A MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR T here are a lot of reasons to visit Pottsboro. A small town next to a big lake. A small town with a big heart. And a small town with a big future. Situated next to Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge, close to Grayson College and the exceptional Texoma Medical Healthcare System - This town has something for everyone.

Recognized by the State of Texas as a Certified Retirement Community, Pottsboro is a wonderful place to visit and possibly live. In fact, our city motto is... “Come Play, Come Stay.” With a nationally recognized school, as well as a nationally recognized library, the folks in Pottsboro are justifiably proud of what we are. From historical connections to early cattle drives, to the future potential of a regional airport with room to grow, Pottsboro has it all. Many of our residents came here to visit and decided to stay. We hope that you’ll be next to come visit and see all that Pottsboro has to offer.

OUR RICH HISTORY

ESTABLISHED 1876 INCORPORATED 1880

1923-24 Pottsboro sustained serious damage from major fires but he citizens rebuilt and the town prospered.

1940’s The United States government constructed Perrin Army Air Field and Lake Texoma which brought additional economic benefits to the town.

1964 U.S. Air Defense Command’s only F-102 training base was established at Perrin Field and held the world’s largest fleet of F-102 jets. The Air Defense Commands Life Support School was opened on Lake Texoma and among the thousands of airmen trained there, 49 were America’s first astronauts.

1971 Perrin Air Force Base became Grayson County Airport.

1975 Students from the area’s beautiful and historic Austin College (est. 1876) excavated a huge prehistoric mammoth near Flowing Wells on Lake Texoma, and were able to recover 50% of the giant skeleton.

2004 The City of Pottsboro and the Pottsboro Area Chamber of Commerce worked together to establish Pottsboro’s first official Tourist Information Office.

2007 The City of Pottsboro, the Pottsboro Area Chamber aof Commerce and the Pottsboro Community Development Corporation worked together to develop a new city tag line and logo. The new logo and tag line now appear on stationery, signs, flags and various marketing and promotional materials.

2009 The long awaited completion of the extension of SH 289 occurred when, in December, traffic was first allowed to use the new roadway between Southmayd and Pottsboro. Citizens of Dallas now have a direct travel route to the City of Pottsboro and Lake Texoma.

2012 The James G. Thompson Municipal Park, a 28 acre multi-use outdoor recreational facility, was opened to the public.

POTTSBORO A CERTIFIED RETIREMENT COMMUNITY M ost aging adults prefer to age in place. About 76% of adults over 50 want to remain in their current home, with 70% preferring to live in their present community for as long as they can, according to a national survey of adults 18+ by AARP. Because of the wide range of assets, abilities, and needs encompassed by the older adult population, a variety of programs and activities are available to residents. The vital role of older adults in Pottsboro is evidenced by their contributions as volunteers throughout the community. The Pottsboro Library offers events, classes, information, and resources to help older adults thrive. We support the many older adults who have the time and emotional space to engage in lifelong learning, creative endeavors, and community connections. At the same time, we recognize and address the real challenges people face as they age, including social isolation, financial insecurity, digital inclusion, and declining health. The older adults we serve are as diverse as the population of Pottsboro itself. We welcome and support all older adults, in all of their circumstances and identities, in all of their hopes and dreams for the best quality of life possible. At the Pottsboro Library, we embrace aging and provide the information and programs you need to have a wonderful older adulthood. And, if you face difficulties as you age, we are here to assist you with resources to meet those challenges. We also recognize and honor the impact of one’s background and identity on the experience of aging.

“Lainie was wonderful. From our initial interview to closing, she responded to emails and text messages usually within a few minutes. Through Lainie’s market knowledge, she set our price and predicted the bidding that happened. Sold in 2 days, 10% above our asking price. Closed in 30 days or so. I will use Lainie again.” - Mark W, Oklahoma City

“My experience with Homes by Lainie was a pleasure from start to finish. The entire staff is knowledgeable and professional and kept me abreast of every step as we moved through the process. They got a contract in the first few days after listing and we closed last week. I highly recommend this group for all your real estate needs.” - Sandra H., Pottsboro

POTTSBORO EMERGENCY SERVICES POTTSBORO POLICE

T he Pottsboro Police Department is responsible for protecting and serving more than 3,000 residents and patrols more than 3 square miles of city streets, neighborhood’s and highways each day. “It’s a great community as well as a safe community”, says Pottsboro Police Chief Shone Nix. “The crime rate is low in our area and I don’t be lieve that’s a coincidence. I think this is due to the good enforcement work we do here.” The department employees 9 full-time officers and 1 code enforcement officer. “The longevity of our officers, through time and service, is good”, says Nix. “We rarely have anyone leave. We have 1 officer that’s been with us for more than a decade and several others that are 5+ years.” With a tight-knit department, Nix says Pottsboro officers rely heavily upon one another for support, while we also have the unique opportunity to see all cases through. “With the size of our department, any cases we catch out here, we work it from beginning to end”, says Nix. “We conduct the investigations on it all the way until it’s filed with the District Attorney’s office for prosecution.” Nix says the officers often assists deputies of the Grayson County Sheriff’s office with calls near Lake Texoma and handles hundreds of calls each year in it’s own jurisdiction. “We wear many different hats out here”, says Nix. “Sometimes we encounter people when we are enforcing traffic or crimi nal laws and they aren’t always happy about that. But when we have the other calls that allow us to respond, assist and do whatever we can to help people, and that’s rewarding”.

The Pottsboro Police Department is located at 411 Franklin Avenue and can be reached for non-emergency assistance by calling 903-786-5202

In 2021, the department added another officer to the staff, but this officer is the furry kind. Chief Nix was able to se cure a grant along with some generous donations from local business owners to launch a K9 program. Ursa has al ready been a great asset to our agency by locating drugs, patrolling the school campuses and interacting with citizens in our community. Since joining us, Ursa has also been deployed multiple times with some federal agencies and regional criminal interdiction units, resulting in the location and seizure of narcotics.

T he City of Pottsboro Volunteer Fire Department is responsible for emergency services covering a 43-square mile area which include the city limits of Pottsboro. The department responds to roughly 300 calls each year. The fire department handles fires, medical emergencies, vehicle accidents, mutual aid calls to neighboring districts and any other situations where the fire department might be needed. The Department was founded in 1946 as a ‘Bucket Brigade’ Fire Department. The first piece of motorized apparatus was obtained in the early 50’s. The Fire Department consists of 10 volunteer firefighters, administered by its paid Fire Chief Brenden McCloud. Several of our volunteers are certified firefighters with the Texas Commission of Fire Protection and Texas State Firemen and Fire Marshal Association. Our department is a registered first responder and several of our volunteers are also certified with the Texas Department of State Health. Maintaining certifications and ensuring our department is trained and ready to go requires monthly training sessions. The volunteers take pride knowing they get to serve the City of Pottsboro. They all have other jobs and careers but when the pager goes off, they drop what they are doing to respond to the emergency at hand. The City of Pottsboro is very thankful that there are volunteers that are willing to help their neighbor in need and volunteer their time at the fire department. The fire department regularly works with and trains with other area fire departments to include North Texas Regional Airport FD, Preston FD/EMS, Locust FD and Denison FD. POTTSBORO FIRE & RESCUE

Our equipment includes two engines that can pump 1500 gallon per minute and hold 1500 gallons in their water tank. We also have two brush trucks for fighting wild land (grass) fires. The engines and brush trucks are supported with one command vehicle. The City of Pottsboro Fire Department station is located at 401 Franklin Ave (in town). The phone number is 903-786-2495, please leave a message as staff / volunteers are not always at the station. The Pottsboro Fire Chief Brenden McCloud can be reached by cell phone 430-666-5255

PRESTON EMERGENCY SERVICES F ounded in 1969, Preston Volunteer Emergency Services, Inc. (PVES) is a nonprofit organization providing emergency medical care as Preston EMS and responding to fires and accidents as Preston Fire Rescue. Not only do we provide life-saving treatment and transportation, and fire protection services, our greatest role in the community is to be compassionate listeners and helpers. PRESTON EMS Preston EMS, established in 1985, is staffed by Chief Brian Little, 6 full-time employees and 15 part-time employees. The agency operates two ambulanc es over roughly 60 square miles and responds to 700 calls per year within the Preston Peninsula, Pottsboro, and Locust communities.

EMS staff begin each day with station, vehicle and equipment checks, and stay busy throughout the day responding to calls, performing research, and continuing education studies to maintain certifications and licenses. The EMS station is staffed 24/7, with one EMT and one paramedic each day. The EMT performs basic life support techniques while the paramedic provides advanced life support measures. Preston EMS is located at 3763 FM 406 in Pottsboro and can be reached for non-emergency matters by calling 903-786-2604 or by email to prestonemschief@gmail.com. PRESTON FIRE RESCUE Preston Fire Rescue is comprised of 12 volunteers and is also led by Chief Brian Little. The agency responds to 400 fire and emergency medical calls each year and mobilizes two engines, one tanker, one brush truck, and one rescue squad vehicle. Most of volunteers are working individuals. They have families and full lives, in addition to being firefighters. We are

fortunate for their service and commitment to the community.

Preston firefighters undergo 1-2 monthly training sessions and may attend the Texas A&M University’s renowned annual firefighter training

camp, where they learn new techniques and tackle specific firefighting scenarios.

Preston Fire Rescue operates out of two stations, located at 85584 N. State Hwy 289, and at 68 Cambridge Shores Drive, in Pottsboro. The agency can be reached for non-emergency matters by calling 903-786-3010 or by email to prestonfirechief@gmail.com.

LOCUST FIRE DEPARTMENT T he Locust Community Volunteer Fire Department was founded in 1971 as a nonprofit, public safety organization and is responsible for covering 15 square miles.

The agency is led by Chief Timothy Thomas and is staffed by a team of 12 volunteer firefighters. “We’ve got people here willing to put their personal lives to the side and run and help somebody else when they’re in need,” says Thomas. The group responds to 100-200 calls per year, consisting of fires, medical calls, vehicle crashes and other emergencies. Firefighters use a lineup of five vehicles to tend to calls, including an engine, a 3,000-gallon water tender and two brush trucks. “For any major fire, we always have all four area departments — Locust, Pottsboro Preston and NTRA — come in,” says Thomas. “Between the four of us, we can get a real strong group of folks to turn out.” The Locust Volunteer Fire Department is located at 116 Spincaster Lane in Pottsboro and can be reached by email at locustvfd@gmail.com We would always love to have our community involved in what we’re doing, to know what kind of services we provide them and to understand how they can help support us.”

LOCAL AREA HOUSES OF WORSHIP

T here are six churches that cooperate together in Pottsboro. The Pottsboro Ministerial Alliance is made up of Preston Community Church, Lakeway Methodist Church, Georgetown Baptist Church, First Baptist Church, St. John’s Episcopal Church and Hagerman Baptist Church. These churches work throughout the year serving the community in a multitude of ways. In the Spring the Pottsboro Ministerial Alliance has an event called “We Gather Together”. On that day, all the churches invade local grocery stores and fill several trailers with non-perishable food items to help stock the shelves of the Resale Barn and The churches of the Pottsboro Ministerial Alliance support our local school district by providing scholarships to graduating seniors each year. The generous members of our churches also donated close to $4000 last year to buy school supplies for our teachers’ supply closets at the elementary, middle school and high school. Whatever the need, the churches of the Pottsboro Ministerial Alliance help by showing the love of Christ. The pastors of our local churches meet monthly to pray for and support one another. The Pottsboro Ministerial Alliance creates opportunities for the different churches to worship together because when churches cooperate it makes the community stronger! These are just a few of the things the Pottsboro Ministerial Alliance does to help make Pottsboro a great place to live and visit. Whether you live here or are just visiting, come worship with one of our churches and make the spiritual connection that is such a vital part of life! Visions of Sugarplums. G olf came to Texas early in the last century. Houston had a course in 1906 and the Houston Country Clformed in 1908, while the Dallas Country Club had a course in 1912. Sherman’s Woodlawn Country Club opened a course in 1916, and in Denison, the Rod and Gun Club added a nine hole course to their property in 1922. These first nine became the back nine when the course expanded to 18-holes in 1978. TANGLEWOOD The Tanglewood Resort in Pottsboro features a 7,000-yard course, with fairways of Bermuda grass and greens of Diamond Zoysia. Tanglewood was the first facility in the country to install this eco-friendly Zoysia grass hybrid. Created by a team at Texas A&M University, the grass thrives in the dry heat of Texas summers and provides golfers a great putting surface year-round. The Tanglewood course is open for membership and daily fee players. It also features the 19th Hole Grill and Bar. STONE CREEK Stone Creek Golf Club arrived in Grayson County in 2007. The 7,428-yard, 18-hole course was designed by Cal Olson. “We like to think of Stone Creek as the Cadillac of golf courses in Grayson County,” said General Manager Aaron Reynolds. “It’s a daily fee course that offers memberships as well, so it’s just a matter of how much someone wants to play and what matches their goals.”
