OUR IDENTITY OF A “REDEMPTION” MINDSET WAS CONCEIVED THE MINUTE WE LOST THE TOMPKINS PLAYOFF MATCH IN THE PLAYOFFS LAST SEASON. THAT RESULT AND THE MENTALITY THAT STEMS FROM THAT WILL BE A MAJOR DRIVER FOR US THIS YEAR. HOWEVER, THERE’S ALWAYS UPS AND DOWNS AS WE MOVE THROUGHOUT A SEASON. WE’RE GOING TO HAVE TO ADJUST AND MODIFY AS WE GO. THE BIG PICTURE, IS TO RETURN TO STATE AND THE “REDEMPTION” MINDSET WILL BE WHAT GETS US THERE. RPVB HEAD COACH LAURYN BAILEY

the present, inspiring the future.” “It’s an amazing, annual opportunity to show what Ridge Point volleyball players have done and what they continue to do,” said HOF co-director Wade Smith, dad of current Panther junior and Rice University Commit Aaliyah Smith and her older sister Arissa (Current Freshman Mississippi State University Volley Dawg), who graduated in 2023. “The amount of (RP grads) who have gone on to play volleyball at the next level is unprecedented. It’s unmatched. And after their volleyball careers end, they

The idea of the RPVHOF, conceived in 2022 and officially born during the inaugural inductees’ celebration May 20, honors the best of the best among the young women who have performed spectacularly wearing Panthers’ purple – but it’s much more than that. Ridge Point’s present and past volleyball parents, dedicated volunteers and media supporters were determined to turn it into a greater blessing. The underlying foundation of Ridge Point HS volleyball’s “Phenomenal Panthers Hall of Fame” is this theme: “Honoring the past, supporting

fame? It would be the finest bedroom or suite in a fine, well-appointed home. It would definitely be on the top floor, and not everyone would be worthy of staying there, due to the requisite high standards of excellence. Some professional sports halls of fame require exemplary character and community contributions in addition to great performance, and some HOFs don’t consider those things. The new Ridge Point Volleyball Hall of Fame considers both in the meticulous process of inducting a small, select group of Panther alumna each year.

WHEN HALLS OF FAME ARE DISCUSSED, WHATEVER PURSUIT THEY ARE ESTABLISHED TO HONOR, YOU’RE LIKELY TO HEAR TWO THINGS: ONE OR MORE FORMS OF THE VERB “IMMORTALIZE;” AND A VERY SERIOUS TONE AMONG THE PEOPLE WHO DECIDE WHO’S WORTHY OF GETTING IN. Passionate and even contentious debate often ensues, because the induction of hall of famers isn’t to be taken lightly. Numerous college coaches and athletic directors metaphorically refer to their programs as the “front porch” of the institution. So, what’s the metaphor for a hall of

go one to amazing things in various professions. We have young women who have gone one to have successful careers on the court, but also a community impact in health care, law, media, coaching, civic services, teaching, first responders so on and so forth. Connecting those amazing former Panthers, with current Panthers in the name of Charity and giving back to the community just made the idea come full circle. It should be lauded, and that’s why we’re doing it.” Smith and co-director Rosemary Cook, whose daughter Carrington is a senior (Radford University Commit) on the current team, are busy professionals and parents but that didn’t deter them from making time to make this event come to life. “The amount of calls and conversations, I can’t (enumerate),” Cook said. We talked to so many partners, so many vendors, because we had to have jackets, rings, linens, china, flatware, speakers; there was so much advice and in-kind support from the community. That’s how this charter became as successful as it was.”

The weekend began with The Reading With The Panthers Literacy event. Current and former Panther Volleyball players visited Heritage Rose Elementary School, interacting with every single student to promote literacy on Friday, the 19th; they gave out over 4,000 age appropriate books in combination with a program wide book drive and in partnership with Books Between Kids, which the athletes picked up and transported to HRE themselves; read books to the children; and gave out bookmarks provided by Raising Cane’s – which doubled as a reading incentive. Students who read a required number of books can redeem it for a free Cane’s meal. Panther players later suited up and competed in the “Stars vs. Legends” charity match that evening; and taught aspiring young volleyball players during the Panthers Youth Volleyball Camp at the Ridge Point gym the next day from 9AM-1PM. Then, it was time to get gussied up for the main event that evening. “The idea started when

approval from Fort Bend ISD athletic director Dena Scott. In less than 48 hours, the ball was already rolling at a high rate of speed. Cook’s undeniable powers of persuasion led to generous underwriting sponsorships led by WalMart, C&K Business Consulting, the Houston Texans, and Books Between Kids, plus dozens of other companies and individuals. With their win in the Friday match, the Stars’ designated charity (GiGi’s Playhouse, where a half-dozen Panther volleyball players volunteer regularly) received $3,000; the losing Legends team garnered $1,500 for the Shelter for Cancer Families. About the new hall of famers: Caitlyn Cooper (class of 2015), Skylar Fields (2019) and Reagan Rutherford (2020) emerged as the three inductees after multiple prolonged debates among the voting Hall of Fame committee: Taylor Bannister, Tara Cross Battle (whose daughter Lauren will be a Senior and will be playing her 3rd varsity season in 2023), Cook, Fort Bend ISD assistant athletic director

Rosemary came up to me during a tournament game in August of ‘22, talking about getting more jerseys or something like that,” Smith said. “As we talked, we shared ideas about benefitting current and future Panthers, some stuff that had been on my mind for a year or so. These ideas needed to right kind of people to execute it, and Rosemary’s that kind of person. I mentioned to her the idea of getting a hall of fame. She got excited about it, really quickly. “Later, at the same tournament, Rosemary told me she already had arranged the dates and events with Coach (Lauryn) Bailey. It hatched just from me mentioning it to her.” “(Ridge Point campus athletic co-ordinator overseeing fundraisers) Rick LaFavers approved the fundraiser on that Thursday in August 2022 when Wade and I first started talking about it,” Cook said. “By the time we saw each other at the tournament Saturday, we had all the approvals and paperwork we needed for this fundraiser.” That included an in-writing

Deb Mize, VYPEFortBend. com broadcaster Roger Smith, Wade Smith, and Ridge Point girls athletic co-ordinator Evelyn Torres. All three inductees were present for the HOF celebration inside the Ridge Point HS commons, and joining them in stepping to the mic during the program were KPRC-TV Channel 2’s Randy McIlvoy, Ridge Point Head Coach Lauryn Bailey, and the keynote speaker: Fran Flory. Flory is the winningest coach in the history of LSU volleyball, with 405 career match wins in 31 combined years of coaching (at LSU, Kentucky, Southeastern Louisiana and Wittenberg), and is herself an inductee to the American Volleyball Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Other Panther players nominated and considered for induction were (in alphabetical order): Nina Clair Jeter, Sydni Leonard, Keandra “Keke” McCardell, Nia McCardell, Britney Ong, Brooke Rutherford, Kenedi Rutherford, Vallen Vaughn and Haley Wilcox. varsity more than merely hungry to bring home the big prize. They’re ravenous. “I really have just one word that encompasses the goal that we’re trying to reach,” said Bailey. “And that word is redemption. It’s going to be our ‘hashtag’ for the upcoming season. It’s redemption for every playoff match we’ve lost, every heartbreaking loss we’ve had. “Typically, I let the seniors on the team choose the (upcoming year’s) hashtag. But this year, I’ve chosen ‘redemption.’ It’s been our motto all spring, ever since the Tompkins loss (Nov. 8). And knowing that we lost that (match), and we would’ve had a great chance of making the state run, (the objective is) redemption. As long as we have girls with a mind to make it to state, and to win there, it will always be the end goal.” FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THE PROGRAM SCAN THE CODE

the Panthers reached the UIL Class 6A finals at the Curtis Culwell Center in Garland, losing in four games to Flower Mound. In 2019 and 2021 with Bailey as head coach, Ridge Point earned trips to Garland again as champions of Region III-6A, but each time lost agonizing 5-set state semifinal matches. competition is sure to be just as stiff and the evaluations just as laborious to see who makes up the 2nd class of inductees. 2023 SEASON Preview COACH’S CORNER – INTERVIEW ARTICLE 7/23/23

going to have to come in and compete every day. I’m truly going to have to decide, based on, “You only get to play if you’re practicing the way that you should be.” So this year, more than ever, our girls will have to compete for their spot; and the playing time will be granted or not, based on how you’re practicing. If that competition scares a player away, she’s probably not gonna see the court very much. But, for those that rise to the challenge and want to come in and compete every day the way that I know they can, they’re going to make my job really difficult this year (deciding who is on the varsity roster). SEASON PREVIEW Lauren Battle (S/RS/OH) Sr : Veteran leader and captain of our team. She has played almost every position on the court at a really high level since her Freshman year. Talented, selfless and a great teammate. Taylor Jory (S) Sr : Purple heart recipient

year in and year out because that’s exactly who she is; gives 100% of her heart to her teammates 100% of the time. Carrington Cook (RS/OH) Sr : Fierce competitor and another one of our captains that has all of the shots and can play multiple positions. Cameron Coleman (MB) Sr : Everyone loves Cameron, respects Cameron, listens to Cameron, because that’s who she is to everyone else. Kennedi Rogers (OH) Junior : great kid, great student, great talent, and continues to do amazing things! Aaliyah Smith (OH/RS) Junior : Great player. Great teammate. Great student. Great kid. She’s just great and we’re so grateful Taylor Johnson (MB) Soph : Our very own energizer bunny! When she has the energy, it is unmatched and very contagious! She has grown so much personally and athletically and we’re very proud of her!

the power. Aaliyah Smith has the length. Carrington Cook has the shots. Lauren Battle has, you know, a little bit of everything, and the list goes on and on, so I can’t really point out one person. Q: This season, when maybe you have several players who are on the bubble for making the on the varsity roster, how would you describe the culture of competition during your practices? Will it be more intense than ever? A: Yes, because our senior class alone is so

HEAD COACH LAURYN BAILEY ANSWERS ROGER SMITH’S QUESTIONS ABOUT RIDGE POINT’S UPCOMING VOLLEYBALL SEASON. Q: Coach Bailey, what are the Panthers’ best assets for the 2023 season as you see them before starting the official UIL workouts? A: I think one of our biggest assets is experience. We have a lot of girls who are returning, and we have girls that are just experienced in big-time situations. I think that experience is going to help us go a long way this year. Q: Is there someone who really stands out as, let’s say, your best player when it comes to getting kills to go down; or your best at defense; or your best server? Or is it just a solid, multi-skilled lineup? A: Yeah, I can’t really name one person who’s best at specific skills, because we have a lot of those. So, you know, Kennedi Rogers has

big. I currently have nine seniors who are planning on trying out and make the team. We usually only carry 15 (varsity players, regardless of classification), but with nine seniors – and pretty much all of them are trying to play at the next level – they’re

FRESH Faces MEET OUR NEWEST VARSITY PLAYERS

Q: Earlier, you mentioned several players who are known quantities. Is there another particular player, or more than one, that you really expect to burst onto the varsity scene and do things at a high level that she hasn’t done on a volleyball court to this point?

A: I’m really interested to see what our (varsity) newcomers are going to do. The girls I named earlier already know what they can do, and I know what they bring to the table. I’m very excited for them to do that, because it’s their time, their junior or senior year. It’s time for them to step up and show out, but I’m also really interested to see what our what some more of our underclassmen will do, and what some of our seniors that I haven’t mentioned (who haven’t been on the varsity roster before), how they will perform. They’ve been working really hard to prove themselves and show what they can offer. I’m excited to see what kind of everybody can do, not just us a single person, really. ~ Lauryn Bailey

Making the Varsity Roster on the Ridge Point Panther Volleyball team is no simple feat in itself. What these Fresh Faces bring to the varsity team this season are just the right mix of ingredients to deliver REDEMPTION for the program. Jayden Robinson (OH/RS) Soph : Brings the IT factor when she steps on the Emory Harper (MB) Junior : Quiet player but when

she talks, you listen because what she has to say is either funny, encouraging, or positive! She will continue to blossom as time goes by! Phoebe Hobbs (S) Sr : Has a smile that will light up a room and has really stepped into her role this season as a setter; she works extremely hard and wants to do her best for her team.

court; she brings a competitiveness and consistency with her game.

Nadia Toussaint (S) Sr : The most caring person you will ever meet; truly wants the best for everyone and encourages other people’s success.

Madison Flores (L) Junior : Her volleyball IQ has grown tremendously this year and she has completely dominated the back row and has become a leader for us! Addison Menefee (RS) Junior : Takes every single opportunity to improve and help her team be successful, no matter what that may look like or how she does it!

Tamia Davis (RS/MB) Sr : The girl who can jump out of the gym! Tamia works extremely hard and makes our hitters work harder when they go up against her on the block! Strong and resilient are the words that come to mind when I think of Tamia.

Sariah Johnson (OH/RS/DS) Sr : Works incredibly hard at practice and makes us better by challenging us offensively and defensively.

Marai Guinyard (DS/L) Sr : Marai came into a brand new school her senior year not knowing anyone and has done it with grace and humility. She is a positive soul and we are lucky to have had her for her senior year.

voted captain back to back years. Jazmin Clark the ultimate competitor and tough leader. Her only goal in life is to WIN. Willing to do whatever it takes to be successful no matter what and she demands the same energy from her teammates. Always asking questions and working to improve whether it be in the middle or on the pin. She will play whatever position, no questions asked, because she just wants to play. Her love for the game is contagious and she’s an honor to coach.

her impossible to read or pick up. She has stepped into a leadership role this year after being voted our 3rd captain. Ziya Sista - It’s no secret that Ziya can absolutely smash a ball. She transitions off the net quick and is always up and ready to attack, that’s what makes her such a force and nearly unstoppable. Madelyn Johnson is such a smart setter and leader with amazing hands that’s allows her to run our fast tempo aggressive offense. She isn’t afraid to lead her teammates on the court and they really do look to her to run the entire offense. She has been

WHAT FRESHMEN COACH RAESBECK SAYS ABOUT THE TEAM These girls have a great balance of having fun and working hard. Undoubtedly, these they love to play volleyball, strive to improve their skills daily, and are ready to compete every week. They are willing to get out of their comfort zone to improve and it shows. I am very proud of them FRESHMEN STANDOUT PLAYERS ON THE TEAM Brianna Ong has been a key player on the back row. Her hustle and communication on the floor have made a huge impact on our team. There is no doubt her consistent passing has set our offense up for success. Lauryn Davis has taken a key role in our defense. Her blocks can be a real momentum killer for the other teams. You can always count on her to protect the net and make it difficult for the hitters on the other

side. Carlie Rogers is an eager middle-hitter who is ready to hit the ball every chance she can. Her kills are getting stronger and I’ve witnessed Kendell Merkel and Grace Abraham have been a solid setting duo. Both do a great job of hustling on the floor and communicating with the hitters. Additionally, they have both been dependable and consistent on the court. Camryn O’Banner has been a solid player all season. She seems to be at the right place at the right time and continues to execute when it counts the most. She is a playmaker and is intentional with her touches on the ball. JV STAND OUT PLAYERS Katelyn Le - is truly one of a kind. She is one of our most consistent pin hitters that is able to see the set and the defense on the other side of the net so well that it makes so much improvement throughout the season.

she showed up to tryouts with a major vertical and fast arm swing, I knew she was going to find her way into the starting lineup, and that’s exactly what she has done. She comes into practice every day locked in and hungry to continue to improve. It’s been great to see how far she has come, but I am really looking forward to watching her grow in the future. WHAT JV COACH KHAN ENJOYS ABOUT THIS TEAM This team really is something special. I have been able to coach most of them as Freshman and now as Sophomores. It has been an absolute joy watching them grow in this sport and into little adults. Their personalities are all so different but the way they fit together so perfectly to form this great bond is only going to make them that much better for their senior year. I love getting to hang with them every day and keep up with their lives. They mean so much to me truly. The most enjoyable aspect of working

COLLEGIATE Panthers

The Ridge Point High School Volleyball Program has shown competitive excellence, at an extraordinary level, during relatively short but impactful existence. According usavolleyball.org, 1.2% of all High School Volleyball players go on to play D1 volleyball at a college or university. The RPVB program sends players to D1 schools at an astounding 10 Times that rate. 13% of all RPVB Grads go on to play D1 College Volleyball, not to mention our alumnae that are thriving at D2, D3, and NAIA collegiate levels (17%). This sustained success is a result of steadfast investment in the program by the players, coaches, parents, teachers, administrators, and community members.
