Access to the online registry, pictures and genealogy reports are vital for those looking to start their own mini Nubian herd. Chances are, you will buy animals linked to some of the few major breeders in the country. You can track ancestry on the MDGA website when buying registered stock. This is a unique opportunity to buy animals with good milking genetics and intentionally breed for strong udder attachment and excellent conformation. Having raised purebred Nubians for over 16 years, I had a preconceived notion that I would be milking
with two fingers if I bought a mini. I was pleasantly surprised to meet Beula, a 4-year-old mini-Nubian with an udder that rivaled my best purebreds. She was easy to milk with a placid disposition. Her daughter, though dam-reared, was also extremely approachable as a 5-month-old doeling. Since we hand-milk from behind instead of from the side, the milker’s “U” shape — the classical conformation of a good milker — with a nice open stance from behind for better access to the udder, is optimal. These minis all had the classic “U.” I am seeing this
in my other (unrelated) does as well, so I believe this must be due to either the influence of the Nigerian to the breed or to the careful breeding that minis are enjoying right now by breed enthusiasts; they’re being relatively new on the American scene. Injury, and chronic health issues are not reasons to stop farming. Farming provides many untracked opportunities to engage in healthy doses of exercise and muscle conditioning. It only takes a couple months of “retiring from the rural life” to feel the alarming effects of suddenly living without the daily rhythm of chores at the barn and on the farm. “Motion is Lotion” and “Use it or Lose It!” are things small farmers rarely need to be told. Still, the vagaries of age and injuries and surgeries do happen. When they do, they can bring with them a sudden existential question: “What do I do when I can’t do this anymore?” Fortunately, there are solutions out there for everyone who frames this question differently. Ask: “How can I adapt and adjust?” Mini Nubians helped me answer that question quite delightfully and broke down some of my old prejudices while doing it!
Minis take up one-third to half the space of standard breeds.
