Two days from their destination, the lead mule team required a new set of shoes. The borium spots had worn completely down and the nail crease was completely worn away on one side of the shoe Larry is holding.

In addition to the pole attached to the wagon tongue, the two lead mules were also attached with long leadropes.
A tongue dolly kept the weight of the tongue off the mules’ backs and assisted in making turns.
The pole is being attached to the hitch behind the trailer.
