MEET KELLY CONOVER
RESCUE DOG ADVOCATE
Rescue dogs hold a special place in the hearts of many animal advocates, including Kelly Conover, who has dedicated 15 years to animal rescue. Her journey began with fostering dogs, and she and her husband adopted a Staffordshire Terrier named Stevie eight years ago. Since then, they have become passionate advocates for the pitbull breed. “Being a psychologist and a mother, I find immense satisfaction in giving these dogs a second chance,” says Conover. In collaboration with Marcia Sandford Fishkind, Conover has also taken on the mission of tracking and trapping lost dogs in the South of Market (SOMA) area. Their motivation stemmed
from experiences with Buddha Dog Rescue & Recovery, which helped them rescue two local strays. “We quickly realized the community’s need for a more proactive approach, especially since the animal control services often only respond to dogs that are contained,” she explains. In addition to rescuing dogs, Conover and her team are working on a volunteer TNVR (Trap-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return) program aimed at providing medical care and managing the stray cat population. Through these efforts, Conover has met numerous dedicated animal advocates, fostering a strong sense of community and collaboration. “It’s heartwarming to see so many people come together for the welfare of animals,” she concludes. The commitment of volunteers like Conover sheds light on the critical importance of animal rescue efforts in our communities. Buddha Dog Rescue & Recovery: (http://buddhadogrescue.org)
