Peninsula In Passage
In “Whisperings and Other Poems,” poet Elkanah East Taylor wrote in 1919 To Hinton A. Darden – A Hero A gallant brave in heart and mind, The day he went across, He did not count his loved ones, then, Nor let his loved land lost. With courage that was high and strong He faced the foe to fight; He threw his manhood to the side That battled for the right. He drew his sword for royal truth; He championed honor’s cause;
He followed overseas the flag that bears the stripes and stars. He thought he would come back; But yet, he said, with his last breath, “I helped save others, yet to come, From something worse than death.” He is not dead. He lives today – His spirit grandly lives; And to a thousand other souls An inspiration gives. No slacker he – a noble boy, His soul to us a beam, And through the ages long shall shine With other lights that gleam.
