Refuge staff actively manage wetlands and uplands for birds and wildlife. Farming, filling and draining shallow marshes for birds, and using pre scribed fire to help maintain habitats are productive management tools. The Refuge is open from dawn to dusk 365 days a year and admission is free. The Visitor Center is open Monday through Friday 7:30 a.m.- 4 p.m..On weekends, Volunteers staff the Center on Saturday 9-4 and Sunday 1-5, closed on major Federal Holidays. To reach the Refuge from Pottsboro, travel south on Highway 289 to Refuge Road, turn right (west), and go about four miles. The Refuge Visitor Center will be on your right. Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge is one of more than 566 National Wildlife Refuges throughout the United States managed by the Department of the Interior U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. With more than 150 million acres in the National Wildlife Refuge System, you will find refuges to explore in every state!
