Meet Akashi. He’s 4 years old, a rescue from Puerto Rico, and is a mix of husky, shepherd, chow-chow, and chihuahua. He’s a friend to many. He was discovered in the arms of a “foster parent” on the streets in Puerto Rico and rescued. We adopted him when he was 10 months old. Akashi Yomo is named after a Japanese whisky we love (Akashi) and Yomo is a beloved Puetro Rican reggaeton singer. This is our attempt to honor his heritage.

THE GALDI FAMILY

Photography by Jamie Meier

The Galdi family’s journey began in 2006 when Pavitra and Antony met through a mutual friend (during Pavitra’s senior year at Boston University). After graduation, Pavitra moved to NYC where Antony lived and soon their friendship turned into more and they started their lives a couple. In 2012, the couple had a week-long wedding celebration in Turks and Caicos, honoring their love with both an Indian and American ceremony. They continued to grow their life together in Brooklyn, where they welcomed their first child, a boy named Kai. The family is proud of their mixed cultural backgrounds and appreciates the range of cultures among residents of Maplewood. The Galdi’s celebrate festivals like Holi and Diwali and enjoy eating Indian food together that Antony cooks. They also plan to travel to India to visit Pavitra’s grandparents. Like many, the Galdi’s experienced their fair share of hardships over the past few years. After moving to Maplewood, they quickly learned that Rumi was not hitting her milestones and their journey into early intervention began. They eventually discovered that Rumi has a rare genetic neuro developmental disorder called USP7. Despite the challenges, the family has remained positive and hopeful, and Rumi is making great progress with the help of therapy, doctors, and the unwavering love and support of her family and community. Her brother, Kai is her biggest cheerleader. He adores his sister and to him, “She’s just Rumi. The same old Rumi that she’s always been:

a happy girl who loves to watch Blippi, dance around the house, and play with dolls.” The family has found support and a sense of community here from a group that a local mom started on facebook called SOMA Peer Support and Action Network for IEP/504/Ei families. Pavitra shared, “There are many neurodivergent children that live here and they should have an equal space in SOMA. The members of this Facebook group are doing meaningful work and making a difference to many people here in town. We are so proud to be a part of it.” Pavitra plans to return to work in a school one day, but for now, she is focused on being an advocate for her daughter and fighting to get her the opportunities she deserves. The Galdi family’s story is a beautiful testament to the power of resilience and community. In Maplewood, they found a place to call home, where they can raise their children within a varied and accepting neighborhood. Pavitra reflects, “I would have never imagined this is where I’d be or what my life would be like - if you asked me 10 years ago - but this is exactly where we are meant to be. Maplewood definitely feels like home.” They credit their ability to overcome challenges to their close-knit family and the wonderful people they have met along the way.

CREATING A POLLINATOR GARDEN IN SOUTH ORANGE/MAPLEWOOD

Q: WHAT IS A POLLINATOR GARDEN? A: A pollinator garden is designed to contain plants with large, compound inflorescent flowers to provide food and shelter to animals (bees, birds, butterflies, moths, wasps, bats, and small mammals) that pollinate plants that support the local ecosystem. Q: WHAT ARE SOME OF THE BENEFITS OF A POLLINATOR GARDEN? A: While there are many benefits to a pollinator garden, the biggest for the busy homeowner is the low maintenance they require while still adding beauty to your landscape. Q: WHAT POLLINATOR PLANTS ARE NATIVE TO SOUTH ORANGE/MAPLEWOOD? A: The plants primarily used to create a pollinator garden in the South Orange/Maplewood area are Joe Pye Weed, Milkweed, Golden Rod, Salvia, Agastache, Butterfly Bush, Cone Flower, Daisy. Q: WHY SHOULD I CONSIDER PLANTING A POLLINATOR GARDEN? A: You should consider planting a pollinator garden not only for the beauty it will create in your landscape, but for the essential role pollinator insects play in the success of any garden whether it be a flower garden or a vegetable garden. Q: HOW IS A POLLINATOR GARDEN CREATED? A: A pollinator garden is created by arranging the same variety of plants in groups of 3 to 5 in a minimum space of at least 25 square feet. Plants are then selected based upon the environment of sun or shade, planted, and mulched to keep them moist. The plants are then kept healthy by deadheading old flowers and watering liberally. Pesticides should never be used in a pollinator garden.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH

BLUEBERRY COBBLER Prep time: 15 mins • Cook time: 40 mins Servings: 6

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees and lightly spray a 1½ qt baking dish with non-stick baking spray. 2. Blueberry Filling 3. Toss the blueberries with the remaining ingredients. Stir evenly to coat and pour into the prepared pan. 4. Cobbler Topping 5. Whisk together the flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt. Add the butter and mix with your fingers until you have coarse meal. 6. Stir in the cream until just combined. 7. Drop six even scoops on top of the blueberry mixture (They’ll be just touching.) Brush the tops with the melted butter and sprinkle with sugar. 8. Place the baking dish on a lined baking sheet to catch any drips while it bakes. 9. Bake until the cobbler is risen, golden brown, and the blueberries are bubbling about 35-40 mins. Cover the top lightly with foil if it begins too brown to deeply.

This is the BEST EVER blueberry cobbler. Juicy blueberries in a gloriously glossy sauce topped with tender biscuits with a buttery, sugary crust. Blueberries at their peak are sweet and flavorful.

10.Cool on a wire rack until still warm but cool enough to eat, about 10 mins. 11.Serve warm or at room temperature, topped with vanilla ice cream if desired. Loosely cover the cobbler with aluminum foil and store at room temp for up to two days. RECIPE NOTES • Don’t over-mix the biscuit topping. Over-handling can make it chewy and more dense instead of light and crumbly. • You can substitute flour for cornstarch, but cornstarch definitely produces a silkier sauce. • Don’t skip brushing the biscuit topping with butter and sugar! It gives it a sweet, crunchy, golden crust.

INGREDIENTS

BLUEBERRY FILLING 2 pints blueberries (about 4 cups) 1/4 cup sugar (1/3 cup if your blueberries aren’t as naturally sweet) 1 Tbsp lemon juice 1 tsp vanilla 1/4 cup corn starch 1/4 tsp kosher salt pinch of nutmeg

COBBLER TOPPING 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour 2 tsp baking powder 1/4 cup sugar ½ tsp kosher salt 2 oz unsalted butter (½ stick) 3/4 cup heavy cream 1 Tbsp unsalted butter, melted 1 Tbsp turbinado or granulated sugar *vanilla ice cream for serving

FROM THE DOCTOR

SPINAL DECOMPRESSION

Your spine is an intricate and complicated piece of the body. When injuries happen, it can greatly affect ones lift and activity level. There are multiple treatment options for spinal injury. These include surgery, injections, braces, physical therapy, and spinal decompression. We will focus on spinal decompression which is offered at certain PT or chiropractic centers. It is a way to non-invasively treat cervical and lumbar stenosis as well as disc bulges. Spinal decompression can treat both cervical and lumbar injuries and, again, is noninvasive. The therapy works to stretch the spine, using a spinal decompression table or other device, to create negative pressure and space within the disc to allow disc fluid to move back into place. This creates an environment in which the disc can receive more nutrients and therefore heal itself more quickly and effectively. Generally, decompression treatments last 20 minutes from start to finish. Tension from the device is weight based and patient specific. In most cases, it takes about 20-28 sessions over a 5-7 week period for maximum results. For most spinal injuries, a personalized combination of exercises, physical therapy modalities, and the spinal decompression will create the best results in the shortest amount of time. Set up a one-on-one consultation with one of our doctors to determine if you are a candidate for decompression.

FRANK McGEHEE Former Maplewood Mayor and Democratic leader Frank McGehee announced his run for Assembly in New Jersey’s new 28th Legislative District (now representing South Orange, Maplewood, the South and West Wards of Newark, Irvington and Hillside). SOMA was redistricted from the 27th to the 28th Legislative District. Assembly person Mila Jasey announced she will not seek re-election. There are three Democratic candidates running for two seats. “This election is a new opportunity for residents to think critically about who will best represent them in Trenton. I’m running because voters need change and experienced leadership,” said McGehee. He added, “The Covid pandemic changed everything about how we live, learn, work and play. Let’s accelerate change so our municipalities can thrive - not stick with politics as usual.” New Jersey is the only state in the United States where candidates running for state office are endorsed by the county. Candidates backed by the county generate higher funding and usually win their elections because voters don’t take the time to get to know their candidates. Instead, voters simply “vote the county line.” The county is banking on this so that their candidates feel obligated to put the county’s interests first. McGehee explained, “Our residents deserve forward thinking leaders who are about the people first, not political machines at the county or municipal level,” He concluded, “Vote Line B for Frank McGehee for Assembly on Tuesday, June 6.”

REAL ESTATE SOUTH ORANGE GASLIGHTS

South Orange’s gaslights may be the most enduring hallmark of our community. South Orange has over 1,400 gas lamps, more than any other township in the United States. Ray Kienzle has maintained South Orange’s gas lights for the past 35 years. Ray, who is now semi-retired from PSEG, talks about what it’s like to be a lamp lighter and the long-time friends he made working here. “There was a lady on Hillside that used to make me apple pies,” Ray

laughed. “I once swapped the clear, plexiglass globe of a gaslight with a frosted one to celebrate a couple’s 50th wedding Anniversary. The milk glass made it more romantic, they liked that.” Another time, Ray used the figurine of a baseball batter, taken from a baseball trophy and mounted it on top of a gaslight for a young little leaguer. Ray explained, “I told him, ‘that’s your lamp’. The kid must be thirty now but I think he must remember that.” It’s ironic that Edison invented the light bulb in nearby Menlo Park but South Orange decided to keep its old style gas lamps. Thanks to Ray, our historic gaslights continue to add charm and warmth to our South Orange neighborhood.

HOME DESIGN “There are a lot of cool chairs in this house,” exclaimed my real estate partner Kim Kelly, as we wandered through a home during a broker open house. “There certainly is. That one’s an Eames Lounge chair and it looks fabulous in purple velvet! So classic mid-century. This is a well-curated house.”

“They did a great job putting it all together,” Kim complimented. “They certainly did. I’m sure it took a long time to find all these pieces. But that’s the beauty of it. I’m sure if you asked the homeowner about any one of these furnishings, they could tell you the story about where they found it or how they came to get it.” “You don’t get that buying everything out of a big box store,” Kim added. “Right!” I responded, “There’s a number of great shops around us to buy stuff that you’ll fall in love with.”

“What do you mean curated?” Kim asked.

“Well, it’s when you take your time and carefully hand pick each piece. Remember how I said not to forget art in a home?”

“Yes,” replied Kim, rolling her eyes.

“A well-curated home goes beyond just the art. It’s furniture and accessories too. Your couch, rugs, vases, tables, and chairs,” I said, pointing to all the beautiful furnishings that surrounded us.

“Like the Maplewood Mercantile,” said Kim.

“Exactly. They have amazing stuff there,” I added.

“And a curated home will help you fall in love with your space,” Kim said brightly. I could only smile... “

FINANCIAL FOCUS NEW LAW MAY OFFER FINANCIAL OPPORTUNITIES The SECURE 2.0 Act, which recently passed, covers many areas that may affect your financial decisions. Here are some changes that may interest you, depending on your circumstances: If you’re a retiree, the age for required minimum distributions (RMDs) from your traditional IRA and 401(k) has increased from 72 to 73, effective this year. Additionally, the penalty for missed RMDs has been reduced from 50% to 25%. You now have new options for qualified charitable distributions and can make a one time qualified charitable distribution of up to $50,000 to entities that previously couldn’t receive them. If you’re still working, you can now take your employer’s matching and other contributions on a Roth basis if you participate in a 401(k) or similar plan. If you’re a business owner, you may now claim a startup credit covering 100% of the administrative costs of opening a 401(k) plan, up to $5,000 for each of the first three years of the plan. You may also be eligible for a tax credit based on employee matching or profit-sharing contributions. Additionally, you can earn a tax credit of up to $500 for three years if you make military spouses eligible for a retirement plan. These are just some of the provisions in the SECURE 2.0 Act that may be relevant to your situation. You should contact your financial and tax advisors to determine how you may be affected by this legislation and how you could take advantage of it. Edward Jones, its employees and financial advisors cannot provide tax or legal advice. You should consult your attorney or qualified tax advisor regarding your situation.

CANNABOSS LADY MAPLEWOOD’S FIRST WOMAN OWNED DISPENSARY

Maplewood Township is set to welcome its first solely woman-owned cannabis business later this year. “Elevated” by The Cannaboss Dispensary will offer consumers a luxury dispensary

experience and will be located adjacent to the current CBD shop on 9 Highland Place in downtown Maplewood. The product selection includes craft cannabis from local cultivators like the brand Miss Grass, luxury products from My Bud Vase, Puffco, and Her Highness NYC. It will also include small batch, third-party tested, non-GMO, full spectrum CBD made by Boss Ladies. Founder and owner Jill Cohen is a cannabis pioneer who has been researching the medicinal power of the hemp plant for decades. On a personal level, it helped her heal from an abusive childhood. In addition, Cohen spent two years as the Managing Director of The Emerald Magazine and made it her personal mission to advocate for cannabis legalization. “I am thrilled to be expanding my business and offering a new destination for New Jersey residents to discover the best craft cannabis that New Jersey has to offer. Elevated is going to be a plush, welcoming environment that offers a higher level of wellness,” shared Jill Cohen. TheCannaBossLady was founded in 2021 as a women owned CBD shop in the tri-state area. It offers a highly curated marketplace for online or in-person shoppers. TheCannaBossLady educates and empowers women to make knowledgeable choices when selecting cannabinoid products. Every purchase donates to a BIPOC non-profit. HOMEBUYER INITIATIVE

BLACK AND NON-WHITE HISPANIC WGEL

The historical racial inequities in homeownership that are still present in Essex County today threaten to constrain the racial diversity of South Orange and Maplewood. In fact, non-Hispanic, white households in Essex County New Jersey are 41% more likely to own a home than their Black and non-white Hispanic counterparts. This gap is greater today than it was fifty years ago, prior to the passage of the Fair Housing Act. In an effort to close this gap, the South Orange-Maplewood Community Coalition on Race recently launched a new program: the Wealth Gap Equalizer Loan (WGEL). With the goal of supporting a new generation of Black and non-white Hispanic homebuyers in SOMA, WGEL is a “Special Purpose Credit Program” that offers qualifying first-time home-buyers loans up to $7,500. These interest free, unsecured loans enable historically disadvantaged families to successfully compete in the home buying process by providing supplemental cash for purchase offers, down payments, closing costs, legal fees and other related transactions. In collaboration with HUD-approved counseling agencies, mortgage lenders, and real estate professionals serving SOMA, the Community Coalition on Race all WGEL loan applicants receive counseling, referrals, and reliable support throughout the application and home buying process. These loans feature a five-year repayment plan (with no early penalties) and are designed to provide homebuyers with their funds as quickly as possible, if approved. To learn more and to apply for the Wealth Gap Equalizer Loan, go to https://choosesoma.com/move/WGEL.

REAL ESTATE FOR YOUR BUSINESS

Thinking of starting your own business in a retail store, office or warehouse? Moving to a new location or extending the lease in your current space? Here are three of the most important terms to address during your commercial lease negotiations: 1. Term: Lease terms vary in length, depending on the type of business, location, use and market conditions. Confirm that you’re comfortable with the number of years of your lease and plan for contingencies in case your business changes. For example, would you like the right to expand into the neighboring space if that tenant moves out? Can you assign the lease or sublet the space if your needs change? It’s important to think about the possible scenarios when making your offer to a potential landlord. 2.Rent and Additional Rent: To properly budget your expenses, confirm your fixed rent amount and note what it includes. Are utilities included or billed? Landlords often charge “additional rent,” which may include tenant’s share of common area expenses (in retail leases), or portions of the landlord’s annual real estate tax payments (in office leases). 3. Personal Guaranty: Most landlords want a business owner to personally guaranty all of the tenant’s obligations (monetary and otherwise) under the lease for the entire term of the lease. Instead of giving a full guaranty, try to provide a “Good Guy Guaranty.” It’s still a personal guaranty, but it caps your personal liability to the rent owed on the date your business surrenders the space and gives the keys back to the landlord. In most cases, landlords ask for 3-6 months written notice. When hiring an attorney to review and negotiate your lease, make sure the attorney is well-versed in the subtleties of commercial leasing. Leases last many years and have language that could create long term consequences for your business. You want to make sure that you are protected for the life of the lease.

MAPLEWOOD GARDEN CLUB

ANNUAL PLANT SALE

This Spring the Maplewood Garden Club (MGC) host its 86th Annual Plant Sale at the Maplewood Community Pool on May 11, 12, and 13. Known around the state as the best plant sale of the year, the MGC has been bringing great plants to the people of NJ since FDR was in the White House. The annual plant sale is the only fundraiser held by MGC each year. It offers exceptional plant material, often unusual or rare, below market prices to the public. The club has long term relationships with some of the best growers in the country. Under the guidance of expert and master gardeners, dedicated volunteers begin potting-up bare root perennials mid-winter to grow them on for the sale. They nurture them in the MGC nursery garden cold frames and municipal greenhouses. Vegetables, herbs, annuals and hanging baskets are purchased from local growers and delivered directly to the sale site. This ensures the highest quality plant material. Specialty annuals and tender perennials are propagated by Club members adding hard to find varieties. Friendly and knowledgeable Club members are on hand to give help and advice. The funds raised enable MGC to support ongoing projects and activities including: Scholarships to Columbia High School Seniors and Rutgers University Students, the Dickens Village Conservatory, the Durand-Hedden herb garden, the Hilton Rain Garden, Maplewood Library book donations, Maplewood Township greenhouses, the Memorial Garden behind Town Hall, holiday decorations at the railroad station, and numerous gardens around town. ANDRES TRUJILLO Village Pickup Truck Rentals is a locally owned and operated pickup truck rental business that serves the SOMA and Millburn neighborhoods. The company was founded in 2023 by a local resident, Andy Trujillo, who noticed a problem in the community. He explained, “Many families in the area don’t have access to a pickup truck, and renting one can be a hassle. Village Pickup Truck Rentals was created to solve these problems.” MEET THE MERCHANT

Village Pickup is unique in its focus on convenience. The company offers transparent, flat-rate pricing, and you can rent a truck for as little as two hours, or a full day. There are no complicated fees or additional mileage charges, and you can use the truck for any job. After booking, the company texts you a local pickup location in SOMA, and when you’re done, you can just park and lock the truck in your driveway. The company will pick up the truck for its next job, so there’s no need to shuttle back to drop it off. What makes Andy especially proud of the business is the fact that his 7-year-old son has taken a big interest in the company. He shared, “He’s been eager to help hand out flyers and think about ways to spread the Village Pickup name. His excitement to serve our community has multiplied mine one hundred times over!” The Trujillo family is also active in the local community, volunteering their time at school and contributing to the Maplewood community fridge. As the company continues to grow, it’s clear that it will remain committed to serving its local community and providing a high level of convenience and customer service.
