Finn is a 2-year-old Shiba Inu. True to the breed, she’s fearless, strong-willed, and only listens when it’s convenient. She loves her daily walks and has very definite opinions about the destination. Ideally, she’d like every walk to include a stop at Able Bakery, where she gets a dog treat! Her favorite daily pastime is trying to convince one of her two dads, Daniel or Kip, that the other did not yet feed her.

INTRODUCING THE PEACOCK FAMILY

Photography by Jamie Meier

The story of the Peacock family begins in Florida. Robin explained, “Dan was working at Nickelodeon Studios and I was finishing up college – and we met in a bar.” After college, Robin moved north where she attended Villanova Law School, and Dan moved to New York City to continue his career in sports and entertainment finance. While they focused on school and work during the week, they often spent time together, exploring New York by venturing to the most recommended pizza spots in five boroughs. They eventually married, and, after living in the city, the Peacock family came to Maplewood via Queens. Robin shared, “I was working at the IRS at the time when two co-workers (who still live here) said, ‘you must check out this town!’ As soon as we stepped into Maplewood Village, we fell in love.” They moved here in November 2004. With the move to Maplewood, the family flourished. They added a third son and took advantage of all the town has to offer. Avid lovers of the outdoors, they spent a lot of time in Maplecrest and Memorial parks when the boys where younger – sidelines and on bleachers throughout the area as all three playing a variety of town, school, and club sports over the years. Ben (20) is now a rising Junior at Ohio State (which is also Dan’s alma mater). Robin and Dan enjoy having him home and watching him reconnect with local friends. “They are all young adults now, and it’s been so fun to watch them grow together - and to see what’s next for each of them,” said Robin. Henry is a rising Senior at Pingry who plays soccer and lacrosse. He recently spent a semester abroad living in Jordan. He and his younger brother Teddy (13) – along with Dan - are certified SCUBA divers. Teddy attends Maplewood Midde School and plays lacrosse throughout the year. He also occasionally “chicken-sits” for their neighbors. As their sons grow older, Dan and Robin are pursuing new career paths. Dan recently began a new role as CFO for Emursive Productions, and Robin transitioned from law to the nonprofit sector. These days, Robin can often be found at The Breadstand or Village Coffee – her preferred spots for local work meetings as the Executive Director of MEND.

MEND stands for “Meeting Essential Needs with Dignity,” and is an interfaith network of over twenty member food pantries and community partners located throughout Essex County (mendnj.org). Robin noted, “Part of my job is help transform hunger relief. Boxed and canned goods can help in an emergency, but they aren’t the answer for improving the overall health of a community longer term.” The NJ Economic Development Authority recently designated several towns within Essex County as ‘food deserts,’ highlighting a lack of consistent access to affordable and nutritious food as a key local issue. Robin explained, “MEND works within local communities to listen to their needs, and to work with community leaders and organizations to design specific, responsive programming to meet those needs.” She continued, “Based on community feedback over the last several years, MEND provides access to high quality, culturally relevant, fresh, and healthy food.” In January of 2020, IMPACT 100 Essex awarded MEND a $120,000 grant to create a “Fresh Food Hub” in Orange, NJ. The hub team coordinates fresh food sourcing logistics for their partners. They used the funding to build the initial infrastructure needed – including two walk-in refrigerators and a van - and are now looking to grow and sustain this work as they add partners and expand programming, and as the need remains high. Robin elaborated, “We are eager for more people to know who we are and what we do – and to help support this important work as they are able.” When asked about free time, Robin admitted, “Working and being a mom takes up 99% of my time, but I’m trying to findmore time for myself. I’ve dusted off my running shoes and joined the SOMA Fox Running Club (that selected MEND as a charity partner. I’m running in the Fifth Annual “10Days of 10Ks” organized by local runner, Jessica Lituchy, to support MEND. Anyone can participate as awalker or runner for as fewor as many events from July 8-July 17. www.mendnj.org/10-days-of-10Ks As a family, the Peacocks also enjoy traveling together and spending time outdoors. So far, they traveled to Ireland, Iceland, Greece, Africa, Jordan, Panama, and Mexico. For now, they are content to simply enjoy hiking locally, gardening in their yard, and walking their two rescue dogs (Archer and Prince) around town. And because old habits die hard, they also frequent local pizza spots: including, Arturo’s, Village Trattoria, Roman Gourmet, and Sabbatino’s.

FROM THE DOCTOR As the weather gets warmer people are hitting the golf course. Many injuries including Golfers Elbow or medial epicondylitis. Golfer’s elbow is a condition that causes pain where the tendons of your forearm muscles attach to the bony bump on the inside of your elbow. Golfer’s elbow, is caused by damage to the muscles and tendons that control your wrist and fingers. The damage is typically related to excess or repeated stress especially forceful wrist and finger motions. Improper lifting, throwing or hitting, as well as too little warmup or poor conditioning, also can contribute to golfer’s elbow. The pain might spread into your forearm and wrist. Symptoms include pain and tenderness on the inner side of your elbow, extending along the inner side of your forearm. Pain typically worsens with certain movements, Stiffness, Weakness and numbness or tingling. The numbness and tingling sensations might radiate into one or more fingers but most likely the ring and little fingers. Golfers elbow can happen to patients who play. Racket sports, baseball, softball, football, archery, weight lifting and javelin throwing also can cause golfer’s elbow. Occupational “golfer’s elbow” can occur in fields such as construction, plumbing and carpentry. There are several risk factors that can make the injury more prevalent such as smoking, obesity, overuse and (40+). In order to prevent this injury patients can strengthen their forearm muscles by using light weights or squeezing a tennis ball. This prevents overloading the muscles. Use the right equipment. Lift properly. When lifting anything keep your wrist rigid and stable to reduce the force to your elbow. At the first sign of elbow pain, take a break. In order to diagnose the injury an MD can take an x-ray or MRI to see if there is any tissue damage. There is usually a palpation exam to find where there is the most tenderness. There are options for treatment. Rest and stop repetitive activities until the pain is gone. If you return to activity too soon, you can worsen your condition. Apply ice packs to your elbow for 15 to 20 minutes at a time, three to four times a day for several days. This will help the inflammation. It might help to massage your inner elbow with ice for five minutes at a time, two to three times a day. Sometimes a doctor might recommend that you wear a counterforce brace on your affected arm, to reduce strain. Stretch and strengthen the affected area. Your Physical Therapist will suggest exercises to help build up the weak muscles. Modalities such as cold laser and ultrasound can further help to reduce the inflammation. Gradually return to your usual activities. When your pain is gone, practice the arm motions of your sport or activity. Review your golf or tennis swing with an instructor to ensure that your technique is correct and make adjustments if needed. FROM THE DOCTOR

Are You Dealing with a Pinched Nerve?

Our nerves spread throughout our body in an extensive network, with countless receptors that send information back to our brains about the world around us. They inform us when we lay our head on a soft pillow, when we feel the burn of a hot stove, and so much more. But what happens when our nerves are damaged? A pinched nerve is caused by compression of the tissues— things like bones, tendons, muscles, or cartilage — surrounding a nerve, which is then interpreted by the brain as pain, tingling, numbness, or weakness. Pinched nerves can happen anywhere in the body, but most commonly this condition occurs in the spine. Soft disks, which are the cushion between your vertebrae, can have pressure on them from an imbalance; an improper movement or sleeping incorrectly, causing pressure on the nerves in that area. Although there are many causes, including a slow gradual onset from poor posture or lifestyle, having a discussion or consultation with an expert is best. There are times that symptoms will resolve on their own. You should seek treatment for pain that is persistent or that grows progressively worse (even if you find the pain comes and goes with increased frequency). In some cases, a pinched nerve can become a bigger problem, by causing permanent nerve damage. It’s important to seek treatment sooner rather than later for a pinched nerve. To learn more about pinched nerves, check out our latest blog post, “Do I Have a Pinched Nerve?”, at www.southorangechiropractic.com. Being a resident of South Orange for over 20 years, I know there is much to celebrate about our two town’s uniqueness and creative ventures. Maplewoodstock has evolved into becoming a grand medium for showcasing all that our locality has to offer and gives creators a platform to reach the community. I support South Orange and Maplewood’s musicians and artists because I believe our local art reflects the uniqueness and creative richness of our identity. Maplewood and South Orange’s colorful personality is evident through both the upbeat vibrancy of the festival and the attendance of the community. I personally believe what makes Maplewoodstock so special, year after year, is the sense of an unprecedented enthusiasm bustling throughout the festival. When I attend Maplewoodstock, I am surrounded by so many familiar and unfamiliar faces, I am warmed by the pride I feel to belong to such a display of community togetherness. As nostalgia persists after more than 50 years since the first Woodstock festival, I can confidently say that Maplewoodstock has, and will continue to create long lasting memories for the residents of our talented community.

FINANCE

PREPARE YOURSELF FOR A LONG RETIREMENT

We all want to live long lives. We all expect to live long lives. But are we financially prepared for this longevity? Before we get to the issue of preparation, let’s look at a couple of interesting findings from a 2022 survey by Age Wave and Edward Jones: • The surveyed retirees said, on average, they expect to live to 89, and they said the ideal length of retirement is 29 years. • When asked if they want to live to 100, nearly 70% of the respondents said “yes.” The main reason for this desire for long life? To spend more years with their family and friends. If you’re going to enjoy a longer lifespan, and the extra years with your loved ones, you need to ensure your finances are also in good shape. Here are some basic steps to follow: • Save and invest early and often. This may be the oldest piece of financial advice, but it’s still valid. The earlier you start saving and investing for your retirement, the greater your potential accumulation. Consider this: If you began saving just $5,000 per year at age 25, and earned a hypothetical 6.5% annual rate of return, and didn’t take any early withdrawals, you’d end up with $935,000 by the time you reached 65. But if you waited until 35 to start saving and investing, and you earned the same hypothetical 6.5% return – again with no early withdrawals – you’d only end up with $460,000. And if you didn’t start saving until 45, you’d end up with just over $200,000, again given the same 6.5% return. • Be mindful of debt. You may not want to be burdened with certain debts when you enter retirement. So, while you’re still working, try to reduce unwanted debts, particularly those that don’t offer the financial benefits of tax-deductible interest payments. The lower your debt load, the more you can save and invest for the future. • Keep reviewing your progress. It’s important to monitor the progress you need to make toward achieving your goal of a comfortable retirement. Over the short term, your investment balances may fluctuate, especially in volatile financial markets such as we’ve seen this year. You get a clearer picture of your situation if you look at long-term results. For example, have your accounts grown over the past 10 years as much as you had planned? Moving forward, do you think you’re in good shape, or will you need to make some changes to your investment strategy? Keep in mind that, if you’re 50 or older, you can make “catch-up” contributions to your IRA and 401(k) that allow you to exceed the regular limits. You may also want to adjust your investment mix as you near retirement to potentially lower your risk exposure. Enjoy many years of a healthy, happy retirement. You can help support this vision by considering your financial moves and making the ones that are right for you.

PROTECT CHILDREN WITH DISABILITIES When it comes to designing an estate plan there is no “one size fits all,” because each family is unique. You may have a young adult child with profound disabilities who will never be self-sufficient and will require extensive support. Or you may have a child who is developing a certain degree of independence with work activity or ability to live outside your home despite their physical or intellectual challenges, and you want to make sure that those capabilities are encouraged and supported. If you have a child with disabilities, advance planning is crucial for their protection. Maintaining eligibility for means-tested governmental programs like SSI, DDD, Section 8 and Medicaid may be vital. These programs have income limits and resource limits. You may want to include a Supplemental Needs Trust in your Will and direct the child’s share of life insurance, IRAs or other inheritances into that Trust. Although a general discretionary Trust or a support Trust may be appropriate for your other children, it could be disastrous for a child with disabilities by causing ineligibility. Are your parents thinking of excluding the disabled child from their estate plan for fear of disrupting benefits or because they think s/he “won’t need anything other than governmental benefits?” The availability of housing for intellectually disabled NJ residents has dried up. There may be long waiting lists for other services. Nursing or health care services may be limited. A carefully crafted Trust can supplement these absent benefits. One option is for your parents to include a supplemental needs Trust in their own Wills. Another option is that parents can establish a Supplemental Needs Trust now as a “stand by” Trust which can be funded by them or others from time to time. The Trustee -- who is often the parent-- sets up the Trust account with a minimal amount such as a $100. Your child’s grandparents can then periodically place gift money into that Trust. They could name it as a beneficiary of some percentage of their life insurance policy, or include a bequest to that Trust in their own Will. FAMILY ESTATE PLANNING
