by Joe Mischka C arrey Burnett and his family held their eighth Brush Creek Plow Day in Melber, Ky., May 10, 2025. More than 25 teamsters brought their draft horses, mules, ponies and saddle horses to plow and harrow two fields near the Burnett home. Last year, Carrey moved the event from a spot a mile or two down the road, to one much closer, once the land had become available. Carrey plowed with his team of American Brabants put to a Pioneer footlift sulky plow and told me “Well, it's been a lifelong dream in a sense,” he said.“I haven't been plowing all my life. We had draft horses. My dad raised me around them and working them, but not with a riding plow. And I watched these older gentlemen around doing it and admired it. And so we started up, I don’t know, 12 years ago, maybe more, and it was a long journey. There's more to it than just meets the eye, but anybody can do it if they set their mind to it.” Brush Creek Plow Day about his journey to have his own horses and then host a plow day.
