15 years ago, Mike Choi and his family made the migration from NYC to Maplewood, NJ in search of a bigger backyard, and a welcoming community with a cool, creative vibe. As a young boy, raised in diplomatic circles, Mike lived and traveled all over the globe. He loved and devoured all things having to do with world cultures, especially pop culture! Mike

spent much of his youth creating fake movie posters, album covers, and drawing comic books of super heroes such as Captain Korea! Early on, he knew that he wanted to be a graphic designer. Communicating and connecting with the world is something that Mike has always lived by and was the driving force for him starting his own graphic and web design business in the 90s - Open Mind Design. With over 30+ years of NYC ad agency experience, Open Mind Design specializes in small business start ups and identity programs. For Mike and his wife and business partner, Kathleen Hong, Open Mind Design is all about communication. They help businesses fine tune their marketing and communication strategy to ensure their message truly resonates with the target audience. For Mike, it’s not only about great visuals, or what is trendy, but also about helping the client send the right message that will excite, motivate, engage and connect. Mike particularly enjoys projects with a purpose or cause. He recently worked with SOMA Cross Cultural Works www.crosculturalworks.org on their design for Lunar Fest NJ and updated their brand identity. Promoting cultural awareness and in particular, Asian American culture, is something he and his family are passionate about. Ultimately, it doesn’t matter what his client is marketing, Mike brings all of his experience and expertise to the project. All projects are treated the same, regardless of the client’s size or budget or how unconventional the product or service. That’s where the name “Open Mind Design” came from. You will find Mike around town, grabbing food at Tandoori Chef II, or a drink at Fox and Falcon, or playing a gig with one of his many rock projects. —Allison Kim Lord, SOMA Cross Cultural Works
