The bells on the lead team signal their presence to teams coming toward them and provide a cadence for the teams following behind.

When these hitches were regularly used to haul freight, the loads were enormous, so each team was required to pull hard, keeping the chain taut and off the ground. In practice, here, the first wagon runs with its brake applied to somewhat mimic the weight of a loaded set of freight wagons.
