FROM THE DOCTOR Cubital Tunnel Syndrome occurs when the ulnar nerve passes through the cubital tunnel—a structure composed of muscle, ligaments, and bone—leading to inflammation. Often referred to as hitting the “funny bone,” this condition affects the nerve, causing swelling, irritation, and discomfort on the inside of the elbow. Cubital tunnel syndrome develops when a person frequently bends their elbows while pulling, reaching, or lifting, leans on their elbows, or suffers an injury to the area. Conditions like arthritis, bone spurs, and previous fractures or dislocations can also contribute. In many instances, the exact cause remains unknown. However, my observations indicate that repetitive pulling of heavy objects often leads to this injury. Common symptoms include numbness or tingling in the hand, particularly in the little and ring fingers, especially when the elbow bends. Patients may experience nighttime numbness, muscle weakness in grip strength, pain in the hand, and aching on the inside of the elbow. Occasionally, this condition mimics medial epicondylitis (golfer’s elbow), underscoring the importance of professional diagnosis. Upon seeking care, patients undergo thorough examinations and relevant history assessments. In some cases, x-rays, EMGs, and nerve conduction tests may follow. Treatment options include rest, anti-inflammatories, nighttime splinting, and physical therapy (PT). Night splinting helps alleviate pain. PT evaluations often lead to stretching and nerve gliding exercises to reduce tightness and irritation. If conservative treatments fail, physicians may discuss surgery. To prevent recurrence, patients should strengthen and stretch muscles, avoid leaning on elbows, and warm up before exercise.
