DEAR PROSPECTIVE ROSEHILL CHRISTIAN SCHOOL FAMILY

At Rosehill Christian School, we sincerely believe that our children deserve to be valued, welcomed and known. RCS offers a Christian, college preparatory education for students from Preschool to 12th-grade, providing opportunities for every child to grow spiritually, intellectually, emotionally and physically. Our mission states the goal of RCS best: Rosehill Christian School provides excellence in Christ centered education as an extension of the Christian home. Every day at RCS, there are opportunities to grow and learn as children blossom into the adults

God designed them to be. With Christ at the center, we partner with parents to prepare children for the challenges of this world, so they fulfill their God-given purpose and reach their potential. If you would like your child to be a part of this exciting journey, we would be delighted to talk with you to see if Rosehill Christian School is the best fit for your children and family. We consider it a privilege to have the opportunity to minister to you and your family at Rosehill Christian School. Sincerely, Lauren Dyal Head of School

DEAR EAGLE FAMILY

Welcome to the Rosehill Christian School-VYPE Media magazine. We are appreciative of VYPE and all they do for high school sports in Texas. This magazine highlights our students in Athletics and Fine Arts and their accomplishments over the past year. It’s a blessing to serve with some amazing administrators, teachers, coaches, students and parents who love the Lord and work together to make Rosehill Christian a very special and family-oriented place. We want to win and excel in athletics but only if done with class, character and humility, while honoring our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The Billy Graham quote, “A coach will impact more people in one

year than the average person will in an entire lifetime” rings so true here at our school. We have incredible coaches who build strong relationships and faith and character into our student athletes each and every day. It’s our prayer that our athletes will excel inside and outside of the athletic arena and in their Christian walk in the years ahead. We appreciate and love our Eagle family and the great support we receive each and every year. Recent Henderson Cup wins as the best 3A school in TAPPS is a testimony of the excellence of all who are a part of our school. Blessings and Go Eagles! Steve Krantz Director of Athletics

THE CLASS 3A TAPPS LANDSCAPE HAS BEEN DOMINATED BY RCS GIRLS BASKETBALL IN RECENT MEMORY, AND THE 2023-24 SEASON WAS NO DIFFERENT. UNDER THE DIRECTION OF COACH STEVE KRANTZ, THE EAGLES WENT 19-4 ON THE SEASON, WHICH INCLUDED AN UNDEFEATED (5-0) DISTRICT TITLE AND AN ENSUING RUN IN THE PLAYOFFS. my favorite artists, it would probably be SZA. I listened to her new album constantly when it was released.” Her favorite memories with her teammates… her extended family? “The team meals after games were so much fun. Especially if we went to McDonald’s,” she laughed. “My go-to is a Quarter Pounder with Cheese. Making a run to State two years in a row was something I will never forget. We became a sisterhood.” For Coach Krantz and the RCS community, it will be a tough good-bye when Montgomery walks out of the gym for the last time. She left a legacy.

Minnesota Lynx star Maya Moore, who she has had the opportunity to watch in person on multiple occasions. Her style of play would earn her all-state honors the past two seasons as her game grew under the direction of Coach Krantz. However, there’s much more to the senior guard than meets the eye. “I’m really into music, which led me to being a musician on the side,” she said. “I used to play the saxophone and the drums a lot. I haven’t really had as much time to play anymore, but I’ll do it for fun every once in a while. “If I had to pinpoint one of

that really made me decide to transfer over here, and I’m glad I did.” Two State Tournament appearances later, Montgomery talked about her career on the hardwood. “I started playing basketball when I was six years old,” Montgomery said. “I ran in cross country and played soccer for a little while, but at the end of the day, this is the path I chose. The whole experience appeals to me – the competition, the aggressiveness and the teammates. That’s what makes this game my go-to.” According to Montgomery, she modeled her game after former UConn and

CHARITY MONTGOMERY MADE AN IMMEDIATE IMPACT UPON HER ARRIVAL AT ROSEHILL CHRISTIAN SCHOOL. Since transferring to RCS two years ago, it’s been a win-win for both Montgomery and the Class 3A TAPPS power. “I was first drawn to Rosehill Christian when my sister had a track meet here,” she said. “Coach (Steve) Krantz’s wife handed us the tickets and she asked me about my interests. When I told her I played basketball, she referred me to her husband, Coach Krantz… the athletic director and girls basketball coach. “I think it was the interest that they both showed in me

DESPITE ONLY BEING A PART OF THE ROSEHILL CHRISTIAN PROGRAM FOR ONE SEASON, GABE VILJOEN LEFT QUITE THE IMPACT ON THE COURT. The senior guard led the Eagles in scoring in 2024, while also being among the team’s leaders in assists and steals. Naturally, as the team captain, Viljoen led RCS to a successful district campaign prior to making an appearance in the TAPPS 3A playoffs. VYPE had the opportunity to catch up with Viljoen as he wrapped up his high school career. VYPE: What got you into basketball and what’s kept you going with it for so long? VILJOEN: I’ve only ever played basketball. What got me interested in the sport was just playing recreationally with some friends. I’ve really enjoyed it, became obsessed with it and there’s nothing else I’d rather do. VYPE: How do define your style of play? VILJOEN: I’m more of a distance shooter. I just catch and shoot – hit a lot of threes. My ball-handling ability is pretty good, so that’s how I like to play. VYPE: Who do you pattern your game after? VILJOEN: JJ Redick out of Duke. He played for several NBA teams over his career,

with my friends. Thankfully, I’ve made a lot of friends at Rosehill, and it’s just great to be around other people. VYPE: What do you hope to see from the team after you graduate? VILJOEN: I just hope they still keep their hopes up, keep competing and play hard every day. That kind of mentality will help them on the court, and outside of basketball as well.

you’ll go insane. VYPE: What do you think has helped set you apart from some other basketball players, or students in general? VILJOEN: I would say it’s been my faith in God. That also feeds into who I am outside of the game. VYPE: What do you do to find that balance or wind down? VILJOEN: I like to hang out

like the Magic, Clippers and 76ers. He was my favorite to watch before he retired. VYPE: What’s your go-to movie or TV show? VILJOEN: My favorite movie is Whiplash. It isn’t always the easiest one to watch, but I love that movie. I related to the main character’s obsession with his craft, but it also displays that you need to have a balance with it in your daily life, otherwise

‘ahead of the game’, but it almost feels that way in terms of strength when baseball season comes around. “As the quarterback for the football team, I’ve assumed the leader role. So, I feel more prepared to help wherever I’m needed. It just comes more naturally in the Spring.” After the Eagles reached the TAPPS postseason a year ago, in which he received all state recognition, Walker will be relied on to assume that leadership position once again. He will be joined by seniors Cade Whitt and Joseph Hext. “We’re really young this year,” he said. “I think that the few older, more experienced guys need to help these younger guys out. The current underclassmen on the team are going to be really good – I can see it. But, we just need to make them feel more comfortable and relaxed in order to bring out their potential.” What the Eagles lack in veteran experience, they make up for in leadership. Trey Walker is an embodiment of that. All that’s left now is to see how that translates onto the diamond.

MOVING TO A NEW SCHOOL CAN BE A DAUNTING TASK FOR ANYONE. FACTOR IN THE TRANSITION FROM PUBLIC TO PRIVATE SCHOOL, AND THE CHANGE IS AMPLIFIED. However, after transferring from Klein Cain three years ago, Trey Walker wasted no time in establishing himself as a competitor within Rosehill Christian. “My time here has honestly been a ride,” he laughed. “That’s the best way I can describe it. I initially came here for football, but the whole experience has been amazing. Coming from a big Class 6A public school to the tight-knit environment here was the best thing for me. “I feel like I’ve made some life-long friends here and have achieved more things than I likely would have ever gotten in public school. Rosehill has made me a better person as a whole.” Just as he mentioned, Walker initially came to RCS for the football program. His arm made him a prime candidate to be the Eagles’ starting quarterback, for which the lefty signal-caller earned all-state honors in 2023. Additionally, that same arm makes him the ace for coach Nathan Utt’s baseball program. “I think football coming before baseball has always helped to keep my arm in shape,” said Walker. “I wouldn’t say I’m always

there, so it’s a great fit for me. Plus, golf is just amazing in Florida, so I’m really looking forward to continuing my playing career there.” One of the most premier golfers in Texas ultimately decided she wanted to go to the state with the most golf courses (1,250) in the entire nation. Shocker. Jenkins will certainly be in the right landscape to eventually pursue her dream of reaching the LPGA Tour. However, she still has one more showing to make before traveling to the Sunshine State. “I try not to set too many expectations for myself, because with golf, you never really know whether things will go your way or not,” she said. “I’m looking forward to this season and I’m hoping it goes the same way it has been each year before. Finishing high school with four titles in a row would be fantastic.” Jenkins is surprisingly modest for an athlete of her caliber. But then again, that’s likely a result of the virtuous environment she’s grown up in. Whether she’s on the golf course this Spring, traveling with family and friends, or engaging in her other passion of baking, it’s becoming increasingly clear that Jaycee Jenkins is one of a kind.

WHEN IT COMES TO TEXAS PRIVATE SCHOOL GOLF, FEW CAN ARGUE THAT ROSEHILL CHRISTIAN ISN’T ONE OF THE MOST DOMINANT TEAMS SEEN ON THE COURSE IN RECENT MEMORY. Therefore, it stands to reason that RCS is home to an elite-level golfer. Enter Jaycee Jenkins. Not only did she help guide the Eagles to their third-straight TAPPS 3A Championship in 2023, Jenkins won the State Tourney with a two-day score of 135 – 12 strokes ahead of the second-place finisher. So, where did it all begin for Jenkins? “I’d say it was my grandfather who got me into it,” she said. “He was my coach for a while and encouraged me to compete from a young age. My mother (Kristen Jenkins), who’s my current coach, has been a big influence. From then on, golf has always been a part of my life, so I’ve been used to it.” That’s unlikely to change anytime soon, since the Rosehill Christian senior will be heading east next semester. She’ll attend Palm Beach Atlantic University on a golf scholarship. “I love the weather there,” Jenkins laughed. “I hate the cold and it’s always super sunny

DESPITE THEIR RELATIVELY SMALL CLASS-SIZES, IT’S NO SECRET WHO ROSEHILL CHRISTIAN’S “IT-GIRL” IS. Whether she’s lighting up the scoreboard on the basketball court or re-writing the record books on the track, Mercy Freeman has helped to establish RCS as a brand on the TAPPS-3A scene. Considering all the success she has seen, it might come as a shock that Freeman nearly never joined track and field. “In fifth and sixth grade, I actually didn’t have that much of an interest in joining the track team,” she said. “I had just finished with basketball each of those years, so my thought process was, ‘I’m tired of running’. But, Kaleigh (Frazier) kept encouraging me to join, so seventh grade is when I ultimately decided to give it a shot. “Since Kaleigh did hurdles, I figured I could try some events other than sprints as well. Eventually, I fell in love with jumping and the sport itself, and the work that’s needed to consistently improve yourself.” It’s a good thing she was ultimately swayed to join, since she’s been the definitive catalyst towards Rosehill Christian’s two state titles over the past three seasons. But, that’s not the only reason the senior has to appreciate the time she’s

walk, run and jump – which is crazy to think about the little things we do on a daily basis. “The biggest thing for me was getting my strength back and having to work extra hard in order to catch up. Because we were supposed to win last year, I think that we’re all more determined than ever to get back to our State Title form.” They may have their game-face on now, but it should be a safe assessment that Freeman and company will be all smiles in the coming months.

the Eagles would have handily won the TAPPS-3A State Championship for the third-consecutive time in 2023, had it not been for Freeman suffering a high ankle sprain in the opening event. Rest assured, Freeman has been doing her utmost to ensure that Rosehill Christian can flip the script in 2024. “It was definitely hard to come back from that, especially since I wasn’t able to walk initially,” she said. “I had to start from square one – re-learning how to

put in.

“Having played most sports at Rosehill Christian, I feel like track would be my favorite ‘team vibe’ for lack of a better word,” said Freeman. “Everyone is always super close, and after our meets we all go out to eat – whether it be at Canes, Chick-fil-a or Whataburger. At the end of the day, I feel that we’re more of a family, rather than a team.” According to head coach David Saye, Freeman contributes 45 points to the family, on average. Given that insane statistic,

but due to unfortunate events like the injury Mercy (Freeman) suffered, we fell just short. We’re definitely focusing on winning again, and making sure people know that we’re still the team to beat. “Personally, I was hurt all of last season up until the district meet. So, it’s a comeback-year for me as well. for me, since the Winter temperatures are in the single-digits, but we luckily have an indoor track to train in. I’ll be okay.” However, before she becomes a Jayhawk, Frazier still has some unfinished business. After the Eagles placed second in last year’s State Meet – by the narrow margin of two points – she intends to help guide Rosehill Christian to gold in the homestretch of her high school career. “I think this is a ‘comeback-year’ for us,” Frazier said. “We were predicted to win last season,

knows each other and you feel a supportive presence. That comforts me and helps to keep me going.” It would seem that community-aspect has paid dividends for the senior Eagle and now it’s time for her to fly. She will be taking her talents to the collegiate level on a track scholarship with the University of Kansas. “I loved everything about Kansas,” she said. “When I went on my official visit, it just felt like home. I knew I was making the right decision when I committed in November. It’s definitely going to be an adjustment

WHEN VIEWING THE ALL-TIME LEADERBOARDS OF ROSEHILL CHRISTIAN TRACK AND FIELD, THERE IS ONE NAME THAT TENDS TO BE THE RECORD-HOLDER – KALEIGH FRAZIER. The dual-threat sprinter/ hurdler has already cemented her status as one the most premier athletes to walk the halls of the Tomball private school. Lo and behold, Frazier’s background indicates that she was almost predestined to do so. “Track has always been a really big thing in my family,” she said. “My brother and father both competed in track and field, and so did my aunt. So, it essentially runs in the family. I wasn’t exactly forced into it, but I just naturally joined in the fifth grade and went with it from there.” Not only has Frazier taken part in the “family business” since elementary school through her formative years, but so has her younger sister Kaydence. She will be the next to take the baton for the Fraziers. She’s also been a member of the Rosehill Christian family since she was three years old. “I’ve gone here my whole life, so I don’t really know anything different,” said Frazier. “Being here, surrounded by people who are close to you, it makes a big impact.
