MEET THE LOGA FAMILY

Photography by Jamie Meier

In South Orange’s heart, the Loga family stands as a testament to resilience, warmth, and community spirit. Mark and Jennifer Loga, along with their daughters Abigail and Juliet, their beloved dog Pickles, and the memory of their daughter Lucy, rooted themselves in the SOMA community. They built a life rich in connections following their initial move to the NYC area from Buffalo, NY in 2011. Six-year-old Juliet, a new dancer, found joy and passion in her dance classes at Class Act Performing Arts. Her enthusiasm for performance and her wide range of interests reflect her vibrant and curious nature. Abigail, two, is known for her playful antics and love for ‘nacks’ (snacks), coupled with a curious fascination for “The Grinch.” Pickles, their adorable yorkie mix, completes the family with his lively presence. The Loga family faced an unimaginable loss in 2020, with the stillbirth of their daughter Lucy, at eight months of pregnancy. Jen explains, “Discussing Lucy is complex. We don’t want to overshadow moments of joy, or ruin someone’s day, yet she is a part of our family.” Jen is a dedicated advocate for stillbirth research and prevention, passionately sharing her volunteer work. Jen describes, “Until it happened to us, we had no idea that this was still a thing. It can happen to anybody. The most surprising thing to Mark and me was how little funding for research, data, and methods to prevent future tragedies exists.” Driven by their personal experience, Jen and Mark are vocal advocates for this cause. “It’s shocking how little progress has been made in reducing

In their professional lives, Mark and Jennifer achieved notable success. Mark, a civil engineer with HDR Inc., works on infrastructure projects large and small with the Port Authority, MTA, Amtrak, and other agencies across New York and New Jersey. Jennifer, in her role in media analytics and measurement, contributes significantly to the health advertising technology sector. Jennifer’s community involvement in SOMA is equally impressive. She shares, “When we moved to SOMA, I was a new mom and didn’t know a soul. I joined a large Facebook group and was able to find other new moms. I invited them over to my house. Since then, we’ve dubbed ourselves “mom chat” and the twelve of us and all of our children still remain close friends.” The Loga family’s commitment to maintaining these connections and their deep appreciation for the South Orange and Maplewood area underscore the family’s strong sense of community, empathy, and love.

stillbirth rates in the U.S. for almost three decades,” Jen states. This mission led Jen, along with other SOMA parents, to meet with legislators to support the SHINE for Autumn Act in Washington D.C., and raise nearly $60,000 for local stillbirth prevention and support programs. Mark organized several golf fundraisers for an organization that helped them with group therapy soon after their loss. They are also vocal supporters of Count The Kicks, an organization focused on educating expectant parents about stillbirth prevention. A tree in Maplewood Memorial Park was dedicated to Lucy Loga. The plaque reads, “In strength for all the parents of babies who never made it to earth.” Beyond their advocacy work, the Logas cherish family adventures. Mark fondly recalls their recent ski trip in Vermont, emphasizing the joy of exploring new activities as a family. He explains, “As the girls grow, I’m excited to introduce new experiences to them and create memories together that will last forever.”

SOMA DREAM TEAM MAKEOVER

This month’s feature is Robin Chase Robin moved to Maplewood from Park Slope 15 years ago. After spending nearly 20 years as a special education teacher, she decided to follow her passion for food photography. During an apprenticeship program, it was suggested she pair with a food stylist. Robin met Sue Von Brachel, another

mushrooms known to aid digestion and reduce anxiety. Additionally, I suggested Xula Moon-a-pause - a CBD tincture with a formulation that proven to reduce typical symptoms of menopause (itching skin, pelvic pain, night sweats, and hot flashes). It’s amazing how well it works! ~ Jill Cohen @TheCannaBossLady. Julie Perlow- Retail Therapy - Robin is one cool chick! She usually only wears black. She left our meeting with a green sequined sleeveless top, among other more edgy pieces. She is fun to work with and inspired a couple of great looks; Including, a sort of “Joan Jett” punk rock badass girl style. I also loved putting her in an edgy body-con shirt dress! It was perfect for her petite frame. Norah Salzar, Makeup artist - It was such an honor to do Robin’s makeup! She’s never had her makeup done

Maplewoodian, and launched Robinandsue.com 8 years ago. Since then, they’ve photographed everything from restaurants and cookbooks to product packaging and social media. They recently did a photoshoot with the fitness brand, Tonal. When she’s not shooting food, she’s pursuing her other passion, trail running. Robin runs ultramarathons (defined as any distance over a marathon). So when she’s not in the studio, she’s in the woods! Robin lives with her husband, Don, and her three boys in an active house that’s rarely quiet.

professionally, ever. In her makeup, I wanted to emphasize Robin’s beautiful skin texture with glossy skin and a strong lip to contrast the darker clothing styling and the elements of the lighting Lee was using. A statement lip is always a nice touch in my book.

Jill Cohen, TheCannaBossLady - Robin struggles with some anxiety and symptoms of menopause. In order to help her improve her brain fog, focus, and clarity, I recommended NFZD mushroom powder, which contains adaptogenic

Yoni Kreger, YK Salon - Nothing is more joyous to an artist than working with another artist, such as we had with Robin. As a photographer, Robin was completely trusting and open to whatever we had in mind for her new look. For color, we simply sought to brighten her face with some carefully applied highlights, as well as an easy touch-up to her roots. The soft bob added vibrancy to her curls while accentuating her lovely face shape.

Lee Seidenberg Photography - I’ve been sharing a studio space with Robin for the last 2.5 years. And in that time, I can count the number of times on one hand when she wore anything that wasn’t black or blue. Robin was definitely out of her comfort zone not only wearing colors, but being on the other side of the camera. For the green sequin top, we used natural window light and a prism to get the rainbow glare. In the chair pose, we used an LED light a similar color backdrop.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH

INSTRUCTIONS

KITCHEN SINK COOKIES Prep Time: 10 mins • Cook Time: 15 mins Yields: 20 cookies These kitchen sink cookies are a great way to use up all those tasty bits that might otherwise get tossed. Use this recipe as a guide, not the bible. Don’t have white chocolate? Use peanut butter or butterscotch morsels. Prefer almonds or walnuts? Swap them in for the pecans. Can’t stand coconut? Leave it out. Salt lover? Crumble up some pretzels or add a sprinkle of salt before baking. Customize these cookies to your taste and to your pantry.

1. Whisk the flour, oats, salt, baking powder and baking soda together in a small bowl. Set aside. 2. Cream the butter and sugars with a paddle attachment of an electric mixer until light and fluffy. 3. Add the eggs one at a time, beating after each addition. Stir in the vanilla. 4. Add the flour mixture and beat on low until just combined. 5. Mix in the remaining ingredients and until just combined. 6. Using an ice cream scooper or 1/4 measuring cup, portion out each cookie and place on a parchment lined sheet tray. You will have 20 cookies. 7. Cover and chill for at least one hour or overnight. 8. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees

and line an additional sheet tray with parchment. Divide the cookies evenly between the trays leaving room for the cookies to spread. 9. Bake for 13-15 mins or until the cookies are set, golden around the edges, and still a little soft. They should be a little under-done, the cookies will continue to set as they cool. 10. Serve warm or at room temperature. Recipe Notes These cookies will keep for 3-4 days in an airtight container at room temperature.

INGREDIENTS

1 1/2 tsp vanilla extract 2 oz white chocolate chunks or chips 4 oz bittersweet chocolate chunks or chips 4 oz semi-sweet chocolate chunks or chips 3/4 cup toasted pecans, coarsely chopped 1/2 cup sweetened coconut flakes 1/2 cup dried cranberries or cherries

2 1/2 cups all purpose flour 2/3 cup old fashioned oats 1 tsp kosher salt 1 tsp baking powder 1/2 tsp baking soda 1 cup unsalted butter, softened (2 sticks) 2/3 cup sugar 2/3 cup light brown sugar 2 eggs

FINANCIAL FOCUS Investing for your future is crucial, but navigating financial markets can be complex. A financial advisor can assist in various key areas: •Developing a personal financial strategy: A financial advisor will help you create tailored financial and investment strategies by understanding your risk tolerance, retirement timeline, envisioned lifestyle, and other goals. •Avoiding mistakes: Financial advisors can help steer you away from costly investment errors, such as attempting to time the market, which can be challenging and often leads to missed opportunities. •Checking progress toward your goals: Without guidance, assessing portfolio performance against a market index may not provide meaningful insights. A financial advisor can help you establish more relevant benchmarks and regularly review your portfolio and investment strategy to ensure alignment with your financial goals. Having a financial advisor by your side can provide confidence and support as you make decisions about your financial future. Working with a professional can help you navigate the complexities of financial markets and make informed decisions that align with your long-term objectives. By utilizing their expertise, you can gain a clearer understanding of your financial situation and take strategic steps to secure your financial future.

HOME DESIGN “I can’t believe they’re out!” she exclaimed. “What?” I asked. “You said all white kitchens were out.” I was in the midst of a conversation with a colleague at the SOMA Chamber of Commerce Holiday party. “Well,” I replied, “when I say all white kitchens, I’m talking about frost white cabinets, with shiny white countertops, and white glistening backsplash tiles. People nowadays are looking to warm up their kitchen spaces. And that can include white cabinets. There are plenty of beautiful off white cabinets. And they pair perfectly with other colored cabinets if you want to mix and match.” “Is it true that wood cabinets are back in?” she asked. “Oh, in a big way,” I answered. “And they’re not the awful wood cabinets your grandma had. These are warm and beautiful and come in so many varieties. They also pair fabulously with the off-white cabinets. I just finished the kitchen in a whole-house renovation I’m working on,

and I paired warm mid-toned wood base cabinets with gorgeous off-white cabinets. It’s amazing looking!” “But do you think that will go out of style soon?” she asked. “Well, there’s no predicting how long a trend lasts, but to me, a beautiful kitchen is a beautiful kitchen. Now if you push the envelope too far, that might be a hindrance to resale, but if you’re going to live with the kitchen for 10 years, you should do what makes you happy. The one goal I tell my clients that I want to achieve is that when they come down in the morning to start their day and step into their kitchen, it makes them smile.”

INTERIOR DESIGN We’re one month into 2024, and as you start to put your holiday decorations away for the year (okay maybe you’re more efficient than me and you got them put away in January), I’m betting at the same time you’re noticing little things around your home that you really want to update. But perhaps you’re wondering, “Hmmm, what are thenew trends for 2024?” Well, I got your back, decor lovers! So obviously, I don’t have a crystal ball (though I’d love one… more shiny pretty things please!). I definitely see certain trends coming. One of the biggest trends? Green! The interior design world pushed the color green for almost 4 years, and it is finally getting the notice it deserves. I’m not talking about 1990s hunter green; I’m talking about emerald green, olive green, mint green, and in some settings, even kelly green. In addition to green, bold colors in general are very popular. We’re seeing bold colors on walls, in rugs, on pillows, on wallpapers, and even on large pieces furniture. Whether it’s a bold, bright patterned wallpaper, or a solid unconventional color, people are ready to make a statement. This leads me to another trend: Dynamic, brightly colored, and intricately patterned wall murals are definitely having a moment. Whether it’s large geometric shapes, or abstract vibrant colors seeping together with flecks of gold, the walls of homes are definitely taking center stage—and I love it! Do you?

HARMONIZING TRADITION WITH TECHNOLOGY: OUR PATH TO A SMART NURSERY LIGHTING AND AUDIO

In embracing the dual joys and challenges of parenting twins, my wife and I undertook a unique project: integrating smart technology into a traditionally styled nursery. This endeavor, stemming from our personal experiences, has evolved into a professional pursuit, where I now assist families in blending modern convenience with classic nursery charm. At the heart of our twins’ nursery are seamlessly integrated smart lighting and shades. They adjust intuitively to the rhythm of the day, providing a comforting ambiance for sleep and a lively environment for play. A particularly memorable morning, when both twins needed attention, highlighted the system’s utility. With the touch of a button, the room suffused with a soft glow, and shades lifted quietly, allowing us to focus on our twins without hassle. This incident underscored our belief that technology should simplify, not complicate, key parenting moments. Our design philosophy extends beyond immediate functionality; we envisioned a space that evolves with our

children. The technology, discreet and unobtrusive, is not a fleeting trend but a long-term investment in our family’s future. Drawing from our journey, I offer my expertise to others. Whether it’s designing a tech-integrated nursery or incorporating smart solutions throughout a home, I guide families to create environments that reflect their unique needs and lifestyles. For those considering a blend of tradition and technology in their homes, I’m here to help bring that vision to life. Let’s transform your space into a modern, family-friendly sanctuary.

FROM THE DOCTOR

SHOVELING SNOW SAFELY WITHOUT INJURY

Choose the Right Shovel: Opt for a plastic ergonomic shovel over a large metal one. The ergonomic design helps you stay upright, avoiding back strain. Additional handles reduce low back strain by allowing you to stand straight as you shovel. Use Proper Technique: Start with a plan to avoid shoveling snow twice or blocking in a neighbor’s car. Push snow instead of scooping to reduce body stress. Use your legs by bending slightly at your hips and squatting down to lift without straining your back. Start Early; Shovel early, before the snow melts and re-freezes, making the job easier. Pushing light snow multiple times is easier than shoveling packed ice once. Take Your Time: Divide the chore into 15-minute intervals. Shoveling non-stop for over 30 minutes can cause back pain. Taking breaks will warm you up and help you realize when it’s time to stop. Protect Your Heart: Pushing a heavy snow blower can cause injury. Cold weather increases heart rate and blood pressure, making blood clot more easily. Individuals over 40 or relatively inactive should exercise caution. In summary, use the right shovel and proper technique, start early, take your time, and protect your heart to avoid injury while shoveling.

FROM THE DOCTOR In today’s tech-driven age, many households have at least one computer and a cell phone. Using phones as computer substitutes often leads to prolonged periods of looking down, causing neck pain, stiffness, and discomfort due to overworked neck muscles. This prompts the question: what is text or “tech” neck, and what are its symptoms? The head, depending on its angle, can weigh 27 to 60 pounds, straining neck muscles when faced downward for hours daily. Symptoms of text neck include neck pain, stiffness, headaches, spasms, numbness, tingling, weakness, and sharp pain when looking down. Managing this condition involves limiting device usage or consulting a physical therapist. Treatment often entails a comprehensive symptom evaluation, general exercises, postural correction, and re education to alleviate the impact of phone and computer activities on posture. Regular breaks and maintaining a comfortable distance from devices are also recommended to reduce joint pressure and stress. Consulting a physical therapist is crucial, as pre-existing issues may influence the treatment plan. By taking these steps, individuals can mitigate the effects of text neck and maintain better overall neck health. DO YOU HAVE A CASE OF “TECH NECK”?

THE CO-LAB When creativity and commerce intersect, it enhances the neighborhood, creating inspiration and community building experiences. That’s the belief behind the recent opening of The Co-Lab at South Orange. Located in the heart of downtown South Orange the co-retail space is designed to support local entrepreneurs and creatives launching their brick-and-mortar businesses. Founded as a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, The Co-Lab acts as an incubator, creating growth opportunities for small businesses within the surrounding area by mitigating some of the start-up cost hurdles. The investment involved with making the Co-Lab possible was made at no expense to South Orange tax paying residents. In addition to providing a space for entrepreneurs, The Co-Lab offers a collective, cooperative, and collaborative space for the community, through events and workshops. Bringing this project to life has been a joint effort involving volunteer leadership from residents, the South Orange Village and South Orange Downtown. It has been a great learning experience building on the original concept, defining the mission, and hiring a consultant to execute our launch. Developing an equitable application process for local businesses was very important for us. We made it a point to hear from every interested business owner. Their perspectives taught us a lot about the startup needs of the local small business.

Today the marketplace of shops inside The Co-Lab have reported positive sales since their Small Business Saturday preview. Each shop owner continues to make improvements to their products while learning about their customers. In the age of big box retailers, the small batch artisans and entrepreneurs are finding their lane as shoppers are proving they still appreciate unique goods. The Co-Lab at South Orange will host the South Orange Downtown Ribbon cutting ceremony on Saturday, February 3rd, at 11 am. This will mark the official opening of the unique space, which aims to foster a thriving community marketplace. Attendees will have the opportunity to explore an array of curated products from independent makers that bring a unique flavor to the South Orange retail landscape. We hope you continue to shop small, shop local with us soon.

WELLNESS WISDOM As the new year commences, our focus shifts towards personal improvement. However, many of us lack guidance on how to effectively pursue transformation. While the desire for change is strong, the path forward often remains unclear. Do you recognize this pattern? You begin the year eager for change, only to overcome by procrastination and overwhelm, leading to feelings of failure. Although this is a common cycle, it’s one that can be conquered. The key to breaking this cycle lies in reframing our goals. Instead of monumental objectives, concentrate on incremental action steps. For instance, strive to walk for 15 minutes a day, four times a week, rather than setting a vague goal like losing 10 pounds. This approach makes your goals feel more attainable and less daunting. NEED HELP GETTING UNSTUCK?

Establish a Long-Term Behavior Goal: Target a 3-6 month period; this timeframe has proven most effective for lasting change. Outline Daily Steps: Take one or two small daily actions toward your goal. Even minor steps can lead to significant progress over time. Most importantly, don’t underestimate the power of support. A coach can be invaluable in clarifying where to begin, what to focus on, and the next steps to take. Change requires time and effort, but with the right mindset, you can transform your aspirations into reality!

VALENTINE’S DAY GREETINGS Valentine’s Day occurs every February 14. Did you know that in addition to the United States, Valentine’s Day is celebrated in Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom, France and Australia? In Great Britain, Valentine’s Day began to gain popularity, celebrated in the 17th century. The tradition includes exchanging candy, flowers, and gifts between loved ones - all in the name of St. Valentine, the patron saint of love, marriage and happy endings. By the middle of the 18th century, it was common for friends and lovers of all social classes to exchange small tokens of affection or handwritten notes. By 1900 printed cards replaced written letters due to improvements in printing technology. Ready-made cards were an easy way for people to express their emotions at a time when direct expression of one’s feelings was discouraged. Cheaper postage rates also contributed to an increase in the popularity of sending Valentine’s Day greetings. Americans began exchanging hand-made valentines cards in the early 1700s. In the 1840s, Esther A. Howland began selling the first mass-produced valentines cards in America. Howland, known as the “Mother of the Valentine,” made elaborate creations with real lace, ribbons, and colorful pictures known as “scrapy.” According to the Greeting Card Association, Americans send an estimated 145 million Valentine’s Day cards each year, making Valentine’s Day the second largest card-sending holiday of the year, behind Christmas.
