MEET AMUSAN-ZENG FAMILY
Photography by Jamie Meier
Introducing the Amusan-Zeng Family: A Tale of Love, Family, and Community Meet Abiola Amusan, lovingly referred to as Abi, and Lilan Zeng, the dynamic duo behind the innovative AV Luxury Design business. Their journey began over a decade ago when they first crossed paths at work, quickly forming a friendship that blossomed into something more. Abiola fondly recalls the pivotal moment, on his last day of work at the firm, when Lilan left him a heartfelt note opening the door to extend the friendship. “That note, now framed, takes pride of place in our living room bookcase, symbolizing the foundation of our relationship built on friendship,” Abiola reminisces with a smile. After marrying in 2022, the couple made a life-changing decision to move to Maplewood. It was their realtor who introduced them to the community. Abiola recalls the serendipitous encounter that led them to Maplewood, saying, “We explored the area and felt it really spoke to us. It felt like fate, or luck, that brought us here.” The Amusan-Zeng family found their perfect abode in Maplewood, embracing the strong

sense of community and welcoming atmosphere that make it a cherished place to call home. Adding to the charm of their family are their lively 5-month-old twins, Allison and Everett, who have quickly become the center of their world. Abiola lovingly describes his children, “Allison is fierce, opinionated, and very passionate at just 5 months old. Her facial expressions make you laugh and wonder what she would say if she could speak. Everett is sweet, charismatic, and a natural charmer, always ready with a smile that melts your heart.” The twins bring joy and laughter to their parents’ lives, creating a lively and loving atmosphere in their Maplewood home. As they navigate the joys of parenthood and entrepreneurship, the Amusan-Zeng family finds solace in the tight-knit Maplewood community. Lilan has recently returned to her corporate HR sales job post-maternity leave, balancing work with assisting Abiola at AV Luxury Design and caring for the twins. Abiola is actively involved in the Maplewood Village Alliance, contributing to the vibrant community life that makes Maplewood truly special. From their serendipitous beginnings to building a thriving business and nurturing a growing family, the Amusan-Zengs embody the essence of love, dedication, and community spirit. Their story is a testament to the power of friendship, love, and shared dreams that continue to shape their family journey.

SOMA DREAM TEAM MAKEOVER
This month’s feature is Jessica Frank.
Julie Perlow, Retail Therapy - So I am a devout Whiskey & Sugar groupie, which means styling Jess was a big thrill for me!! Her voice is magical, whether she’s singing Country-infused songs like “Jolene” or popular R&B remakes such as local legend Lauryn Hill’s “Killing Me Softly”. We collaborated well and agreed on a free-spirited rocker look. Similar to other performers
Jess Frank and her husband Daryl moved to SOMA 13 years ago. They have two daughters, Sienna (6th grade, SOMS) and Dylan (4th grade, SMS). Jess runs Wheelhouse
Event Solutions, specializing in non-profit fundraising events and community engagement. With friends’ support, she turned her COVID hobby of singing into a frequent gig with her cover band duo, Whiskey, and Sugar, alongside Short Hills resident Matt Stone. They perform at local venues like Fox and Falcon, Village Hall, and Lorena’s. Check them out at @whiskeyandsugarnj on IG. Jill Cohen, TheCannaBossLady - I had the pleasure of meeting with Jess for a cannabis/ CBD consultation. Her main focus was how to have a great time this summer at the beach, music festivals, and Maplewoodstock without alcohol but still feel a buzz and be part of the party. I recommended a variety of THC/CBD drinks with different milligram levels and methods of consumption, including powders, seltzers, and cannabis liqueurs. These drinks are sure to give you a fantastic summer without the drawbacks of a hangover or extra calories. Let the good times roll!
I’ve styled in the past, it’s important that their authenticity is expressed in their outfits. I believe that happened with
Jess’s wardrobe choices, especially how she rocks leather accents and gold boots! Brianna Chin, Makeup artist - Jessica already looked like a rock star when she walked in, with her new edgy
haircut and black leather jacket. Inspired by the wardrobe, I custom-mixed a lip for her with loose pigments and clear gloss, creating a unique, goldy, coppery, slightly burgundy color that she wore for most of the looks. She wore it gorgeously! Later, I added black eyeliner to just the inner and outer corners of her eyes for a touch of boldness.

Yoni Kreger, YK Salon - We love nothing more than creating fresh styles for creators, and Jessica was no exception. For this mom-by-day, rocker-by-night, we wanted to create a look for Jess that expressed her whole self. We first sought to create a color that would naturally compliment her skin tone and gorgeous blue eyes; some simple highlights, particularly framing her face, brighten her overall look without requiring frequent maintenance. For the cut, we created an edgier look befitting someone who rocks the mic. A square shape with longer pieces in the front and shorter ones in the back creates volume without fuss.
Lee Seidenberg Photography - Despite being a singer and regular performer, Jessica was nervous in front of the camera, but that soon dissipated once we got into the groove. Julie provided a fantastic wardrobe, perfectly matching Jessica’s edge. We
created a camo background for the camo jacket using colored paper, thanks to my assistant Rowan, who spent an hour cutting it. I chose one of my favorite looks for the black dress and feather shawl—a high-contrast black and white. A simple V-flat and window light were perfect for the studded denim jacket and lace tank shot.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH
INSTRUCTIONS
TOMATO GALETTE Prep Time: 40 mins + 1 hr 20 mins chilling time Bake Time: 45 mins • Servings: 6
• GALETTE DOUGH • Combine the flour, parmesan, Italian seasoning, pepper, sugar, and salt in a food processor fitted with a steel blade. Pulse a few times to mix. • Add the cold, chopped butter and pulse about 10 -12 times until the butter is cut into the flour mixture and its pea size. • Pour in the ice water and pulse a few more times until a ball begins to form. Do not overmix. Dough will not be completely blended and will come together on the counter. • Scrape dough onto the counter and form into a flat disc. Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least an hour or overnight. MAKE THE GALETTE • Remove the dough from the refrigerator and allow it warm up just until it’s soft enough to roll out. • While the dough is resting, heat the oil over medium heat in a medium sauté pan. Add the onion and sauté for 3 mins. Add the garlic and sprinkle of salt. Continue to cook until the onions and garlic are just golden, another 3-4 mins. • Remove from the heat and allow the onion mixture to cool to room temperature.
INGREDIENTS
• Roll out the dough on a well-floured surface into a 15-inch round and trim the edges. • Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. • Move the pastry round onto a parchment lined sheet pan and spread the onion/garlic mixture over the pastry, leaving about 1 1/2 inches exposed around the edges. • Next, cover the onion mixture with the cheddar cheese and 1/3 cup parmesan. Sprinkle with herbs, then layer tomato slices over top, slightly overlapping. • Sprinkle tomatoes with remaining tablespoon of parmesan, 1 tsp of chives, and a dash of salt and pepper. • Fold edges and pleat border around filling, leaving the center exposed. Don’t worry about perfect folds, it’s meant to have a rustic appearance. • Place the unbaked galette into the refrigerator for about 15-20 minutes to chill. • Remove, brush edges with the heavy cream and bake for about 40 mins or until filling is bubbling and crust is golden brown. • Slice and serve hot or at room temperature.
Galette Dough 1 1/2 cups all purpose flour 1/4 cup parmesan cheese, grated 1 tsp Italian seasoning, dried 1/2 tsp freshly ground black pepper 1 Tbsp sugar 1 tsp kosher salt 5 oz unsalted butter, very cold and diced (10 Tbsp) 1/4 cup ice water Tomato Filling 1 Tbsp olive oil 1 medium onion, cut in half and thinly sliced into half moons 2 cloves garlic, minced 6 oz white cheddar cheese, shredded or grated 1/3 cup parmesan cheese, grated (+1 Tbsp) 2 tsp fresh thyme, minced 1 Tbsp fresh parsley, minced 1 Tbsp fresh chives, minced (+1 tsp) 2 large tomatoes, thinly sliced into rounds Kosher salt and pepper 2 Tbsp heavy cream

I am a proud sponsor of Maplewoodstock and have been for the past nine years. The family-friendly festival started back in 2004 and now attracts over 7,500 people. This summer, Maplewoodstock will be held on July 13th and 14th at Memorial Park. The festival features a diverse lineup of musical performances spanning various genres, including rock, folk, jazz, blues and more. This year’s headliners are REMEMBER JONES, an energetic singer and band leader who has played with the likes of Bruce Springsteen, and George Clinton. DANIEL DONATO, a singer/song writer of a new kind of roadhouse rock that he calls cosmic country and NATION BEAT, a mashup of Brazilian and New Orleans jazz that gets you dancing. In addition to the good-music-vibe, Maplewoodstock offers a colorful art and crafts fair where local artisans display and sell their creations including jewelry, clothing and artwork. Food trucks and a beer garden keep attendees sated and hydrated. The Kid Zone bustles with bouncy rides, face painting and interactive games for children to be engaged and entertained. Back in August of 1969, the original Woodstock was an incredible gathering of people that shared a common experience of music, community and togetherness. Maplewoodstock shares the same idea of unity, spirit and pride. Come get your groove on and join me at the celebration.

They do use crushed quartz crystals and then mix it with resin and pigments to make it look like marble,” I explained. “So, quartzite is from the ground and quartz is from a factory,” she summed up. “Exactly!” I said, then… “Look, more slabs of Taj Mahal!” We quickly rushed off to claim them! The disappointed small crowd dispersed and scattered quickly into the maze, hoping to claim their own prize. I was in Reliance Surfaces, a giant warehouse filled with large slabs of stones. I was with my clients who were shopping for countertops. It seemed that on this Saturday morning, we, and many others, had come to buy slabs of Taj Mahal quartzite, a gorgeous natural stone that has seen a meteoric rise in popularity and a drop in inventory. “Are all these quartzite stones?” asked my client. “Oh no,” I answered, “some are quartz.” “Is there a difference?” she inquired. “Oh yeah, big difference,” I said as I launched into my explanation, “Quartzite is a natural stone that comes straight from the ground. INTERIOR DESIGN Greetings Decor Lovers!!! As promised, here are a few of my MUST tips for elevating the decor in your home… in a cost effective way!!!! ~ A fresh coat of paint is miraculous!!! It doesn’t really matter what color it is, as long as it’s a nice paint job (meaning no cracks in the walls, no discoloration in spots or dark areas from old artwork). ~ Electronic cords... Get cord covers!!! Having a crap-ton of cords exposed throughout a space just looks messy and unkempt. You can buy cheap plastic cord covers and paint them the same color as the wall! Or strategically place a basket or plant or ANYTHING over a huge heap of wires. Just make it disappear! ~ Remotes... Get a nice decorative box for your coffee table.... and hide your many different remotes in it when they aren’t in use. ~ HUGE artwork... artwork in general can be expensive... but if you have a lot of wall space, and don’t want to purchase a lot of small pieces to make a gallery wall, then go buy a HUGE blank canvas (or find a huge piece at a Garage Sale and paint over it with white), then grab a few paints, and doodle some shapes onto it! Modern art is all about intention and confidence... have a little fun in your backyard... Jackson Pollock style... or go with shapes like Kandinsky! If it’s big and bold and HUNG on your wall, everyone will be impressed!! ~ Get rid of dead plants... If you do NOT have a green thumb, please use faux plants. A bunch of dying plants just sucks the energy out of a space. But nice, full, fresh looking real or faux plants always take up the elegance factor! ~ Curtain Panels.... adding curtain panels to windows will DEFINITELY make the space look prettier. Hang them as high as you can (right below the ceiling trim)… and 6-10” out from the window frame! These are just a few of my tips… but if you are having a design dilemma, and you’d like me to address in next month’s column - EMAIL ME!!!! Kate@DecorWhore.com

FROM THE DOCTOR A study in the Journal of Manipulative Therapeutics (JMPT) discovered that chiropractic care effectively relieves a common type of vertigo. VertIgo encompasses various disorders marked by dizziness, lightheadedness, or a sensation of movement in you or the surroundings. The inner ear houses a structure consisting of three fluid-filled loops known as the Labyrinth. When your head moves, the fluid shifts, activating nerves that inform your brain of the movement. Your brain maintains your body’s balance using this data in conjunction with visual input, auditory cues, and nerve signals from the joints. Any disruption in these pathways, along with medications, chemical imbalances, or other illnesses, can trigger vertigo. Cervical vertigo, the second most common diagnosis, originates from issues in the upper cervical vertebrae. Altered joint function in the neck can send inaccurate signals to the brain, leading to cervical vertigo. Thermal imaging evaluation can help identify neck-related causes of vertigo. Consulting a chiropractic professional can assist in addressing this issue at its source. CHIROPRACTIC AND VERTIGO

FROM THE DOCTOR
SHOULDER BURSITIS
Many different injuries can occur in the shoulder, but shoulder bursitis often remains a mystery. Bursitis involves inflammation of a bursa, a thin fluid-filled sac causing pain, redness, and swelling. A bursa, a thin sac-like structure, reduces friction between skin and bones, tendons and bones, or ligaments and bones. Excessive friction from overuse irritates and inflames the bursa, leading to increased fluid production and swelling. Causes of bursitis include excessive stress on the bursa, leading to three types: Chronic, Infected, and Traumatic bursitis. Chronic bursitis, the most common type, develops gradually due to repetitive bursa irritation. It can occur without a known cause or due to preexisting conditions. Infected bursitis, more severe, results from bacterial infection, potentially causing serious complications. Traumatic bursitis, the least common, often affects athletes due to repetitive rubbing or excessive joint bending. Symptoms vary based on inflammation severity and bursitis type. Chronic bursitis presents with swelling, while infected bursitis shows warmth, tenderness, pain, fever, and spreading redness and swelling. Traumatic bursitis includes rapid swelling onset, possibly with bruising. Treatment involves a thorough examination by a medical professional to diagnose the condition. Treatment focuses on reducing symptoms like pain and swelling through ice, stimulation, cold laser therapy, gentle stretching, and mobility exercises. Patients receive education on avoiding aggravating activities, light strengthening exercises, and guidance to prevent over-irritation, with a recommendation to seek medical advice if experiencing pain.

It marks the day—June 19, 1865—when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, with news that the Civil War had ended and that the enslaved were now free. This significant moment in history highlights the resilience, strength, and ongoing
fight for equality of African Americans. Celebrating Juneteenth allows us to reflect on the past, honor the struggles and achievements of African Americans, and renew our commitment to justice and equality for all.
Nancy Gagnier, Executive Director of the South Orange/ Maplewood Community Coalition on Race, develops pro-integrative strategies to support racial equity and inclusion.

This follows the success of its Youth Gaelic Football League and the growing enthusiasm for women’s sports nationwide. Gaelic football, deeply rooted in Irish culture, blends the physicality of soccer, the skill of basketball, and the high-scoring nature of Australian rules football. The Ladies Gaelic Football practices will be held at West Orange’s Stagg Field once a week this summer, with games beginning in September. Welcoming first-time players for the “B” division. Most games will be within 40 miles of West Orange, including Queens, the Bronx, Yonkers, and Orangeburg, NY. Leading the new ladies’ league, known as the “Shi-Ladies,” are head coaches Ciara O’Donoghue and Mairead Tamayne. O’Donoghue shares, “GAA is a passion of mine,” while Tamayne adds, “We recognize the importance of fostering opportunities in women’s sports. This is another sport to bring women together while promoting fitness, team building, and making it fun!” If you’re interested in joining the Ladies Gaelic Football league (ages 21 and up), visit www.EssexShillelaghsGAA.com or email join@essexshillelaghs.org. FINANCIAL FOCUS TALK TO YOUR FAMILY ABOUT WEALTH TRANSFER Have you considered the implications of a potential inheritance? Engaging in open conversations with your parents or family members who may bequeath assets is crucial for effective planning. Surprisingly, a study conducted by Edward Jones in collaboration with NEXT 360 Partners and Morning Consult revealed that more than a third of Americans are hesitant to broach the subject of wealth transfer with their families. Furthermore, only about a quarter of individuals have initiated discussions regarding generational wealth transfer. - Strengthening family ties: By discussing legacy aspirations and inheritance expectations, families can foster unity and a shared vision. - Preventing misunderstandings: Clearly outlining parental intentions regarding wealth transfer can avert any potential disappointment or confusion amongst family members. - Developing strategic plans: Ensuring tax-efficient strategies, updating beneficiary designations, and proper estate planning are crucial components to consider. - Safeguarding against unforeseen circumstances: By addressing potential issues related to parental incapacity early on, families can mitigate risks and ensure that future plans are well-protected. Although initiating these discussions may be challenging, early engagement is key to effective planning. Approach these conversations with care and understanding to pave the way for a secure and harmonious financial future for your family.” Such dialogues play a significant role in various aspects:
