Moose is a 2-year-old German Shepard, Lab, & Alaskan Malamute mix. He is incredibly goofy, friendly, full of energy, and loves all people and animals: Especially his two cat brothers, Batcat and TJ. Moose makes friends everywhere he goes and must say, “hi” to every human and creature that crosses his path. He is incredibly smart...sometimes too smart! If you see Moose around town, give him a shout and he will most definitely tilt his head at you and excitedly shout, “hello” right back at you.

SOMA DREAM TEAM MAKEOVER

This month’s Dream Team feature is Rebecca Davis

instructor who knows how to keep her body and mind in shape. However, even the most zen among us can struggle with anxiety from life’s demands. That’s where

Rebecca started taking yoga about 7 years ago as an off day workout. When her personal life became harder, she dug deeper into her practice and reflected on

CBD comes in. With Astraea&co. Balance Tincture, Rebecca can experience fast and powerful relief for her anxiety by taking it under her tongue. Plus, she can also use it topically to soothe her achy muscles and joints after a yoga session. We want Rebecca to feel her best, and we’re here to help her achieve that. ~ Jill Cohen @TheCannaBossLady

what truly inspired her. Fitness and yoga brought her joy. She learned so much just from the power of breath. She wanted to take what she experienced and share it with other people.

The idea of teaching came to her when her life needed a change. She took a leap of faith and never looked back. It was the best decision she’s ever made.

Julie Perlow- Retail Therapy - Rebecca and I bonded right away on our shared background in fashion. She has retail and styling experience in some of the more elite stores in NYC so she and I loved talking fashion. I enjoyed collaborating with her and integrating her personal sense of style.. Rebecca received her yoga certification in May 2019 and started teaching at Life Time Fitness in March of 2020 and Bakerstreet Yoga in August of 2020. She specialize in Vinyasa and Yin styles. complements her knockout cheekbones and beautifully full eyebrows perfectly. Lee Seidenberg Photography - Rebecca was very easy to photograph. We coudn’t get a bad photo of her even if we tried. It was almost impossible to narrow everything to few shots for this article. For the suede dress, we stepped

out into sun and used the blue fence in our yard for contrast and a pop of color. For the sequent top, a shimmery insulation board from Home Depot went a long way as a backdrop. We pulled colored paper to match the colors in the vintage green and yellow dress.

Yoni Kreger, YK Salon - We gave Rebecca’s stunning curls an extra boost with a White Diamond treatment. It’s a fantastic smoothing service that leaves her hair feeling silky and buoyant while enhancing the integrity of her curls. To amp up the volume and vibrancy, we added layers without sacrificing too much length. This

DRINK OF THE MONTH

Pimm’s Punch

Englishman James Pimm invented this crisp cooler (based off his eponymous gin-based liqueur) at his London oyster bar in the mid-19th century. It’s a classic for a reason! Give it a modern spruce with flavors of apple, zesty citrus and tart passion fruit, topped off with the delicious herb-tinged fruits of Pimm’s No.1.

Ingredients

• 2 cups (500ml) Pimm’s No 1 cup • 3 cups (750ml) lemon vodka, chilled • 3 cups (750ml) ginger beer, chilled • 6 stems fresh round mint, torn into sprigs • 3 baby (120g) cucumbers, sliced • 1 medium orange, sliced

• 250 grams strawberries, halved • 4 cups ice • Combine all ingredients in jug • Pour in Mason jar to drink • Garnish lavishly like a flower arrangement with a cucumber slice, fresh mint sprig, berries, citrus

RECIPE OF THE MONTH

PESTO TORTELLINI PASTA SALAD Prep time: 15 mins • Servings: 6

INSTRUCTIONS

1. After cooking the tortellini according to the package directions, drain and allow to cool slightly. Combine with the tomatoes and peas. 2. In a separate bowl, combine the remaining ingredients for the dressing. 3. Whisk the dressing together well and season to taste with salt and pepper. 4. Add the dressing to the tortellini mixture and toss well to combine.

2 - 10 oz packages cheese tortellini, cooked according to package directions 1 ½ cups grape or cherry tomatoes, sliced 1 cup peas, frozen or fresh ½ cup plain Greek yogurt 2 Tbsp mayonnaise ½ cup pesto, store-bought or homemade Summer sides should be easy, tasty, and quick and this pesto pasta salad is just that. Easy …under 10 ingredients all easy to find. Tasty …well obviously! Freshly cooked pasta, veggies at their peak, and a creamy pesto dressing that is tangy and well-seasoned. Quick …15 minutes start to finish. For real. INGREDIENTS

Recipe Notes • Use tortellini that is still a little warm (cooled only slightly after draining) so it can better absorb the dressing. • Either fresh or frozen peas work well in this recipe. No need to cook them first, just toss them in with the tortellini. • Greek yogurt makes this pasta salad super creamy and tangy, without being overly mayonnaise-y. • Store-bought pesto dressing is readily available, but if you have an abundance of basil in your garden make your own. Simply blend a bunch of fresh basil with a handful of pine nuts, a couple cloves of garlic, salt, pepper and a glug (about 1/4 cup) of olive oil.

2 Tbsp parmesan cheese, grated kosher salt and pepper, to taste

FROM THE DOCTOR

FINDING STRESS RELIEF FOR BETTER HEALTH

Stress is a leading cause of many diseases and health problems. Being mindful of your stress levels is essential for your overall health. If you’re constantly in the “fight or flight” mode, it can negatively impact your health. Here are some ways to reduce stress: Meditation: Meditation slows down your brainwaves and can be life-changing for some people. Deep breathing: Deep breathing exercises help the body relax and get out of fight or flight mode. Try the 4-7 8 method by taking a deep breath for 4 seconds, holding it for 7 seconds, and exhaling for 8 seconds. Physical exercise: Exercise releases endorphins that boost your mood and signal happiness to your body. It positively affects your immune function, cardiovascular health, and digestion. Nutrition: Eliminating certain food groups, such as those that are naturally inflammatory, can reduce stress and inflammation in the body. Eating fruits and vegetables that contain natural antioxidants, fiber, and anti-inflammatory compounds is a great idea. Connecting with others: Spending time with loved ones reduces stress and helps uncover solutions to problems. If you still can’t find relief, seek help from a healthcare professional. Identifying physical, chemical, and emotional stresses that affect the nervous system can help alleviate many health issues.

FROM THE DOCTOR Ultrasound is a versatile physical therapy treatment option that provides thermal or non-thermal physiologic effects. It uses inaudible acoustic high-frequency energy to penetrate between 2 cm and 5 cm beneath the skin’s layer, making it an effective tool for treating various injuries. One of the therapeutic effects that ultrasound offers is related to tissue healing. It is suggested that applying US to injured tissues can accelerate the rate of healing and enhance the quality of the tissue repair. Ultrasound’s uses include treating joint pain, plantar fasciitis, sports injuries, lateral and medial epicondylitis, neck and low back pain, soft tissue healing, and arthritis. Thermal ultrasound is used to heat dense collagenous tissues and requires a relatively high intensity, preferably in continuous mode, to achieve this effect. Non-thermal ultrasound, which is attributed primarily to a combination of cavitation and acoustic streaming, is also effective. Stable cavitation occurs at therapeutic doses of US, while unstable cavitation is detrimental to tissue viability and does not occur at therapeutic levels if a good technique is used. It is advisable to have a physical therapist perform a thorough examination of the injury to determine if ultrasound is the right modality for the patient. Depending on the nature of the condition, non-thermal ultrasound may be more beneficial than thermal ultrasound. Each condition is unique to each patient, and proper consultation with a physical therapist is essential for effective treatment. Call our office to schedule an evaluation or to learn more. FINANCIAL FOCUS Introducing teenagers to investing is crucial for their financial success, and one place to start is with a Roth IRA. A Roth IRA is a popular retirement savings vehicle that allows earnings to grow tax-free, provided withdrawals aren’t taken until the investor is at least 59 ½ years old and has had the account for five or more years. Contributions can be withdrawn at any time, penalty-free, to pay for any expenses, including college. Grandparents and parents can also contribute up to $6,500 per year, as long as the amount contributed doesn’t exceed the amount of taxable compensation for the year. Matching your child’s contribution up to the limit can provide an incentive for them to continue investing and instill the value of earning a match. Teens can find employment at local restaurants and shops, but parents can also employ them to provide income that can go into a Roth IRA. Payments for a child under 18, working for a parent’s sole proprietorship or partnership, are not subject to Social Security and Medicare taxes. Using some of their wages to help fund a Roth IRA gives you a chance to explain the value of investing early on and the importance of putting time on your side when investing. Opening a Roth IRA for your teen can provide a lifetime of consistent and informed investing, and discussing different types of investments can provide them with the basic knowledge that all investors should have.

HOME DESIGN “Here’s another one!” declared my real estate partner Kim Kelly. “What is that, like five in a row?” “I think so,” I replied. We were staring at the color of the living room wall in a house on the broker open tour. “It seems everyone wants a blue living room,” Kim opined. “And why not?” I asked. “Blue is an amazing color and works really well when you’re trying to decide what color to use in your house.” “Beats the heck out of white, or worse, gray. I’ve seen enough of those wall colors,” groused Kim. “Me too,” I replied. “They’re pretty much on the way out. Many people want to be surrounded by color. Not necessarily bright, saturated colors. But softer colors, colors you’d find in nature.” Kim was on her phone typing away, then read what was on her screen. “Well, according to Mr. Google, blue is reminiscent of nature and is thought to promote

intelligence, serenity, and loyalty. It can make you feel calm and soothed, which is ideal when creating a peaceful home environment.” “Well, there you have it!” I exclaimed. “And this whole room looks fabulous. They really did a good job complimenting the wall color. I mean, sky blue looks great when paired with jewel tones, creams, and gold. But there are so many shades of blue. Sometimes it’s difficult to choose which one to use.” “And all those shades will give you the summer blues...” joked Kim. I groaned at her lame pun and headed back to the kitchen.

REAL ESTATE GET GROOVY AT MAPLEWOODSTOCK 2023 I am a proud sponsor of Maplewoodstock and have been for the past eight years. The family-friendly festival started back in 2004 and now attracts over 7,500 people. This summer, Maplewoodstock

will be held on July 8th and 9th at Memorial Park. The festival features a diverse lineup of musical performances spanning various genres, including rock, folk, jazz, blues and more. This year’s headliners are MIHALI, a Maplewood-born singer/songwriter who performs a sonic evolution of Reggae and LOUIS CATO, a Grammy nominated instrumentalist who has worked with Bobby McFerrin and A Tribe Called Quest. In addition to the good-music-vibe, Maplewoodstock offers a colorful art and crafts fair, where local artisans display and sell their creations including jewelry, clothing, artwork and other crafts. The festival also caters to families by providing an array of activities for children. Bouncy rides, face painting and interactive games help keep the kids engaged and entertained. Back in August of 1969, the original Woodstock was an incredible gathering of people that shared a common experience of music, community and togetherness. Maplewoodstock shares the same idea of unity, spirit and pride. I am happy to be a Maplewoodstock sponsor so get your groove on and come join me at the celebration.

This month, I’m featuring the living and dining room of a beautiful Tudor house in Maplewood (see pics). If you look at the “before” pictures, you’ll see that these rooms have BEAUTIFUL original detail, but are dark. Personally, I LOVE Tudor homes. The “darkness” is a common complaint I hear. Well, it doesn’t HAVE to be. First, We painted (because paint is a decorator’s miracle) lightening up all the trim with white paint and instantly brightening the room. We kept the overhead beams in their natural wood, to keep with the style of the Tudor time period. As you can see, the white trim changed everything. The dining room was a little more challenging because it had one tiny window that was actually a stained glass window that let in virtually NO light at all. So we exchanged that little window for 3 bright new ones. The new windows bring color and light to the space. Seeeeeee? The Decor Whore Team can make HUGE changes, without breaking the bank.
