\\ By Matt Malatesta THREE-SPORT STAR LOVES TO COMPETE MERCY HAVE
ROSEHILL CHRISTIAN IS HOME TO ONE OF THE MOST PROLIFIC TAPPS ATHLETES IN THE STATE OF TEXAS. Mercy Freeman was recently named the TAPPS 3A Female Athlete of the Year in May after earning first-team, all state honors in basketball; second-team, all-state honors in volleyball and had a tremendous junior year on the oval for track and field. “We are very competitive as a family,” Freeman laughed. “It’s healthy, though. When we were kids, we would be in the park and my parents would set up an obstacle course for me and my brothers and we would race for hours. It’s always been like that.” The three-sport athlete recognizes a common thread in her athletic prowess. “I thought about this and I’m always jumping,” she said. “In volleyball I’m going for the block or kill; in basketball I’m jumping for rebounds and in track, well you know? Jumping is my thing. I love practicing with my team in volleyball and basketball, but when I’m practicing jumps in track… I’m in my zone. I’m always trying to get better and it never gets old.” She suffered an ankle injury during the track season, which limited her dominance but the Eagles still finished second at the State Meet. The basketball team reached the State Finals and the volleyball team reached the State Semis. Another common thread for Freeman? Winning.
