness, I used a point-cutting technique on her straight hair, and a slide-cutting technique to create a slight face frame and soft cascade around her face. With this haircut and new highlight color Ana is ready to shine!

Landscape enhancements are small projects that improve a property’s value, appearance, and functionality. These proj ects can be repairs, improvements, or upgrades to an existing landscape, distinct from regular maintenance or large capital improvements. With a professional landscape team, the first step involves a thorough site analysis and assessment. We will join you to walk the property with purpose, looking behind and under all exist ing landscape elements to identify problems and opportunities. We will discuss considerations for improvements, repairs, and upgrades, taking into account safety, security, structures, bud gets, natural light, water sources, disruptions, personal prefer ences, and aesthetics. Next, we will create a master plan listing all ideas and possibil ities. We will work with you to set priorities, acknowledging that landscaping is an ongoing process and not all improvements need immediate completion. We will discuss a program for im plementing a few enhancements each year, creating detailed written proposals with budgets and timelines. We can also help you decide on the best season for each project. Using information from the site analysis, the Slevin Group will help solve all your residential landscaping problems through design and construction. HOME DESIGN “Oh my gosh! That’s so fabulous!” I exclaimed. “Isn’t it great? I love this. Do you think we can do something like this for my bathroom?” asked my client. “Absolutely. It will require a lot of planning and a lot of math, but sure, this would be awesome to do,” I replied. I was standing in the only full bathroom of my client’s house, and she was showing me an inspiration picture for the design she wanted. It was a way to use bathroom tile that I had not seen or tried before, but it was incredible. The design was a total representation of my client—youthful, fun, energetic, and fresh. Fields of crisp white tiles perfectly divided by smaller green tiles. What I loved about this design, aside from the challenge, was that it was different, outside the box, yet in tune with the rest of the house. There are so many tiles to choose from nowadays—thousands of colors and shapes. Most people get choice overload, which hinders the decision-making process. Even with inspiration pictures, sifting through all the green tiles and sizes to find the perfect one is arduous. An experienced designer can bring your inspiration pictures to life and take them to the next level.

INTERIOR DESIGN Never say never... unless it involves the following points. That’s right, decor lovers! Here is my list of “OMG please NEVER do that to your home!”... and please excuse any snarky quips, but I feel rather strongly about these things. 1) NEVER use curtains that have grommets. They look inexpensive and bulky. 2) NEVER use the “matching” throw pillows that come with a sofa or sectional. They’re always stiff and often fall apart. The furniture salesperson will likely tell you they’re perfect with your new piece... but don’t believe that. Just throw them out. 3) NEVER hang one piece of art in the middle of a wall all by itself. It looks odd and it’s just confusing. Artwork tells a story and is meant to enhance a space through color, texture, pattern, and design... but a random piece of art hung alone in the center of a wall looks like a mistake. It has to relate to the things around it. 4) NEVER have more than 2 or 3 picture frames on one surface, and NONE of them should be the same size and orientation. You want to create levels with picture frames so that all of them can be seen. The largest frame in the back, and then the smaller ones appropriately spaced and angled in front. 5) NEVER purchase an entire room off the showroom floor of any furniture store. It’s generic and will look sterile and uninviting. 6) NEVER use a toilet rug. You know, the ones that wrap around the base? Just don’t. They look dated and silly, and not silly in a good way. Want to have fun with your bathroom? Then paint it a BOLD color! Or better yet, put up some funky wallpaper! Next month... Things you should ALWAYS do in your home! This version uses ellipses to indicate pauses or shifts in tone without overdoing it, maintaining a friendly and engaging style.

We want to hear from you!

FROM THE DOCTOR

CHIROPRACTOR

Considering a visit to a chiropractor? You’re not alone. Every year, millions of people, including children, seek chiropractic care for a spectrum of health issues. Chiropractic adjustments are more than just treatments; they tap into the body’s innate healing abilities, deeply embedded in our DNA. This natural capacity to heal isn’t limited to minor injuries like cuts and bruises; it extends to the entire body, both inside and out. Our nervous system plays a crucial role in our overall health, directly influencing every bodily function. When it’s out of balance due to stress or physical misalignment, it can lead to pain, inflammation, and a prolonged ‘fight or flight’ response. Chiropractic care aims to alleviate these issues by correcting subluxations—specific misalignments and distortions in the body that irritate the nervous system. This not only reduces stress on the nervous system but also encourages the body to relax, repair, and ultimately thrive. Subluxations can significantly hinder energy flow from the brain to nerves, affect nerve and joint health, weaken discs and ligaments, and can even lead to decreased blood flow to organs and reduced oxygen to the brain. Chiropractors specialize in adjusting these subluxations, freeing the body from internal stressors. This positions chiropractic care as a valuable complementary treatment alongside other medical interventions, enhancing overall health and well-being. Whether you’re dealing with chronic pain or simply aiming for a healthier lifestyle, chiropractic care offers significant benefits. Chiropractors will evaluate your situation and let you know if chiropractic care is the right fit for you, ensuring you receive tailored support for your health journey.

SHOULDER REPLACEMENT

When patients consider shoulder surgery, they often think about rotator cuff repairs, a more common procedure. However, shoulder replacements are increasingly used to address various shoulder issues. This surgery aims to alleviate pain and joint damage caused by conditions like osteoarthritis, rotator cuff injuries, fractures, rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory conditions, and osteonecrosis. There are three main types of shoulder replacements. An anatomic total shoulder replacement replaces both the ball and socket of the shoulder. In a reverse total shoulder replacement, both parts are replaced, but their positions are reversed, benefiting severe rotator cuff damage. A partial shoulder replacement involves replacing only the ball, recommended for damaged ball joints. After surgery, patients are usually discharged the same day and placed in a sling for 2-6 weeks. While post-surgery pain is common, a nerve block helps manage it. Physical therapy starts immediately, focusing on inflammation control, pain reduction, and range of motion exercises for the shoulder, wrist, and elbow. Once the sling is removed and specific range of motion goals are met, active assisted exercises begin under the supervision of a physical therapist. The final phase centers on returning to normal activities by gradually adding light weights to the rehabilitation routine. Throughout the process, monitoring pain levels and scar management is crucial. Modalities like ice and electrical stimulation can aid in pain management. Adhering to the physical therapist’s guidance is essential for a successful rehabilitation.

LITERACY FOR KIDS NEW MEDIA LITERACY BOOK FOR KIDS

Stephen Chiger from Maplewood and Dan Pereira, recently published “Gram and Gran Save the Summer,” a groundbreaking book published by TeacherGoals. This book introduces a fresh method to teach media literacy to middle-grade students (grades 3-7), directly addressing the challenges brought by New Jersey’s law mandating media literacy education across K-12 curriculums. Their approach combines narrative and puzzles in a style that echoes Encyclopedia Brown and “The Phantom Tollbooth” while encouraging critical thinking about media.

The digital world’s complexities, amplified by misinformation and the rise of artificial intelligence, underscore the importance of this initiative. Despite new laws in New Jersey and California requiring media literacy education, resources for younger students remain scarce. Chiger, leveraging his journalism background, and Pereira fill this gap with a book that educates and entertains, promoting curiosity and joy. Faith Rogow, another child media literacy writer explains, “Put together the wordplay of The Phantom Tollbooth, the imagination of Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, and the problem-solving mysteries of Encyclopedia Brown, make it about media and digital literacy, and you’ve got Gran and Gram Save the Summer. This book is a must-have for every middle-grade library.” In the midst of heightened media attention to global events and our federal election cycle, it’s a particularly great time to buy a copy of this timely book for your family on Amazon.com.

COALITION ON RACE Talking to Children about Race Parents play a crucial role in shaping their children’s understanding of race and racism, and in helping them develop a healthy racial identity. Open and honest conversations are critical, though they can be challenging to navigate. It’s important to start these conversations early as children internalize beliefs about race at a very young age. Even infants notice racial differences, and sometimes showing a preference for a person whose race matches their own. By age 10, children’s beliefs about race may be deeply ingrained. Intention and consistency are key. This approach helps your child develop a nuanced understanding of race and to critically analyze messages from media and peers. Moreover, engaging in regular, proactive conversations about race lays the groundwork for anti-racist attitudes and actions. Don’t wait for your child to bring up the topic, instead tailor discussions to their needs and to developmental stages. While you don’t need to be an expert, you do need to examine your own biases, your understanding of racism, and your feelings about racial inequity. Show your child your willingness to grow and learn together. Seek out age-appropriate books and media at your local library. These conversations can bring up strong feelings, so allow space for emotions related to injustices. Teach your child the most effective ways to intervene when they witness or experience racist speech or behavior. FINANCIAL FOCUS

INVESTMENTS

Summertime is almost here, prompting many to plan vacations. However, it’s vital to keep your investments active. To prevent your investments and financial strategy from stalling, follow these steps: • Regularly monitor your investments. Evaluate performance carefully without comparing it to market indices like the S&P 500. Instead, use benchmarks relevant to your unique situation to ensure your portfolio aligns with your growth and retirement goals. • Invest with purpose. Develop a long-term investment strategy based on your financial objectives, risk tolerance, and time horizon to steer your portfolio toward desired outcomes like retirement and other long-term goals. • Strategize your investments. Align your investment choices with specific goals, such as retirement savings in IRAs and 401(k)s, education funding in 529 plans, or short-term goals like weddings or vacations. Adopting a goals-based approach can ensure your portfolio serves your intentions effectively. Maintain diligence with your investment strategy, regularly assessing and adjusting as needed. By staying proactive, you can safeguard your financial future while enjoying a more positive outlook.
